For the professional, a 16-28mm f/2.8 lens is almost a necessity, and this new AT-X 16-28mm F2.8 Pro FX Lens for Nikon from Tokina fills the bill very nicely. Designed specifically for Nikon pro level DSLRs with a full frame (FX) sensor (such as the Nikon D700 and D3x), this super wide-angle zoom has 15 elements in 13 groups, using aspherical and SD super-low dispersion glass elements to reduce chromatic aberration and give maximum resolution. The silent DC motor allows the lens to focus quickly and quietly and works with a GMR magnetic AF sensor to increase AF speed even more.
An exclusive One-Touch Focus Clutch mechanism allows switching quickly between auto focus and manual focus by snapping the focus ring forward for AF and back toward the camera for manual focus. And, it's possible to buy this lens without applying for a mortgage first.

I've been a longtime fan of Tokina wide angle lenses, as I've used their 11-16mm f2.8 for quite awhile for a Nikon D90, so I had complete confidence and no hesitation in ordering this lens for my D3S. Especially considering how much cheaper it is than the Nikkor 14-24mm. I used this lens primarily for various types of landscapes, using HDR, long exposures, or single exposures.
The great thing about this is how much of the scene that fits into the frame. I'm able to get things into frame that I didn't think I could get. The lens distortion is incredibly minimal which helps keep things on the straight. It also handles low light situation very well. Of course the body I use also helps, but the capability of this lens in low light is a perfect compliment. It also handles chromatic aberrations quite well, almost none at all. And of course, the price point is significantly lower than that of the Nikkor equivalent. Cheaper, but just as good a lens with the same quality build. And the ability to switch from AF to MF is quick and easy. I have this lens attached almost all of the time.
The lens itself is just a bit long, but it's really no big deal at all. Just a personal observation. Other than that, no complaints at all.

I wanted to like this lens. I own a Tokina 12-24mm f4.0 that is one of the best lenses in my collection. Sharp, fast, robust, great IQ. That encouraged me to buy the Tokina 16-18mm f2.8. What a disappointment! The sample I received was unacceptable and I had to return it. I am not talking about pixel-peep, target-photographing lack of sharpness. I use lenses professionally. The Tokina lens I received was visibly unsharp, showing a lot of chromatic aberration even at low magnification. It shouldn't have passed quality control. After that, I searched the web and discovered that mine was not an isolated case. See below. Here is what Photozone.de says in their review of the Tokina 16-28mm: "As mentioned we purchased three lens samples for testing, two in Nikon and on in Canon mount, and all three showed some centering issues. The initial Nikon variant was so poor that we had to cancel the testing procedure." http://www.photozone.de/nikon_ff/594-tokina162828ff?start=2I hate the idea of buying two or three samples of a lens to keep one. We all lose with it - users and dealers. I wish I could say that is a problem with third-party lenses but last year I bought a Nikon 16-35 f.4.0 that was awful and had to be returned as well. Initially I dismissed this problem as message-board lore but now I know it is real. Lens manufacturers need to improve their quality control.

Comments about Tokina AT-X 16-28mm F2.8 Pro FX Lens for Nikon:
I bought this lens primarily for working weddings. We have a lot of small groups in even smaller hotel rooms. Also have a lot of wedding groups in small churches.
Only used it at one wedding so far and I am very happy with the results.
This lens is nearly as Heavy as the Nikon 12-24 f2.8 and cannot use filters. Fortunately I don't need filters to works with people. The Nikon lens cost more than twice this lens.

Bought it to use with my Nikon D3x
Used to have the Nikon 14 24 , sold it and regret selling it , Bought the Zeiss 18 F3.5 and it wasn't as good as the other Zeiss lenses have , a bit of disappointment but didnt want to cash out for a new 14 24 Nikon. Bought the Tokina 16 28 after some reading. Have been using it for about a week now, streetshooting , nature and it is really GREAT , sharp corner to corner even wide open , I have been comparing it to my Nikon 14 24 photos and honestly I think its very close to that lens in both build quality and optical quality.
Today if I had neither the Nikon or the Tokina and a Plenty money, I would buy the Tokina bc I think its a much better value for money.

Comments about Tokina AT-X 16-28mm F2.8 Pro FX Lens for Nikon:
I absolutely love this lens. I've had it for about 3 months and I have very little to complain about. The overall image quality is every bit of what I've gotten from the competing Nikon 14-24mm. The build quality doesn't match the Nikon, but this is a better "bang for the buck" in a general sense.
Image quality is particularly good. Even wide open. I can get tack sharp images by f/4 with no significant loss of quality at f/2.8, though I wouldn't use this for large prints until at least f/5.6. On top of this it's fantastic until about f/16 which is usually diffraction limiting for many cameras anyway. Color rendition is good as well though not on par with the Nikon, but this is less than half the price.
On the downside, the front element of this lens is huge and thus virtually every light source will cause flare. Not an issue doing landscape work in the daytime, but I personally mostly work as an urban night photographer where background light sources are always an issue. It's even an issue just trying to get some nice sunset shots. Beyond this the only serious variable to consider is the weight. This thing is heavy, but not to such a point that it outclasses other FX format lenses of this variety. Either way, it's still something to consider.
Overall, this thing is positively fantastic for everything that doesn't run the risk of having direct light sources in or near the frame. IQ is beyond excellent, AF is decent, but just be aware of the flare and the weight.

Comments about Tokina AT-X 16-28mm F2.8 Pro FX Lens for Nikon:
Bought this lens a few weeks back. As I was comparing this lens to the Nikon equivalent lenses, I could not believe how sharp and fast this lens is. I'm glad I had the chance to compare to the Nikon 16-35 f/4, because I think this Tokina lens is better (faster and sharper). One thing I also noticed is the color temperature with this lens is a little cooler than the Nikon's which is not an issue for me. Also, some people complained about the lens flare. While there is some lens flare while shooting directly into the sun, you would get the same flare with any bulbous front lens especially at 16mm on a FF sensor. Overall, this is a durable, well built professional lens.

I leave this lens on my D700. I like the speed of the lens, it is quite and the glass is excellent. I use this for street photography, landscape and automotive close-ups. The only draw back is the lack of filter support. It is durable and with that come some extra weight. I would recommend this lens to a friend!

I owned an Nikkor 14-24mm F/2.8G, is one of the best UWA lens that i've used so far. Since my wife also into Photography and we always fight for the UWA lens, so i decided to get another UWA lens. Due to budget constraint, i decided to go for Tokina 16-28mm F/2.8 which i read all the reviews about it and at last when i got it, it did exactly what i'm expected!!! Perhaps it exceeded my expectation too for its price tag. IQ is amazing and built quality is not a question, is very durable! GREAT FX LENS FROM TOKINA!! Highly recommending this for budget user like me if you can afford the Nikkor 14-24mm F/2.8G yet. IQ is very closed (<=90%)- again comparing IQ vs Price ratio.

I am a part time sports photographer & had been wanting a lens that was wider than my 24-70. This lens is great for large team photos as well as fast action sports. I used the lens for indoor basketball & volleyball action shots. It focused quickly & the images were quite sharp. I use a Nikon D700 & it work very well together. So far I haven't encountered any problems, but I am sure it has it's limitations. The lens is heavy but I shoot mostly with a 70-200 so the weight doesn't bother me at all.

I had the opportunity to compare this lens to the Nikon lenses: 12-24, 2.8 and 16-35, 4. Although I'm missing the 35 mm range a bit, after a series of shots with those lenses I purchased the Tokina lens and I'm very very happy with it.
Superb build quality, amazing picture quality, cannot make out any real difference to the Nikon lenses on my D 700.
I even prefered the picture quality to the 12-24 lens. And when you hold it in your hand it makes no difference to the new Nikon lenses and seems like those to be build to hold for ages.
Go for it!! Good price for a superb product!

Why not 5, well, the Nikon 12-24 is still a better lens. But -- at double the price and a larger piece of glass on front -- liked this a bit more for purchase. Don't like the clutch focus but getting used to it. Nothing wrong with the focus, just hard to get used to the idea of using push/pull to adjust that versus flipping a switch. Otherwise, I went with Ken Rockwell's recommendation on this about the optics and have not been disappointed.

i give it five stars not because it is perfect, but it was very satisfied me by comparing the quality and the price. i used it on my D700, the
pictures come out are very sharp and colorful.
even through you can got some flare spots and ghosting on the image when you shot directly under
the bright sun. i will recomind to everyone who want a good wide angle lens and don't want pay over thousand dollers.

I use this product for wedding receptions that are indoors or in close quarters. I like the speed of focus. I like the solid feel. I like the fact that its half the price of the nikon.
Things that arent so great? it likes to lens flare if you give it a chance to. You have to be more careful with your strobes. Its also heavy. Not a problem until the dreaded 2 hours before the wedding is over lull. Then it becomes a boat anchor. Also, the lens cap is a joke. I'm expecting to lose it at any point.

Comments about Tokina AT-X 16-28mm F2.8 Pro FX Lens for Nikon:
I was looking to own a UWA lens not so much to shoot landscapes but more to get really close to the action and get that in-your-face perspective, that being side, I can say that this Tokina lens delivers on every count, landscapes or otherwise.I use this lens on D700 so naturally, one other lens I also considered is the legendary Nikkor 14-24 2.8. But at less than half the price, this Tokina looked too good to pass up, given that Nikkor also doesn't take circular filters (and I believe Tokina can be modified with DIY to fit Lee filters used for the Nikon), I took chance with this "still not very out there" lens (so little reviews can be found on the web) and all I can say is: get this one unless you absolutely need that extra 2mm of the Nikkor at the wider end and use the $1k+ saved toward another pro glass. Here's what I like:-Excellent center sharpness even wide open, stop down a little, this thing cuts like a knife.-Corner sharpness are very good stopped down to about f5.6, but still very usable below that.-Very good micro contrast in even lighting, as good as the Nikon 14-24.-Virtually undetectable distortion at 16mm end.-Very little CA present wide open (Tokina finally got their acts together on this one).-Build quality is excellent, big and comfortable to hold.Things I don't like so much:-Flare control could use improvement, shooting near bright sun on the frame edge, you get some pretty nasty flare spots and ghosting on the image (Nikon does a little bit better job on this).-The bulbous front element, not really a con but it is prone to accidents.-Micro contrast is somewhat flat when shooting with very strong sun light from the side. But really, none of the cons should stop you from getting this lens because even the Nikon 14-24 isn't flare proof and at [$], you just can't get better than this.
