If you like to live on the edge, this Sony Alpha DSLR-SLT-A55 Digital Camera (Body Only) will take you to the leading edge of DSLR technology, with the first-ever translucent mirror design. For the first time, a high-resolution live image preview with rapid, accurate phase detection autofocus is available at all times--via the LCD or the electronic viewfinder. This means that even moving objects stay in sharp focus at all times, whether you're shooting full HD video or stills.
That's not all the A55 has to offer, though. It's got 16.2MP of high resolution captured on an APS-C size HD CMOS image sensor, built-in GPS that records the location and time of every shot you take and lets you view your images on a map (with compatible computer and Internet applications), an incredibly sharp, bright 3" tiltable LCD screen with 921,000 dots, built-in flash, full HD 1080/60i video, a fabulous 3D panorama mode that combines 3 pictures into a 3D image, and up to 10 frames per second continuous shooting.
With the image stabilization, Hand-held Night Shot mode, Multi-frame NR mode (which takes 6 photos in rapid succession and uses the best data from each to create 1 stunning picture), and sensitivity up to ISO 25600, you won't ever have to miss a picture due to darkness again.
Face Detection recognizes faces and optimizes exposure and focus for them, Smile Shutter takes the picture only when it detects the subject smiling. There's also an automatic HDR mode which take 3 photos of a high-contrast situation, and melds the highlight, shadow and mid-tone data together to create 1 optimal photo. Of course the A55 also has creative modes such as Standard, Vivid, Portrait, Landscape, Sunset, B/W (Contrast, Saturation, Sharpness adjustable in +/-3 steps), Macro, Sports Action, Night Portrait, and many more.

Interesting technology and feature. I was waiting for camera like this for very long time. And Sony finally made one for me. I will be using it ~ 90% for HD Video and 10% creative still pics. To compliment camera I got body only and Sony SAL-DT180250/3.5-6. Turns out to be great match! Now I need a 50mm/1.4 to cover low light conditions. And I'm all for quite long time. I set it to 16x9 size and to highest HD quality /AVCHD. And main use it to watch my pics/video on my 50" 1080 HDTV (16x9). Or, on the computer... I'm not printing 4x6 or even bigger pictures - this will be ridiculous anachronism. When I put together nice HD movie (report from my Hawaiian vacation), I make AVCH HD video and burn it on regular DVD. This disk is playable on Blue Ray player (standalone, or BR Drive in computer's). This is cheap way to share HD video in best quality. For stills, I just making data disk. Some complaining about camera overheating after 3-9 min of continuous use - of course! Sensor is huge - almost full frame. My 1/4" CX100 HD camcorder gets hot after 5 min of continuous use. And A55 is not a webcam and not a fully dedicated HD camcorder. You must understand what you are buying (or talking about). I think, that any person in right mind ,who buying this type of camera is perfectly understanding all advantages and getting it for creating home made HD video on level of creativity and QUALITY higher than an average $500 HD camcorder... And anyone who was at least read something about how home video should be done - will NEVER make video clips 3 min long. Golden rule of video, is to keep clips short, 3-5 sec expositions and up to 1 min in cases when you need to trace/follow something. Searching vimeo and youtube before buying this camera I saw horrible samples, some people can't even hold or point camera... Sad. I saw only one sample which is simply exemplary - see [@]. Now, THAT's how you need to use A55! (again - 16007274)A55 PRO's: - Great sensor (same size as in A33, just Sony squeezed more pixels in it)- Compact size.- Great AUTO+ mode- Great A/S/P modes and HDR feature.- In body Image Stabilization (basic, but works well)- Lens AF/Manual button on body.- Huge 3" AND 16x9 display - FINALLY!!! I'm already sick of these puny 4x3 displays. A55 CON's: - LOUD CLICK recorded on video clip after you stopped filming video. This was directly inherited from NEX5 which was and is one of the weirdest Sony creations. It was a defect then and was NOT fixed here!!!! What you are thinking Sony dudes?- Microphones are sooo basic quality, pointing sideways instead of forward, and totally NOT insulated! Super sloppy job, Sony. I will have to get external anyway - to get decent sound... but still!- "Fn" button should be moved somewhere else, basically it always is too close to the thumb rest. - LCD is folding ... down. This is not being creative, this is ridiculous, Sony. Many Facebook, Space book, My Face and egocentric members of other social networks will be not happy with this design. Because it will be quite difficult for them to take picture or video of themselves... :) I find it useful, only when LCD is not in the use, I can flip it backwards to protect screen. Strange, but looks like nothing prevents you to make LCD opening to the left side... I'm still VERY happy with the "rest" of the camera, just have to live with these "birthdefects". But because of them - 4 stars, Sony, for otherwise great camera.A55 (A33) is in the same "class" as Canon T2i and Canon 60D, just in my opinion, much more refined, simply better.

I have owned a few Sony cameras over the years. Started with a Sony 505,707, and finally the Sony Alpha a100 and have been very happy with them all except this SLT-A55.
While the SLT-A55 does take nice pictures and the features are great compared to a100, it appears the SLT-A55 has some issues with long exposures.
When shooting the camera in Auto or "normal" shooting situations it works great. This is not the most common shooting I do.
My main shooting is macro photography. This is where the camera let me down, twice. The first camera displayed camera error after almost every shot I took in manual mode with long exposures and high f-stops. The camera was replaced with a new one. While the second camera displayed the camera error far less than the first one, it still happens.
It appears that there is a design flaw with this camera.
Instead of trying a third time to see if I get one that works properly, I have requested a refund.... Sony you let me down.
I'll just have to continue shooting the old reliable a100.
A few other notes:
For a camera with a translucent mirror, what is all that clunking when you take a picture?
Liked the live view, wish the a100 had it. I believe the 505 had it, and the 707 did.
Like the ability to zoom into a section of the picture for precise focusing for macros, very useful.
GPS feature was going to very nice to remember where pictures were taken.
Did not get to play with the video ability of the camera.

Comments about Sony Alpha DSLR-SLT-A55 Digital Camera:
I purchased this camera for travel photos and liked it but Sony wants almost $300 for repairs just out of warranty. My earliest A100 lasted 6 years before the shutter malfunctioned and my A700, A900, 2nd A100 and A33 are still performing.I have questions about the robustness of the new technology as the A33 consistently overheats as well. I've wanted the A77 but now am reconsidering [*] At any rate, the camera was so much fun that I had my brother purchase it with the 18-250 package for my niece as I enjoyed the Tamron version, howeverif one needs to spend ~ half its cost in repairs after a year, it is no bargain and Sony was not the least bit apologetic about this. So, nice performer as the mags say but can't be relied upon as can the older tech.

Comments about Sony Alpha DSLR-SLT-A55 Digital Camera:
I've had a Sony A-100 for 5 years and purchased the A-55 as an upgrade. I took both cameras into the deep woods of Colorado for fall colors and wow, I was not disappointed. I did not intend to use the A-55 as the main camera (I've only had it a few days), but after using it a little I was hooked and put away the A-100. Images were great with fantastic color even when shooting w/o tripod. Adjustment to the harsh light after a snow storm was amazing. Low light capture did not appear as good as the A-100 in the Auto mode, but I believe the photographer needs to work on that. Love the LED screen and the freedom it gives the photographer. The in-camera level indicator is a great plus. Yes the batteries don't last as long as one might expect, but they are not expensive so get a few extra for the bag. All in all a great camera, and great bang for for the buck. Looking forward to using the video feature and learning more about the camera itself.

I use the camera for landscapes, shots of "the moment", animal pictures such as in horseback archery, people doing something.
While the camera can do so many things, it is a well ordered instrument that makes its features accessible without a doubt.
Don't know yet what I disagree with with respect to its operation. I hear that the battery power does not last that long. May be this is because the camera can do so many acrobatics. A spare battery will do.

form a small and lightweight camera, but the extraordinary results, beyond the capacity of other DSLR cameras, it uses a new brain, with a translucent mirror, so to speed in no doubt, the results are crazy, especially with large aperture lenses, try to f2.8, f2, f1.2, f0.95, bokeh is crazy, even in low light conditions the results are still bright, very mild one, particularly when hunting, not too heavy when paired with a 70-200 f2.8

The camera is really nice, provides excellent images, light and handful. I'm missing optical viewfinder, but it's still one of the best choices for casual photographers.I would recommend to buy Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 lens ([@]) instead of the kit one.

I bought the A55 to replace my A100K. The camera is great! I used it under the lights for football with the 70-300mm lense until the lights came on then switched to the Sigma 70-200mm. I could not be more pleased with my purchase.

Comments about Sony Alpha DSLR-SLT-A55 Digital Camera:
There are so many things I do like about this camera. I have owned many many Sonys from the A100 up. I chose the A55 because of the quality and the size it projected.
But, the battery life really is poor compared to the A100, A700 etc.
I shoot HDR but choose post production software not in camera HDR. The A55 only offers 3 exposures not 5 like the A700 does. This is a let down for me. I should have done more of my homework on my part but I did take the word of the salespeople who were ill-informed. Sorry guys you got it wrong!
The swivel viewer is a real plus.
It is a much lighter camera.
I don't seem to have nay low light problems as others have had.
As far as the video... I probably will never use it. I would have liked to have seen more options in the camera instead video such as a better battery or auto bracketing of 5 exposures.
Why GPS? That's in my smart phone.

This is a great camera.
You can set it to auto, hand it to a stranger, and get a memory photo of yourself with confidence.
The continuous advance mode is great for sports photography.
The panorama mode gives me a completed photo that I formerly had to compose in PhotoShop.
HD videos come in handy on vacation, to capyure the "feel" of the place.
I like the articulating screen, which allows storage with the screen facing the camera body, and protected.

This is my first SLR camera. Make great pictures and video.
This camera lens I bought a Sony 35 01/08 DT.
Pictures are better than the Canon 550D.
Without a moment regretted my choice.
Oh yes, it really is very fast. Focuses instantly, 10 frames per second.
When focusing manually, when an object enters the focus on the screen lights up a green square, very helpful when shooting handheld video.

Comments about Sony Alpha DSLR-SLT-A55 Digital Camera:
Sony has been taking a very different path from Canon and Nikon. In some ways, it's annoying; for example, various simple user parameter adjustments and customization options are missing from the Sony A55. However, Sony has some unique tech, such as hand-held HDR using multi-shot alignment, and both the NEX and SLT models simply do things no CaNikon can.
I use both the EVF and pivoting rear screen on my A55. The better-than-optical EVF allows bracing of the camera against one's face and is easier to view in sunlight and more discrete in darkness. I find the pivoting rear screen most useful with ultra-wide lenses and the camera positioned where I couldn't see the EVF -- or when shooting video.
All my old Sony/Minolta AF mount lenses work, including my Sigma 10-20mm that is supposed to have problems with the A55. Focus is uniformly fast and accurate even during movie capture, although it sometimes chooses unwisely what to focus on. Adapted manual-focus lenses work great with "shoot without lens" enabled and magnified view: A mode and even multi-shot work.
JPEG images are very clean, but a little flat -- probably due to Sony mapping a wider dynamic range, especially in DRO or HDR. They PP well. I have yet to find any ghosting from the "translucent" mirror, and I've been looking. In fact, the only IQ defect I've seen is a slight color balance shift between images in a sequence, and it's not really an issue.
Problems? Only one: the sensor overheats in video capture very quickly. Does not damage the camera, but sometimes stops capture in as little as 5 minutes.
Conclusion: this is a viable substitute for an HD camcorder, but it really shines as an example of what DSLRs should evolve into.
