Bought this camera as my first upgrade to a DSLR. Bottom line, I love this camera. It is surprising very easy to use with great features. The size is also a huge advantage as its quite smaller than its competitors.

This is a great upgrade from my Alpha A100. It's lighter, and it fits my hand as well as or better than the A100, so it's comfortable in long sessions. I like the Live View LCD, and the auto-switching between the LCD and viewfinder. The image stabilization seems better than the A100's, and it's a lot faster for continuous shooting, thanks to not having a moving mirror. I also like the level indicators in the VF, since I have a tendency to tilt a camera.

The are a few minor cons. Images are somewhat noisy at high ISO, but all DSLRs are noisy to some degree unless you're willing to spend 4 or 5 times as much. Battery life is kind of short, but it's easy enough to carry an extra battery or two. Finally, I'm not a big menu fan, and the pop-up menu help is annoying, but aside from that the menus are livable.

Unless someone invents an affordable DSLR that reads my mind, never makes a bad exposure, and prepares my breakfast, I doubt I'll ever want another SLR.

I upgraded from the a100 and I've been using my a33 mostly for photographing sports with a Tamron 70-200 f2.8 lens. The pictures have been beautiful and the auto-focus has been incredibly fast. I couldn't be more pleased with it. The only downside has been overheating. Even with the Steady-shot turned off it overheats rather quickly even in 70 degree temps and I have to turn it off and back on again. All things considered, I love this camera!

I use it in low light with Minolta 50/1,4, where my A300 is already useless. It is a miracle that I can shoot at ISO 6400 and are not afraid of noises. Yes, they certainly are, but are easy to remove in the converter. At ISO 100-1000 the image is very clean and the colours are beautifull. I thought that 14 megapixels is a lot for this camera. The picture is not as sharp as with the A300. But after resizing to the same size I think the difference is not noticeable.
EVF - a wonderful invention, I have a lot of lenses with manual focus, which, without such a bright viewfinder in any light, focus is almost impossible. Very convenient that you can increase the viewfinder image for accurate sighting of focus, which certainly help in macro (as well as button of depth of field preview). Also in the EVF shows a lot of useful information, there is an electronic level.
The camera has many automatic modes to help beginners to shoot panoramas and images with high dynamic range. Unfortunately they are useless when shooting in raw.
The camera is very small and lightweight, which is good when you carry it, but bad at shooting. My hand is tired quickly to keep such a small camera. It has a different grip, which very inconvenient. The handle is less than the A300.
The autofocus is fast enough and accurate. In my opinion, built-in stabilizer is now much better than it was in the A300.
Rotate the screen is not very comfortable. I forget where to twist and afraid to break it. The turning mechanism does not seem reliable.
Live View can not be turned off. You can simply turn off the display. For me, it would be nice if the screen could display large icons of shooting settings.
Battery is very weak, you should buy one more with your camera.
Too few buttons on the body. Now even the stabilizer is turned on/off in the menu.
In any case, it would be a good purchase for the money!

This camera takes GREAT pictures, but there are some limitations. The battery life could be better. I do love how accurate the battery % is though - very accurate. I'm a little upset that my batteries from my older Sony Alpha don't work in this newer A33. The movie clip length is even shorter than is listed under just about any normal conditions I've used it under. Maybe 6 to 10 minutes before the sensor starts to overheat. Also, not having 24p is a drawback. The footage does look nice though. You can't beat 7 FPS still shots in a camera at this price, and the panorama is a fun toy to play with. Overall, a very good camera for the price. It doesn't do everything I had hoped, but I'm certainly not upset with the purchase.

Unlike other reviews, the battery life is very good for my daily life (although I already have another backup battery because of the reviewers' suggestion). But indeed, the High ISO noise is a problem in certain situation and I need to get a faster lens.

I purchased this on reading rave reveiws about the SLT technology/product, but was a bit disappointed about the build quality, the product looks too plasticky, and the looks and feel of a cheap product, note I own a SONY A550 too , in comparison the build quality is too bad. Other than the buld quality this product is good...
Its easy to use with excellent image quality, image stabilization and even indications in the view finder to avoid taking skewed pictures..

I got the A33 (with the Zeiss-labeled 16-80mm) as a replacement/upgrade for my old Sony DSC-R1 which has produced excellent results since I first picked it up in 2006. Overall this upgrade is successful and I have enjoyed the fast focus, better ISO performance, and great live-viewfinder of the newer model.

Over three months and thousands of exposures, I've come to the following cautions/suggestions on the A33:

* The 1/FL shutter speed algorithm used in the P and A exposure mode is overly conservative given the great shake-reduction performance of this camera. This leads to premature boosting of the ISO up to 6400 where noise/detail suffers. I work around this by using the S exposure mode a lot.

* No program shift - I believe this is an outcome of the 1/FL shutter speed algorithm but on the other hand Sony could have just overlaid a program shift on top. This omission also forces using S exposure mode to get emulate program shift. This is first auto-exposure camera I've purchased in 20 years that lacks program shift!

* The JPEGs generated by the A33 are pretty mediocre with a digital look. I've had to go to 100% RAW processing (using Photoshop ACR) to achieve the artistic and technical values that the sensor is capable of. This is in sharp constrast to the old Sony DSC-R1 whose JPEGs were so good that I gave up trying to get better images with ACR.

* There is no camera controlled focus lock, just an exposure lock. To emulate focus lock I first frame the subject and lock the exposure, move the camera to align the active focus sensor then refocus, and finally move the camera back to the original frame and shoot. Pretty fiddly for something that's one button on most cameras.

* Sony compensated for lack of moving mirror by giving the shutter blades an enormous clack-clack. Seems louder than moving mirrors on many other cameras. You can feel the movement and it requires a heavy tripod with solid head if you want to avoid "shutter shake" in time exposures.

But overall, with some TLC the Sony SLT-A33 gives great results in a light, compact package.

I use this camera like a dslr and like a video camera. Both skills are good, but the video mode is great. This product doesn't contain manual mode under video mode, but you can by-pass this. It has exposure lock and exposure compensation, what you can use like a manual mode. One thing you cannot modify under video mode: shutter time.
Good thing: the camera use gain (iso) and shutter time continously, not discrete value. If you move the field of view from dark to light, the result will be nice gradient.
Great camera, great price.

I was sad to leave my 35mm camera behind, but I am enjoying the all the benefits of digital with my new Sony Alpha33. I enjoy shooting family portraits, vacations, high school sports, sunrises, and landscapes.

Taking still life and insect photos are my thing. However, I shot an HD video and the quality was amazing. Taking a panoramic 3d picture was hard but once I set the image to a normal size the pictures came out well. overall I feel that this camera will prove to be very enjoyable and productive.
