If you like to live on the edge, this Sony Alpha DSLR-SLT-A33 Digital Camera W/18-55mm Lens will take you to the leading edge of DSLR technology, with the first-ever translucent mirror design. For the first time, a high-resolution live image preview with rapid, accurate phase detection autofocus is available at all times--via the LCD or the electronic viewfinder. This means that even moving objects stay in sharp focus at all times, whether you're shooting full HD video or stills.
That's not all the A33 has to offer, though. It's got 14.2MP of high resolution captured on an APS-C size HD CMOS image sensor, a 3x DT 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 (35mm equivalent 27-82.5mm) lens, an incredibly sharp, bright 3" tiltable LCD screen with 921,000 dots, built-in flash, full HD 1080/60i video, a fabulous 3D panorama mode that combines 3 pictures into a 3D image, and up to 7 frames per second continuous shooting.
With the image stabilization, Hand-held Night Shot mode, Multi-frame NR mode (which takes 6 photos in rapid succession and uses the best data from each to create 1 stunning picture), and sensitivity up to ISO 25600, you won't ever have to miss a picture due to darkness again.
Face Detection recognizes faces and optimizes exposure and focus for them, Smile Shutter takes the picture only when it detects the subject smiling. There's also an automatic HDR mode which take 3 photos of a high-contrast situation, and melds the highlight, shadow and mid-tone data together to create 1 optimal photo. Of course the A33 also has creative modes such as Standard, Vivid, Portrait, Landscape, Sunset, B/W (Contrast, Saturation, Sharpness adjustable in +/-3 steps), Macro, Sports Action, Night Portrait, and many more.

With the Sony SLT-a33's new translucent mirror technology, I have been able to capture amazing shots. The 14 megapixel pictures look amazing and you can crop and zoom without losing large amounts of detail. The 7 fps is outstanding, the camera closest in price that can take 7 frames per second is $1800, Nikon d300, for just the body. And don't even get me started on the 1080i video. It's so crisp and the auto-focus is ridiculously snappy. The ONLY downside I've found is: on my Mac, the AVCHD files are not very Mac-friendly. But other than that, this camera is worth every last penny.

We've owned Minolta cameras in the past and were really excited to receive and use the camera based on all the glowing reviews. Unfortunately, for shooting video this camera is horrible. The camera will overheat after about 3-10 minutes of continuous shooting. On our last shoot we had to put ice packs on the camera to keep the camera from overheating. We called Sony and found out that the camera is naturally overheats during continuous shooting. Heck, it is even in the manual - it warns that you may not be able to shoot long without the camera overheating. What a bunch of garbage. We shoot a lot of video that is longer than 10 minutes. While the camera has many cool features and, at first blush, is a great buy - the reality is that Sony just dropped a huge bomb. This camera horrible for shooting video unless you can do it in less than 3 minutes. I'm returning the camera as soon as I get back from an out-of-town shoot that this camera ruined and buying another competitor.

My old Canon Rebel XT 350D stopped working the other day. After doing the research, I purchased the A33. I couldn't be happier. It puts the power of a professional in the hands of an amatuer. The frames per second amaze me. I'm used to 3 fps, lol.

My local independent camera/photo store told me that Sony bought Minolta and that their DSLR wouyld accept the Minolta lens that I had purchaed for my 40+ year old Minotla 7000 35mm SLR!
I have been using a couple of Canon point and shoot digitals and was ready to upgrade to and DSLR.
The Sony Alpha DSLR=SLT-A33 has allowed me to use the lenses that I am familar with, in an easy to use format!
I have taken some great phots and the learning curve was very low.
The other feature that I appreciate is the hot shoe for my more powerful flash.

THIS IS A GREAT CAMERA...A WORD TO THE WISE, IF YOU WANT A VIDEO CAMERA, THAN BUY ONE. FOR A ANYONE WHO PURCHASES A DSLR BY ANY MFG TO HAVE A VIDEO INCLUDED IS NUTS. ALL DSLR'S THAT RECORD VIDEO ARE AWKWARD AND CLUMSY AND DOWN RIGHT UNCOMFORTABLE TO SHOOT VIDEO. I PERSONALLY UPSET ABOUT SPENDING MONEY FOR A FEATURE ON A CAMERA THAT I AM NEVER GOING TO USE!...BATTERY LIFE ON ALL MY SONY PRODUCTS IS UN ACCEPTABLE, PRODUCTS ARE GREAT, BATTERY LIFE, NO GOOD. SONY PRODUCTS ARE BATTERY EATERS.....

My wife and I use A-33 to capture our kids' activities. The shutter speed is amazing for a camera at this budget; we're now able to get much clearer pictures on our kids swimming, bike riding and other activities. Although the body is a bit awkward to hold for a long period, it's still a great camera for family like ours.

This camera has alot of great options and abilities. It does feel alot lighter and cheaper than the previous versions but I can tell you it is one strong and powerful camera. I bought a Class 10 16gig SDHC memory card and this thing can really pump out some shots at 7 per second! Not to mention the awesome viewfinder layout. I am in love to this camera, my wife is so frustrated because give the camera more attention then I do her!

Comments about Sony Alpha DSLR-SLT-A33 Digital Camera W/18-55mm Lens:
I have used this as much for its video capability as for its superb photo-quality. The auto-focus during video use is excellent. It does produce noise during video recording which is audible during playback, but if using an external digital recorder for recording audio together with this camera, the results will be excellent.
Switching between shooting and playback mode is challenging and not convenient. Otherwise, a fine piece of gear.

Comments about Sony Alpha DSLR-SLT-A33 Digital Camera W/18-55mm Lens:
The camera has excellent colour quality and the kit lens clarity is awesome. However, I think the photos lack a little of that "SLR-look", some of them. Excellent image detail though, fantastic low-noise performance, easy to use menu's with helps/guides.
The lcd is simply FANTASTIC, and the EVF is better than anything else on the market, and almost produces life-like images.

Comments about Sony Alpha DSLR-SLT-A33 Digital Camera W/18-55mm Lens:
I bought this as a back-up for my Sony DSLR SLT-A55 and to my surprise, it is almost the same camera. Very basic differences are : no GPS, shoot speed down from 10 fps to a mere 7 fps! Otherwise the same new translucent mirror technology. The only problem I have seen is an overheat error notice when I was out shooting a lot in the hot Florida sun! And the HD video is beyond compare!

The camera is lightweight and travels easily. I am not a photogropher but I am beginnig to feel like one. Some of the shots I have taken in just the first week are among the best in my life.
As others have said, the camera is especially great in low light situations, even backlit shots come out great.
I have nothing bad to say about the camera so far.

the camera is great, you can start to shoot right off the box. It feels like it's a serious cam but not that bulky which is really cool for your shoulders and back when you need to carry it a long time.
The quality of the viewfinder is really nice and all the information are really viewable .Great thing that when you aim with the viewfinder the screen shut off and when you're done shooting with the viewf, the screen comes on automatically.
Don't forget to take a spare battery though .
Overall a great camera so, a must have for serious hobbyist .

Comments about Sony Alpha DSLR-SLT-A33 Digital Camera W/18-55mm Lens:
This is my first foray into the world of Digital Cameras and advanced photography. Previously I had only owned a snapshot camera. After a LOT of research I decided on the a33 over a Canon or Nikon due to the translucent mirror design. You have to read about it yourself to truly appreciate what it is capable of! I felt that this feature was very important because I'm a beginner and plan to use Auto Focus frequently. I have to say that this camera, while offering many more options than anything I've owned, is quite easy to use! I've always found Sony products to be intuitively designed and easy to learn and an exceptional bang for my buck. I look forward to learning how to use all the amazing features available on this camera!
