The Pentax K-x Digital SLR (Red) kit includes the Pentax K-x body with the Pentax DA L 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 and DA L 55-300mm zoom lenses. With these 2 lenses you can shoot everything from groups in tight spaces with the 18mm wide angle as well as sports and animals in nature with the long 300mm telephoto. The camera incorporates advanced DSLR features - including Live View and HD 720p video - in a very capable entry-level camera for those looking to step beyond the limitations of point-and-shoot digicams. The compact Pentax K-x makes the transition to a 'serious' camera system with interchangeable lenses easy and painless.
The Pentax K-x contains a 12.4 megapixel APS-C format CMOS sensor that incorporates a sensor-shift Shake Reduction System that allows you to hand-hold the camera at shutter speeds up to 4-stops slower than normal under low-light situations and still maintain image sharpness. Aside from the K-x's bright optical finder, you can also compose images in Live View mode using the camera's 2.7" LCD.
Despite the K-x's entry-level price point, still images can be captured at a fast 4.7 frames-per-second at shutter speeds up to 1/6000th-second as JPEGs or RAW files. Along with conventional still imaging, you can also capture wide-screen, full resolution 720p (1280 x 720) HD video at 24fps using the full range of Pentax optics. For travel or everyday family events, the Pentax K-x makes for an ideal imaging companion.
Other advanced features found on the Pentax K-x include an 11-point, wide-angle SAFOX VIII autofocus system, a variety of automatic and manual scene modes, and a True High Dynamic Range (HDR) feature that captures a series of 3 bracketed images and combines them into a single optimized image with a full range of highlight, midrange, and shadow detail.
The Pentax K-x can capture up to 1900 exposures on a set of AA lithium batteries and is also compatible with AA NiMH and alkaline batteries.

I was very impressed with all this cameras features. If you are looking to upgrade to camera that aloes you creare trulla professional looping photos then tris is the camera for you. It is not as heavy as you would think especially with the 300 mm lens attached. I love the red, it is very original and different. My only true complaint is the fact that it takes double a batteries, which can be costly and generally don't last very long. Note you can buy rechargeable batteries but this still don't last long ESP when using camera in Live Mode.

This camera targets the DSLR entry market.
Looking just at the specsheets, it clearly outperforms every other in its price range.
Yet, there's a bit of a problem:
It does leave the impression that
in the long run it means a less durable value for a still quite significant investment.
Buyers usually go for low price and high performance.
However, a trade-off between the two is tricky business ...
And this may well be the case with the K-x:
1) It is by far not 'dirt cheap'.
2) This makes hard to accept
the number of issues with quality and technology, such as the battery, or AF operation. Speaking of the latter:
a) it is slow(er than competition's lens-embedded)
b) expecting a perfect synergy between body and lens, it is hard to understand why the K-x makes clumsy (futile, noisy and battery-killing) attempts to drive the lens past the focusing limits, when the tele-lens is pointing to an object that's too close. Even most compacts don't do this!
Bottom line: The low(er) price of the Pentax K-x may not be all THAT competitive.
Especially, if you don't want to feel somewhat diminished (just a couple of months later) in the presence of some other entry DSLR owner.

#with AF & IS
the camera shakes with clumsy & noisy vibration;
AF & IS are slow and inefficient,
leaving the impression of a badly conceived & manufactured child's toy;
this even casts serious doubt on the Pentax production quality-control standards
#Power
--- refused to work with NiMH rechargeables;
--- failed contact with a set of regular AA;
--- drained another set of fresh regular AA within a SINGLE flash shot!

This is my first SLR camera so I'm not qualified to compare it with others out there but I am very happy with it. I especially like the low light photos it produces. I specifically bought it for that purpose.The only problem I had was the high battery drain but I fixed that by installing the firmware update off the Pentax website.

This is my first DSLR camera and love it! We have a new born little girl and our other small digital camera just takes to long. Also have an older 35mm Canon AE-1 but must have a DSLR. With the 300mm zoom lens you won't miss a thing. Fast shutter and able to take 4-5 frames per second, love the camera. It takes excellent pictures even in the auto point and shoot mode! Can't wait to actually be able to use the camera to it's full abilities!

I decided after several years I wanted another SLR camera but digital this time. I did lots of research on DSLR cameras. The more research I did, the more I liked the Pentax k-x.
I plan on using the camera to take pictures of the kids, dogs, and landscapes.
I love the red color. The buttons on the back of the camera are very easy to use. The others had too many buttons - didn't look easy to use. I compared this camera with Canon EOS Rebel XS and Nikon D3000. The shake reduction system is nice and not available on the other cameras. It is also nice and compact. Easy for one hand operation.
Overall, this is an excellent camera in my opinion. I did lots and lots of research, hours and hours. This is easily the best one.

I bought this camera to take pictures of my family and to have better vacation shots. We are an active family, and I have grown tired of taking a great pic, only to be disappointed by the quality. I have mostly kept it on automatic, so far. I can not wait to get more familiar with the manual settings, but as I said, I am a novice.

My son-in-law asked us to research this camera as a Christmas gift that he was planning on purchasing for our daughter. The more I read, the more I wanted one for myself. This is a top of the line product at a great affordable price. I ordered during the holy days while the store was closed[...]. I plan to keep B&H in mind when I consider additional purchases.
