I've used this product for 3 days now, have taken several hundred photos, and so far I have been very favorably impressed by its versatility and quality. The zoom range is superb, it focuses quickly in good light, the image stabilization permits sharp handheld pictures at very long equivalent focal lengths, and the image quality at ISOs of 400 and below is surprisingly good for a small sensor camera, especially if you are willing to work with RAW. Given the focal length range I keep looking for soft corners and chromatic aberation and I don't see much of either. This camera has good quality glass.
The only nit that I can pick with the handling is the camera's rather small and low resolution EVF. Its hard to see if the focus is on when you have a small subject in a busy background (as in birding). The LCD on the other hand is quite good and I'm beginning to think that I will use it more than I usually do with this camera.
The FZ100 has very useful high burst capabilities, and from the few test clips I've shot, HD video seems to be of good quality. The camera focuses in video mode, and you can zoom, albeit slowly (which is actually not a bad thing). If you have young children or grandchildren, don't overlook the high speed video scene mode. The quality is low (QVGA), but the kids will get a kick out of watching themselves in slow motion.
I have a DLSR kit that offers similar zoom capabilities but it requires packing two expensive lenses and weighs more than 5 times as much as the FZ100. I'll use the DSLR when I need the very best image quality I can get, especially when I expect the light to be iffy, but its not much good if its not with me and its just to bulky for casual carrying. If you are a DLSR owner looking for a smaller, lighter walkaround camera I highly recommend that you consider the FZ100. If you are a point and shoot user who wants to expand your photographic horizions, the FZ100 should be on your short list as well.

I use the camera for travel and family. The lens is terrific, but the electronics do not take advantage of it. The camera is easy to handle and to carry, and the zoom range is awesome. The camera is so loaded with jpeg picture compensating software that one needs so much time to get a desired effect as to make it useless. I could only get satisfactory pictures by disabling all of these features. The same things are true of the video, but the video and sound are better than any other hybrid camera that I have used. Raw pictures may possibly be great, but I have not yet been able to understand the conversion software, and none of my computer software (Adobe) will even display the raw pictures. Panasonic has not yet made spare batteries available, so I hesitate to take the camera on a trip because I feel that the battery will not support a full day of photo and video shooting. I am hoping that these problems will be corrected by new firmware and battery availability. Meanwhile, my old camera goes on my upcoming trip.

The battery life is really the only downside I can think of to this camera, other than the range for the aperture. (F2.8 - F8 when zoomed all the way out)

We were looking for a all around point and shoot camera that was close to the quality of a DSLR. This is perfect the camera for us. The shutter speed is really fast. The quality is very good and the programmed features are great.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100 Digital Camera:
I am an amateur photographer with ambition. This is my first foray into the world of higher quality photos. I read several reviews which complained of poor photo quality, but I have found that if you spend time with the manual and learn the ins and outs of the camera's many features it is more than possible to take shots that rival those of much more expensive cameras.
The zoom is more than ample, I recently took a series of full-moon shots utilizing both the optical and digital zoom, and they turned out fantastically.
The picture quality does degrade under low light conditions, but fiddling with the features one can minimize this and still achieve good night photos.
The video quality is very impressive, although a steady hand helps. The microphone is decent enough to record good family films or YouTube worthy HD videos.
Granted, this is not a DSLR. However, it takes the average point-and-shoot and blows it out of the water with features, and improved photography. However, if you require pristine photos every time, and consider yourself a professional, I would recommend purchasing something far out of this price range.
As for me, I would definitely buy it again.

As an advanced amateur of advancing age, my DSLR with lenses (including a 3 lb. 70-200 f2.8) was breaking my back. The Lumix FZ100 has all the power, speed and beautiful images that I need or want. Highly recommended.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100 Digital Camera:
This is a very person friedly camera. I keep finding different ways (modes) to use it under similar conditions. Just go to the SCN Mode and I find the situation I am looking for. Or, simply turn to Ai and take my picture.
For my recent interest in bird and wildlife photograpy, I have success from humming birds to pelicans with good quality pictures comparing to results with my SLR and high power zoom lenses. While setting it at AF Mode, the autofocus is a little slower than I like to have. But it is workable with multiple shot mode to get reasonable results. With MF mode being difficult to refine with this camera, I am happy with AF Mode.
There is a little concern with the lenshood as it does not turn to zero degree position besides that it has a very loose fit and does not lock in properly. It is about 5 degrees off. With that, a little movement either direction, there're black corners in the wide angle pictures. So I just don't use it.
For me, been traveling around with my two SLR cameras and three lenses, this is an excellent alternate and/or backup camera to have.
The battery and the filter work just fine too.

I had a Lumix DMC-FZ20 and really liked it. When the time came to trade it for a newer camara I was very hapy to see that Panasonic had kept their line gowing strong so decided to stay with a Lumix camera. I really like the new larger LCD display on this camera, which make the video feature more pleasent to use, and enjoy the more powerfull zoom a lot.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100 Digital Camera:
Although I have several compact cameras, including one which has a big zoom the same size, I bought this camera solely because it has HD video (1028). To be honest, I haven't done much video but I am seriously impressed with the sharpness of the pictures. And, the zoom--incredible hand-helds--with the adapter I can attach a 1.7 telephoto conversion lens that I already have and get even more incredible pictures. And, the video? Yes, it is too, is incredible.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100 Digital Camera:
I have a dSLR and bought this camera for more casual shootings. It is of a good size, small and light enough to carry around (but it is big enough to be easily noticeable though). It is very easy to use (disclaimer: I used to have an FZ30 and am familiar with the FZ series), and it has some flexibility in manual controls so that one can play with the aperture, shutter speed, iso, compensation ... if needed. Image quality is good for this kind of camera. It is very usable up to ISO-200, and the noise gets obvious from ISO-400 (still OK for small prints like 4x6). It produces vivid colors with the standard setting, with a tint of yellowish-ness. It also can take images in raw files for more re-touching. Resolution is good, and sharpness is Ok. The 24x zoom range is the best selling point. All in all, it is a very worthy and versatile camera for travel and casual shooting.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100 Digital Camera:
I had researched for MONTHS reading reviews, watching videos, looking, thinking, touching and sleeping on it and got down to 3 of this same style point and shoot cameras. I held one, and I thought the battery door was going to drop out. (I actually had read about that on a review and thought, yeah, right, but it really felt that way.) Finally the model that replaced my last P&S style camera came in stock so I ended up buying it but I was not happy with the Lag Time when I wanted to start a video while the dial was on another shooting mode. Because of that and some focusing issues I decided to purchase the FZ100.
I had never actually held the FZ100 camera before I ordered it. I do have to say it does feel good in my hand. (that's a biggie for me!) There were so many positive reviews on this camera on this site about this camera plus it had higher ratings then the other camera I had just purchased. I have to admit that when I saw the negative I kind of ignored it because I really wanted a camera that had the hot shoe and the winning factor for me was the external mic input (the suggested mic and the extra part they say you need DO NOT FIT into the camera.) I also talked with some video people who were shooting with the previous model how they just LOVED the camera. I watched them shoot and was impressed. They said they liked the camera better than the larger production cameras they normally use for their TV show. (Video is VERY important to me on this style camera)
When I got the camera I did a lot of STUPID shots/videos of my pets outside and some stuff inside which I didn't know about the return policy saying less than 200 shots otherwise I would have returned the camera after my stupid test shots, but figured even the other camera wasn't getting anything to write home about. So I took it out to shoot some night shots. That is one thing I can say the camera did do a nice job on. I did a few other test and always liked the photos/video from the other camera better. They were clearer even when the ISO was higher than the Lumix.
When I pulled the photos up in Lightroom 3 you could see a huge difference between the imagine quality. The other camera used higher ISO to achieve a better photo, but the surprising part was it was LESS GRAINY then the Lumix with a low ISO. I had heard that anything past 400 on the FZ100 camera was noisy, boy is it. I didn't think it would start looking grainy below 200 ISO!
The video & video stills are NIGHT & DAY different. I could actually print something I shot with the other camera from the video verses a camera still shot from the Lumix. I think my 2 year old P&S camera might take better video.
I will give positives to these features: good size for its body style, good zoom, cool screen, hot shoe, mic input, starry night, does have a manual focus mode.
Dislikes: video quality, video stills are very poor quality, video stabilization does not make the video look clear.

I am an advanced amateur but was tired of carrying more than three pounds of photo equipment in my trips and being afraid of showing my lens in some not so safe places. Needed a little learning period to handle photo/film alternatives and etc. First quality videos and a perfect Artificial Intelligence alternative for quick shots.

I like the camera very much in general.
Only issue I have is lack of details on dark object/person with high backlight. Maybe it got to do with how it is used.
