The Pentax K-r Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm Zoom Lens (Black) is that lightweight, mid-range 12.4MP digital SLR camera with a 3x zoom lens that also shoots dazzling 720p HD video that you've been looking for.
It's got a few other things going for it, too--like a high resolution 3" LCD display with 930,000 dots, up to 6 frames per second shooting speed, super-accurate 11-point autofocus system, sensitivity up to 25,600 ISO so you never miss a photo due to low light, shutter speeds up to 1/6000 second to freeze the action, and dual power options, either rechargeable Li-ion or easy-to-find AA batteries. The 18-55mm lens provides very wide-angle to normal views that will cover a surprisingly wide range of photo opportunities.
Wait! That's not all: the K-r has an efficient dust removal mechanism that automatically shakes dust off the CMOS sensor, a custom image function for applying one of nine creative modes (such as Bleach Bypass, a dramatic effect used in movies) to any particular image you wish, a digital filter function with a choice of 18 filters to process images without a computer (including Starburst, Sketch, High Contrast, Fisheye, Toy Camera, Posterization, Retro, etc.), an upgraded HDR (High Dynamic Range) function to create a superb image in difficult lighting situations (by combining 3 different exposures of the same scene) even when not using a tripod, and 3 different cross processing options to create dramatically different colors. It even has a high-speed infrared data transmission system--the first in a Pentax camera.

Definitely not a super high-end camera, but it is still well made and has excellent image quality. The only major issue I had is that it DOES NOT HAVE WIRED SHUTTER REMOTE CAPABILITY. It is compatible with a wireless IR remote aimed toward the front of the camera, but does not have RF remote capability or a jack for a wired remote. There is an optional 2s delay on the shutter release to elimintate vibration with long exposures if the exact timing isn't important. The autofocus seems to be fast and accurate under most conditions (with the included DAL 18-55mm AF lens). The viewfinder (penta-mirror, not penta-prizm) is ok for general use, but could be a little brighter for easy use if manually focusing in extremely low-light conditions. Also, under some brighter lighting conditions, the viewfinder seems to show a slightly grainy texture, although it does not interfere with determining whether the subject is in focus. The exposure information display in the viewfinder is a little too dim to be easily read under extremely bright lighting. I have not used the Liveview enough to rate its performance. Image noise starts to appear over ISO 1600, (somewhere between 800 and 1600 if you look closely), but it doesn't seem any worse than similar-range cameras I've seen. The built-in flash seems to work well, even in extremely dark conditions but I haven't used it enough to compare the accuracy of the exposure compensation. It will not allow shutter speeds over 1/180s when using the built-in flash. The navigational buttons are a small and although ok for menu navigation, are occasionally inconvenient for second functions, such as sensitivity value and drive mode. Camera-specific accessories, such as the 4 AA battery adaptor, seem to be relatively expensive.
Works well with older A-type lenses. All exposure modes work as long the aperature ring is set to "A" (if you are manually setting the aperature value, it can be set through the camera). Also works with manual-aperature lenses in Manual and Aperature-Priority modes, although the optical (or possibly digital) preview function is needed to show the exposure metering in Manual mode. I haven't noticed any problems or had any errors using Aperature Priority mode with manual lenses. The in-camera shake-reduction seems to work ok, even with manual lenses (when using an older lens, a prompt comes up to enter the approximate focal length every time the camera is turned on when shake-reduction is enabled). So far,I've had the camera approximately 2 months without any problems, with the only major issue being that it does not have a jack for a wired shutter remote.

Comments about Pentax K-r Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm Zoom Lens (Black):
Bought this camera in september. It is my first ever digital camera. With the kit lens taking photo's is a snap. And just like a little kid every picture I take I must look at. Which brings me to the only thing I don't like..... Battery life. Use all the new features, auto-focus, built in flash, anti shake, etc. and you will be recharging the battery frequently.
As for the old..... older lenses, with limitations, work well with this camera. Just as the description stated. I use the camera to shoot macro and floral mostly.
Haven't tried the video as yet.
Read the instruction manual before you jump in, it will definitely save you from a headache.

i love my new Pentax Kr! i love to take photos of my family and friends, landscaping, nature and anything else I can think of or that catches my eye! I am still learning about my new camera but so far everything that I have used has worked out great and my photos look beautiful! I have noticed that some are not always in focus, not sure if it is something I am not doing right or the camera yet but time will tell! So far very happy...

It is a well-built camera, giving an impression of solidity, despite the plastic body. The viewfinder is somewhat dark and the information are slightly obscured. The LCD monitors is perfect. The quality of the photos is very good and the general controls easy to understand and to set. A good quality/price ratio.

I will be travelling to Portugal shortly and I wanted to be sure to take great pics. According to Consumer Reports the K-r is a great DSLR. I have not been disappointed. It takes great shots and has many different programs that I am getting used to yet.
I haven't found anything bad yet, too soon. Although the video is 720p instead of the 1080p like the Nikon 3100D.

Comments about Pentax K-r Digital SLR Camera with 18-55mm Zoom Lens (Black):
Further to my earlier post the following clarification was received from Pentax today -
" The D-BC109 is a dual voltage charger (100-240v), meaning that it is universal.
The charger indicates 3 different certifications. Under the JET (Japan) and CET (European) certification marks, the specifications list 100-240v (indicating the possible range that can be experienced in this region).
The C UL US certification lists 120v/60hz, meaning that in the U.S., the input is 120v. The power cord provides 7a 125v, however because the charger is dual voltage, it is able to regulate the current within the 100-240v range. The only thing you need to use this charger in the UK is a physical adapter. You do not need to use a transformer, as the charger is dual voltage."
So this sets the record straight and I thank Pentax for taking the trouble to do so.

So many features in this entry level dslr and for such a good price. built in intervalmeter, amazing range of iso, super fast 6fps continuous shooting, hd video, multiple hdr modes. I love this camera and still feel I have not used all of it's available features. Plus the fact that you can use any pentax lens made is awesome.
