While the AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Zoom Lens from Nikon is designed primarily for use with FX-format D-SLR cameras, it's equally at home on any DX-format D-SLR camera. As a standard 5.0x zoom on an FX-format camera body, it's perfect for landscapes, portraits, and weddings - it's an excellent choice for a perfect take-along-everywhere lens. On a DX-format camera, the focal length gets a 1.5x bump that turns it into a formidable longer-range optic with enough wide angle for all but the widest of shots.
The AF-S 24-120 ED VR is a versatile imaging tool with a constant maximum aperture of f/4.0 - this enables photographers to maintain exposure settings throughout the entire zoom range. For those critical focusing-moments - the M/A focus mode switch allows the shooter to quickly change between manual and autofocus modes.
Nikon's optical engineers have graced the lens elements with their proprietary Super Integrated Coating- a superior multicoating process that enhances light transmission for maximum clarity, crispness, and contrast. Additionally this NIKKOR offering also benefits from Nikon's very own Nano Crystal Coat - a high-tech lens treatment that ensures maximum imaging quality by limiting or eliminating the negative effects from ghosting, flare, and glare.
Low-light shooters will greatly appreciate the benefits from the addition of Nikon's VR II image stabilization system. This amazing internal virtual-tripod allows photographers to work with shutter-speeds up to 4x slower than usual - whether it's a candle-lit snap-shot or a moody portrait taken in a dark alley-way under a dingy street-lamp - hand-held photographers can rely on the AF-S 24-120 ED VR for sharp, clear, and extremely well-detailed imaging.

Before ordering the Nikkor AF-S 24-120mm f:4 G ED VR N lens, I did my usual research: I read all the reviews on the B&H website and also checked its MTF graph on the [@]. I also checked the MTF graphs of comparable lenses on both the [@]. In addition, I studied the report on an in-depth trial of this lens on the [@].Many reviews of this lens strongly criticise its distortion and vignetting. The Mansurov test, while showing some distortion (barrel distortion at 24mm and pincushion from 28 to 120mm) and vignetting on FX sensors, indicated that this was not a particular problem with general photography. My own comparison with tests of similar lenses and study of the relevant MTF graphs led me to believe that the performance of the Nikkor 24-120 ought to be little different from that of other lenses with a similar zoom ratio. Besides, the MTF graphs clearly showed that the fall-off in performance only became significant beyond 15mm from the picture centre. In other words, vignetting should not be a problem on DX sensors.I also ran a test series with my Sigma DG 28-70mm f:2.8 EX lens and got very slight pincushion distortion throughout its range – a fact which I had never noticed before, even though I have used it extensively for three years. It is one of the best lenses I have ever owned, giving excellent sharpness, contrast and colour rendition and no vignetting over its full zoom range.I cannot understand why the new Nikkor 24-120 lens has attracted so much adverse criticism, while other lenses with similar characteristics are accepted without a murmur. As my cameras all have DX sensors (2xD90s, 1xD300S) I got to thinking that I might find the performance of the Nikkor 24-120 quite acceptable. And because the zoom range is particularly suitable for everyday carry, I decided to give it a try.I received my copy from B&H on 17th January, 2011, and immediately ran some tests for distortion and vignetting on all three cameras. As I expected, distortion was minimal and vignetting absent. Unlike the Mansurov test, my test showed slight pincushion distortion all the way from 24 to 120mm. It could only be noticed on straight vertical or horizontal lines, placed close to the edges of the photograph, and even so, one had to look for it.All such things are relative and in the eye of the beholder: what I consider to be slight distortion, might give a photographer of architecture the cold shivers. But then, this lens is not meant for architectural photography. The PC Nikkors are designed for that. Neither is it a macro lens. After the distortion tests, I ran a series of tests of the Nikon GP-1 GPS unit, which I had received together with the lens (see separate review) taking hundreds of photographs to establish the accuracy/repeatability of the GPS readings. All these photographs showed excellent sharpness, contrast and colour rendition at all focal lengths and apertures, even wide open – and many of these photos were taken in very poor light. In fact, these test pictures were indistinguishable from similar ones taken with my Sigma 28-70mm f:2.8 – and I love that Sigma. It is as good as they come! The 24-120 lens is very solidly constructed, focussing, even in low-light conditions, is quick and accurate, all controls are handy, smooth and easy to work with, and the VR system works perfectly.Incidentally, one of the B&H reviewers stated that his lens was made in China, citing that as a minus point. My lens was made in Thailand, as were all my camera bodies. I frankly doubt that Nikon has a plant in China, producing the same lens.Would I buy another copy? Heck, yes! I can highly recommend this lens!

I had pre-ordered this lens and had anxiously awaited it for over a month to make life easier for me when shooting a wedding. It was to replace my Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8 so that I wouldn't have to switch to my 70-200mm f2.8 VR as often in certain situations. After using the new lens exclusively with the D700 on a wedding, I was appalled when I processed the images on my computer. Every one except for the most extreme telephoto focal lengths caved in at the middle area of all four sides, even when I crouched down to take a photo at a direct angle to the subject. I had to adjust each image 8 points in the Adobe Lightroom 3 parallax distortion function to make it look normal. Other than that, it focused as well as the 24-70 f2.8 and the optics seemed acceptable. Hopefully I just got a defective unit because I can't believe Nikon would knowingly put out a product like this. As usual, B&H's return process was hassle free and I was treated with respect. I'm going to e-mail a sampling of the images to Nikon to get their reaction.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Zoom Lens:
This lens replaced a couple lenses of mine and for that I am grateful. The optics are great and it is decently sharp. F4 is a good idea in a lot of photography anyways so it is my a hindrance to me at all.
I would say that it vinyettes super hard, it does fringe a bit but it's a one click fix in Lightroom. So the only other complaint is that it is a bit top heavy and slow to focus. I have a d700 with a grip and it wants dive forward.
The reason I still gave it 4 stars is because there isn't really anything out there that compares. It does everything good. The only other options are to buy prime lenses and smaller zoom ranges and constantly switch lenses and possibly miss hits in the process.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Zoom Lens:
This lens performs very consistently, my images are super clear and defined. It works great on both DX and FX formats, having both I like a lens I can interchange if needed. The only thing I wish it had was lower aperture. :) Excellent and reliable!

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Zoom Lens:
THis lens is really sharp and has produced, for me, many beautiful shots. The autofocus hones in quickly so I don't lose photo ops that won't repeat themselves. Some of my best photos are candids, so the lens I use must be quick. All the shots I've taken with the lens have been optimal. I love it and, in many respects, produces results you normally only expect from high quality prime lenses.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Zoom Lens:
This is a great lens to have. I rented the 28-300 then the 24-120 to try before I bought and found the 24-120 to be outstanding. It's light and is not top heavy(long length)like my 24-70. The picture quality is excellent. With the VR I can shoot in low light without my tripod. I highly recommend this lens.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Zoom Lens:
I just got this lens so haven't fully used it in all my travel, portraits or close ups. But I have tried it on San Francisco Bay sceneryand on my dog. I shoot with the Nikon D700. To test the lens, I switched to my 24-70 at the same ISO and aperture. Couldn't tell the difference in clarity on the landscape or the eyelashes and whiskers of the dog. Got crystal clarity with both lenses and the same amount of barrel distortion at 24mm on scenery with both lenses. No distortion or vignetting on either lens at 70mm. I also shot scenery at the longer focal lengths and switched to my 70-300 f4-f5.6 to test the longer focal lengths. Couldn't tell the difference in the pictures. This lens will be perfect for travel where you don't want to carry a backpack full of lenses. It won't take the place of the 14-24 or the 105 f2.8, but sure will be great for everything you use the 24-70 for, without the size or weight, and when you don't need a longer lens. I read the positive and negative reviews and think the Mansurovs positive review is more accurate than the Ken Rockwell negative review. Great lens on a Nikon D700.

I was apprehensive to purchase this lens and after spending about 2 weeks with the lens I can say that I'm very pleased with the lens as a good walk around lens on my D700. The constant F/4 aperture coupled with the VRII make for a good low light lens. It's pretty sharp at f/4 as well

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Zoom Lens:
All I can say is wow! This lens delivers in all situations: fast, accurate, beautiful colors, excellent contrast, and a nice range of focal lengths. Mounted on the D3, it also performs surprising well in low light. The 24-70 f/2.8 is 1 stop faster but the D3 body's fast ISO range makes the difference between f/4 and f/2.8 negligible, so I'd rather have the longer focal lengths. For very dark situations, an f/1.4 lens would be the better choice anyway. The 24-120 f/4, along with the 14-24 f/2.8, makes a complete kit for going anywhere for a variety of subjects. Highly recommended!

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Zoom Lens:
Great walk around lens.
The focall length is great on a DX camera too (D300s). It's wide enough for most purposes and has enough telephoto reach to give you the ability to take great portraits outside.
I tested the VR and it gives great and SHARP results. At 50mm, I was able to let in as much light as my 50 1.4 by shooting at 1/13 sec and still got a sharp result. Of course, the 1.4 has way more pleasant bokeh but as a zoom lens, it is great if you want to catch that shot late at night outdoors that you just would not have been able to otherwise.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Zoom Lens:
I have several fast (2.8) zooms, all FX. I don't own any DX lenses. This one is a stop slower and as a result considerably lighter while covering a longer range. And it is VR which none of my others are. VR does seem to work well and I can always turn it off. With all of my current digital bodies the loss of one stop doesn't seem to be much of inhibitor and the weight loss a big benefit. And while I am heading toward more primes and using my zooms a bit less this is a welcome addition. Originally it was intended for my daughter but I may just keep it for myself.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Zoom Lens:
Oh yea, that distortion is definitely there, especially on the wide side.
Otherwise it seems well built and if you're not doing shots that show the distortion the images have good contrast and color.
I compared the focus speed against my 70-200 f2.8 VR and could see little if any difference. Low light will probably slow it a bit because of the f4 max aperture.
I got it mainly to use when I do video because of the VR. None of my other mid ranges have VR.
MUCH MUCH MUCH improved quality over the old 24-120. I still have that one laying around and never use it. OK--I pawned it off on my wife--she's not a picky as I am!

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Zoom Lens:
Long overdue I needed for my F6. Has all the current Nikon high techs; VRII, Nano coat, ED, and aspherical glass.
Using AF-S 50/1.4G as the reference to compare:
Much faster focus
Very sharp as a zoom, Nano coat really helps
here almost no fringes, almost as sharp as
50/1.4G
Very high contrast as a zoom, very slight lower
than 50/1.4G
Color saturation excellent as a zoom, 50/1.4G
wins here
I have no negatives for this as a zoom lens. That puts 50/1.4G to shame. It should have faster focus, VRII, and Nano coat. Nikon said it would be too expensive to put these on a standard lens. If you can't produce the best standard lens, you are not world class, Nikon.
For those who thinks overpriced, yet it is. But you pay lots more at Yodobashi Camera in Japan (August 2011 price). It is a bargain at B&H, I bought with US warranty.
