I produce independent television and short films utilizing DVX100b and HVX200a cameras. I decided to move into DSLR video production specifically due to this camera. I've shot still photography for years on Nikon with beautiful results. With this camera I can now get those looks on video without buying overly expensive 35mm adapters for video cameras. I've seen a lot of complaints elsewhere about the "jello effect" this camera supposedly has. I don't see any more than you'd get on normal CMOS censors as long as you aren't a moron and know how to operate video/film cameras. I've gotten bit rates up to 21mbps, which for some people is too low, but if you're like me and shooting with HDTV or the web in mind I think it's an appropriate bit rate. You ARE able to use manual controls for shooting, you just have to lock them with the AE-Lock button before you move into live view. All exposure functions (ISO, F-stop, Shutter, White balance) can be locked giving you for all extents and purposes full manual control in video mode. Manual focus and Exposure compensation are available to tweak while recording. Subject Tracking AF is useful for tracking and steadicam shots, but outside of that I wouldn't really consider using automatic features. It doesn't have microphone inputs, but I record to a separate audio recorder anyways. I've also done some quick chromakey tests with it and pulled decent keys without much work.
With Nikon's 35mm F1.8 DX prime lens this camera is capable of some really stunning cinematic HD video. Against Canon cameras in a similar price range the D3100 appeared much more cinematic in quality, whereas the Canon had more of a video look to me. Of course if you can afford it the D7000 would be even better, but if you're like me and can't justify paying more than double the price of this camera than the D3100 is right for you.

Pros: Clean pictures, Big Viewfinder, Good Value
Cons: Live view doesnt change when settings are changed, Autofocus makes so much noise in video it is unuseable, No Built in IR Remote support, No Bracketing, AF is slow.
Other than the complaints listed above, this is a good entry level camera. I guess I was just hoping for more. I dont like buying a camera that is stripped down this much only to lower the price. The video is pretty much useless with AF. There is so much noise from it, it shouldnt even be advertised it is so bad. Plus the Live View doesnt work properly. Canons live view changes when you change the camera settings like Aperture or shutter speed. This camera does not, you have to turn off live view, then turn it back on to see your changes, which is running up acuations on the camera as well. I am most disappointed that there is no IR for a remote. Most of Nikons previous entry cameras had this feature. It is a disappointment that they removed this. And the face tracking AF is only available in certain modes for some reason.
I have a G10 that is more impressive than this camera.

Comments about Nikon D3100 Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm NIKKOR VR Lens:
This is my everyday & anything camera and I absolutely love it. When I first turned it on my heart kind of dropped as this was my first time viewing the screen of a REAL camera, but it was a lot easier than I thought it would be. Although I did have two photographer friends to help if I needed it. :) The quaility is amazing and the settings seem endless. You do need to mess around with the settings quite a bit in order to really learn it and figure out what settings work best for what, but when you do, it is well worth it.
I would definitely recommend this camera.

The worse: Panoramic photos feature missing. Full HD vídeo is not so full HD. The auto-focus for video is not so great. If you don´t press the shot button you will have unfocused vids.
The best: All resources are fantastic for non-professional users. It makes photos with such quality as a professional cam does.

I love that it will shoot continuous shots...and the ease with which you can shoot. Haven't been able to experiment much with it yet, but I'm sure I'm going to love it!
The only thing I can say a little on the down side is that it is bulkier than my other camera. However, my other camera is a Coolpix and I can fit it in my purse and go, BUT, the Nikon D3100 has MUCH more capability.

Received this camera just in time for my disney vacation. Excellent camera takes wonderful pics either day or night and at 14.2mp pics look amazing.
I would recommend Extreme SDHC(atleast class 10) with this for better performance.

Comments about Nikon D3100 Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm NIKKOR VR Lens:
First off, I mainly use this camera for pictures of my 6-month old son (family pictures and such), and outdoors/nature/landscapes while hiking on the Virginia Creeper Trail.
This is my first DSLR, and it is incredibly easy to use. Between the "Guide" mode, the DVD how-to, and the Nikon iPhone app, I have been able to figure out just about anything that I want to do in manual mode, while the various pre-programmed settings are self explanatory.
I really cannot find anything negative about the camera to write about! The only possible complaint I might have is the resolution on the LCD screen, which is a tad blurry if you zoom in.

This camera is easy to use and takes amazing pictures. The easy set-up instructions got us snapping quality pictures within minutes of receiving the box. The menu is clear and easy to understand. Our favorite though is the AF 18 - 55mm lens; this lens lets us frame our subjects with great ease and clarity. We are very happy with this camera; a dramatic improvement over our point-and-shoot digital cameras. All in all, a great camera for a great price.

Comments about Nikon D3100 Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm NIKKOR VR Lens:
I did a lot of research before I purchased this. I spoke with amateur and professional photographers from both the Cannon and the Nikon camps. In the end I chose the Nikon D3100 over the Cannon T2i because the Nikon has a bigger (and in this case better) sensor. What I had read about the compression technologies on the T2i discouraged me from choosing that.
This was purchased as a gift for Christmas, we set it up so my wife could start shooting right out of the box. The cameras ability to focus in low light is incredible. The body is light and easy to hold. The buttons, menus etc are fairly intuitive. For the price, this is a great bigginers DSLR.
The following is what really impressed me about B&H... I initially bought this from another store because I was able to get a good discount, however they oversold online and told me 3 days before Christmas that it was on backorder. My father in law told me to use B&H in the first place, but I had ignored that very good advise. So I went to B&H.com and saw that they were offering free next day delivery. The camera arrived in time Christmas, the wife was thrilled with her surprise, and B&H saved my bacon.
To anyone comparing this to the T2i; if video is really important to you, then you may well consider the Cannon, but on all other fronts the D3100 is a better camera.
B&Hs service was fantastic, I shall be using them for all camera related purchases in the future.

Comments about Nikon D3100 Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm NIKKOR VR Lens:
I really liked this camera, but found it heavy and difficult to hold, and so returned it. However, I have arthritis in my hand, and can't entirely blame the camera. I will say I compared pictures taken with it to the same shot from a Canon T3, which was easier for me to grip and hold, although it weights only about a half ounce less. (The weight of the camera is more distributed in the Canon). I found the Nikon pictures to have better color and clarity definition over the Canon. The Nikon is easy to use and lets the user grow in their photography skills, offering great pictures on both auto-focus and manual settings. I'd recommend this camera to both beginners and more advanced users.

I have used a Nikon D70 since 2004. Wonderful camera, but always felt like I needed to tweak the photos, boost the color, add more contrast, or increase the exposure. The D3100 requires none of that. Pictures are perfect everytime. Smooth, clear, contrasty, warm, and the colors just pop. I know I am no better taking photos. I think Nikon has just really dialed in the technology. Great camera.

DX-Nikkor lenses are engineered and optimized for use on Nikon DX-format D-SLRs and are designed to cover the smaller image area of the DX sensor. When a DX lens is mounted on an FX-format Nikon D-SLR, the camera's DX-Crop Mode is automatically engaged, introducing a 1.5x magnification (cropping) factor.
