I produce independent television and short films utilizing DVX100b and HVX200a cameras. I decided to move into DSLR video production specifically due to this camera. I've shot still photography for years on Nikon with beautiful results. With this camera I can now get those looks on video without buying overly expensive 35mm adapters for video cameras. I've seen a lot of complaints elsewhere about the "jello effect" this camera supposedly has. I don't see any more than you'd get on normal CMOS censors as long as you aren't a moron and know how to operate video/film cameras. I've gotten bit rates up to 21mbps, which for some people is too low, but if you're like me and shooting with HDTV or the web in mind I think it's an appropriate bit rate. You ARE able to use manual controls for shooting, you just have to lock them with the AE-Lock button before you move into live view. All exposure functions (ISO, F-stop, Shutter, White balance) can be locked giving you for all extents and purposes full manual control in video mode. Manual focus and Exposure compensation are available to tweak while recording. Subject Tracking AF is useful for tracking and steadicam shots, but outside of that I wouldn't really consider using automatic features. It doesn't have microphone inputs, but I record to a separate audio recorder anyways. I've also done some quick chromakey tests with it and pulled decent keys without much work.
With Nikon's 35mm F1.8 DX prime lens this camera is capable of some really stunning cinematic HD video. Against Canon cameras in a similar price range the D3100 appeared much more cinematic in quality, whereas the Canon had more of a video look to me. Of course if you can afford it the D7000 would be even better, but if you're like me and can't justify paying more than double the price of this camera than the D3100 is right for you.

Pros: Clean pictures, Big Viewfinder, Good Value
Cons: Live view doesnt change when settings are changed, Autofocus makes so much noise in video it is unuseable, No Built in IR Remote support, No Bracketing, AF is slow.
Other than the complaints listed above, this is a good entry level camera. I guess I was just hoping for more. I dont like buying a camera that is stripped down this much only to lower the price. The video is pretty much useless with AF. There is so much noise from it, it shouldnt even be advertised it is so bad. Plus the Live View doesnt work properly. Canons live view changes when you change the camera settings like Aperture or shutter speed. This camera does not, you have to turn off live view, then turn it back on to see your changes, which is running up acuations on the camera as well. I am most disappointed that there is no IR for a remote. Most of Nikons previous entry cameras had this feature. It is a disappointment that they removed this. And the face tracking AF is only available in certain modes for some reason.
I have a G10 that is more impressive than this camera.

I bought this after I used my Brother D5100. I loved his but wanted one for betrter sports action of my girl in high school. I have had it three weeks and it has so many neat easy to use possibilities. I have taken running and soccer photos that freeae the action from 50 yards out with the 55-300 lens, taken close in shots of animals in the back yard, distance photos of the mountains behind our house. It will bw great for a trip to Japan this summer!

I bought this as a gift to my 9 year old daughter since D3100 has a slightly small form factor compared to other digital SLR, it is easy to manage in small hands. Apart from it, picture quality is fabulous. Also, the easy guide really helps those who are starting new.

As a first time DSLR owner, I would highly recommend this camera to amature photographers or novices who want to get into the DSLR photograqhy. The camera is extremely user friendly providing the shooter all the necessary "selection" options to take an excellent photograph. The camera body, though a bit on the small side, does have a good construction to it. Overall an excellent camaera for a beginner.

Comments about Nikon D3100 Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm NIKKOR VR Lens:
I have had my D3100 for only three weeks, but it has more than exceeded my expectations thus far. As a beginning DSLR user, I especially appreciate the on-screen help. The step-by-step instructions have helped build my confidence for exploring the camera's full range of functions as I get used to operating it manually. The vibration reduction feature is great, too. I have already taken some excellent pictures of birds in flight. That's something I never expected to accomplish at this point. The D3100 is everything I hoped it would be, and more. Much more.

Fast picture rate, the last camera I had took a couple of seconds between each shot where as this one can take one right after another in an instant
Also the presets are awesome for aperture preferred or shutter preferred settings
one downside is that the camera likes to use the flash for most shots even when there is a fair amount of light
For the upsides I've been testing the camera quite a bit in different environments from capturing: moving objects both large and small, animals, close ups of plants/bugs, indoors and outdoor shots, day with bright sun and night with only the moon, and so far with only a few days and well over a thousand photos this camera has truly out performed my expectations.

This was my first DSLR camera and so far i like the guide button. It shows you the camera capabilities and the right mode for your picture taking. Picture image is awesome compared to my Canon T2i. Nikon lenses are better than Canon's too. Bottom line, it is the greatest camera for this price range.

Comments about Nikon D3100 Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm NIKKOR VR Lens:
I purchased the Nikon D3100 from B&H Photo as my first step in the DSLR world. I've shot 35mm for many years and had little point and shoot digital cameras too, but I wanted a SLR feel with the convenience of a point and shoot camera. The Nikon D3100 has both. Although I'm still working my way through the User Guide and figuring out all of the knobs, buttons and settings it has been easy to take good pictures with little research. I'm hoping to increase my knowledge and start taking more creative shots in the near future. I would like to upgrade someday from the entry level camera, but I'm very happy with the quality of this camea and the ease of operation.

this is a lightweight camera, performing very well in different light conditions, with very vivid colors, and with enough resolution for the majority of purposes. The video clips are too short (only 10min), enough for family and friends, but not so for some professional purposes.

Comments about Nikon D3100 Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm NIKKOR VR Lens:
Due to hardship, I had to sell my original nikon DSLR that I loved! I am still recovering economically, so Nikon's D3100 was what I could afford - for now.
The D3100 has an easy to use interface, and is similar enough to my other, middle-of-the-line DSLR that it is easy to use. I photograph mostly in manual or aperture priority, and as noted, this camera works well for an entry level DSLR.
I am putting my money in prime lenses for the time being, until I can buy a more expensive DSLR. But for my current needs, the Nikon D3100 is a perfect fit.

DX-Nikkor lenses are engineered and optimized for use on Nikon DX-format D-SLRs and are designed to cover the smaller image area of the DX sensor. When a DX lens is mounted on an FX-format Nikon D-SLR, the camera's DX-Crop Mode is automatically engaged, introducing a 1.5x magnification (cropping) factor.
