By combining a high-quality lens and sensor ready for a variety of shooting conditions with a wide-range of accessories and manual controls, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 Digital Camera (White) is ideal for professional photographers and serious amateurs looking for a compact digital camera that allows for a full range of creative photography capabilities.
The camera incorporates a wide angle f/2.0 aperture Leica DC Vario- Summicron lens with 3.8x wide-angle optical zoom (equivalent to 24mm - 90mm on a 35mm film camera) and the MEGA O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) system. The camera also incorporates an enhanced 1/1.63-inch CCD that is capable of capturing 10.1-Megapixels and has been designed to provide more space for each pixel to minimize image noise and optimize image quality and dynamic range. The CCD is also capable of reproducing images in 4 aspect ratios (4:3, 3:2, 16:9 or 1:1), and the Multi Aspect mode allows the camera to take an image in all three aspect ratios simultaneously. It also boasts the Venus Engine FHD high performance image processing LSI to dramatically reduce image noise (even using the high sensitivity setting of ISO 12800), and provide fast shooting performance with an incredibly fast shutter lag, and burst shooting capability.
The DMC-LX5 is further distinguished from other cameras by its full manual capability for both stills and video. These features include a Film mode that allows users to emulate the effects of different film types, a multiple-exposure feature for creating artistic photos by overlaying up to three consecutive images, and easy-to-use Manual modes that give the user greater shot-making flexibility and control. If you choose not to use the manual mode, then Intelligent Auto Mode will do all the work for you. In addition the camera can also capture video clips in HD, and standard video formats.
The camera's large 3.0-inch LCD is outstanding for both shooting and viewing. With a 3:2 aspect ratio and high 460,000-dot resolution, the LCD panel provides bright, easy-to-see images over a wider viewing angle. Furthermore, the Intelligent LCD function, assures comfortable viewing in virtually all conditions by automatically adjusting the backlighting of LCD as the ambient light level changes. The camera also provides an impressive slideshow feature where users can select the images, choose for a series of creative transitions and even add music to the presentation - all within the camera. And the camera has HD output capability (Requires an optional HDMI cable) to view your images, slideshows and video clips in beautiful HD quality.

As a frequent traveller I have owned and loved every iteration of Panasonic's LX range of cameras from LX1 to LX3. I have found these cameras to be perfect for travel with powerful features, total controllability, amazing image quality and, most importantly, portability. My LXs have each been my constant travelling companion in a belt mounted pouch, instantly ready for action with the wrist strap fitted for security. The LX5 maintains the tradition with its f2 lens, an even better sensor and processing engine, its 10+ megapixel count, and the addition of a 1:1 format to the already practical and easily accessed options of 4:3, 6:4 and 16:9. There are other features which top off the improvements including the powerful video facility, the levelling assistance, automated contrast control and a slightly longer zoom. I also purchased the optional EVF which remains on the camera and is used in bright sunshine when the rear screen is sometimes difficult to see. The major minus to me is the lack of a printed manual. The camera is so packed with features that a full manual in the hip pocket is pretty well a must, at least in the early stages of ownership. Unfortunately my manual is a pdf on my iPad - not very convenient when a quick glance at the manual is needed - and an iPad will not fit in my pocket! But as a camera, like all of the LX range it produces brilliant results, so much so that I now never travel with my high end SLR equipment.

I purchased this camera for taking pictures of just about anything but mostly of my 4 month old daughter. We've been using a ZS7 superzoom but I was noticing some pretty major low-light limitations. Photos were noisy, blurry and generally of poor quality. Hence the LX5.
The nice, fast lens, larger sensor, great wide angle and small(ish) size make this a very attractive option. It does take great pictures, but I didn't end up thinking this was the one.
First, it's too big to be really easy to carry around. It's no SLR, but it is actually a fairly large camera. Second, the mode dials on the lens are useful but ultimately a bust. They are easy to inadvertently move and really can screw up your pictures. Third, and this is the real deal breaker, is the independent lens cap. There's no built-in lens protections, so you've got to mess with the darn lens cap every time you want to use the camera. It's just not appropriate on this type of camera...Panasonic needs to wake up and add an integrated shutter-type lens cap on this machine.
Ultimately, we went with a Canon S95. The lens isn't quite as bright over its zoom range, the wide angle end isn't quite as wide. But it's WAY smaller, has an integrated lens cap and is a much better camera in my opinion.

It is simply a fantastic little camera. It does everything that it should - great fast lens (F/2.0 - 3.3) - nice image quality. Resolution is perfect as I don't want to have 20MP on a little sensor...! Video quality is great also!

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 Digital Camera (White):
I use this camera as a personal accessory, but as I am a photographer I need to have something good. And this camera is really good. I was about to buy the Leica and pay double price, then the salesman showed me the Panasonic, which is almost (or totally) the same. I love her size, color and design.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 Digital Camera (White):
compact, lots of options/settings, good video (Olympus XZ-1 only shoots 7 min continuous), good photo, wide lens.
I wanted a large sensor camera that would fit into a pocket, this is the smallest you will find with the biggest sensor and high end lens. Fits in pocket but lens makes it a bit bulky so no skinny jeans.

Comments about Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX5 Digital Camera (White):
I use this camera most for travelling. It has a very good f/2.0, 24mm lens and large sensor. The image quality is excellent for low light and hi ISO. Also, it makes very good HD movies with full zoom control (no noise during zooming). The only issue with this camera is reduced zoom range (24-90mm). If this range is enough, you will love this camera!

For general shooting and more creative endeavors the Panasonic LX 5 has been a superb camera. Works great in nearly all lighting conditions, even at a higher ISO the noise is minimal enough to be corrected by software. I wish I would have gotten one sooner instead of lugging around my DSLR on those longer cycling trips. Fast operation, highly customizable, great video recording; the only thing it's lacking really is being bomb proof, other than that, it's a 5 star compact.

This camera is a perfect step between the point-and-shoot and an SLR. I can easily find all of the setting options and the pictures turn out wonderfully, except for the occasional user error:)

I am a rank amateur and bought this camera on the advice of a friend. I am tickled pink. I LOVE this camera. It's a little too complicated for me to use all the features, but it takes absolutely stunning still photos and videos using the intelligent auto mode. I love the color too (I bought a white one). It's just so cute, and it feels really solid. I would recommend this camera to anyone wanting a quality product.

I bought this product after reading tons of review between Panasonic Lumix LX5 and Canon S95. I chose Lumix LX5 and I'm very happy I did. It's point and shot but at the same time gives you controls and features of SLR cam. The result is incredulous! I take night shots mostly and am amazed by several options available to me. From A-priority to Manual to Scenes and Custom 1 & 2. I've explored each settings and what more can I say... goodbye to bulky SLR esp if you're on trips/tour.

I bought this camera for travel. It's great in low-light situations: night city scenes, fireworks. Took better pics than my friend's big DSLR. Its auto focus is fast & accurate--a drastic improvement over my Nikon point-n-shoot.
Only minor draw back is its PC software needs improvement--kinda kludgy to use.

The camera is very sleek, fits well in my hand and while it is not heavy it doesn't feel uncomfortable.
The camera has a wide range of features, which can be a little over-whelming at first but eventually become second nature to use.
Image quality is excellent and I would highly recommend this camera to anyone who wants a high quality camera without the bulk of a DSLR.
