I use my 1TB My Passport Essential to backup my desk top. Up until know I was backing up my documents to an 8GB flash memory stick.
It did the job but it took a great deal of time to erase the previous documents before I backed up the current documents. I discovered that if I did not erase the old information it would take way too long to complete the backup.
With the Passport Essential I can set what I want to back up (files or entire hard disk, and the just forget about it. It does the backups on the fly automatically.
I love this product and I plan on purchasing another one for my laptop.

Bought this disk to use as a backup storage of my laptop. As I plugged-in the disk it was installed itself and prompted me to install WD SmartWare for backup. Ok, why not? Let's try it... I installed this software and found it unusable for my goals. So, I uninstalled it and as long as I don't use it and wouldn't like unusable files at the root of the disk I removed its files from the disk and formatted the disk with their WD Quick Formatter tool. And the show began... From here:
- I can't use the disk on other computers because now it doesn't has drivers and doesn't recognize on other computers
- I downloaded so called "Disk image" from WD support site, but it provided as a ZIP file and can't be used as an image for recovery. Just copping of the deleted files isn't help - WD SmartWare application doesn't recognize the drive.
- There is no tool to remove protection password I set at the beginning whilst I remember my password and just want to cancel protection!!! The only way to remove it is to install WD SmartWare that I can't install due to the reason stated previously..
My verdict: headache, foolish, unpredictable design of the product letting the user to format the drive with unusable, unrecoverable, unsupported results!!! Just unbelievable that I'm dealing with Western Digital product!

I use Western Digital for work and this is my third drive of theirs (all different sizes). This one works as it should; I haven't had any issues. It's pretty small too.

Using for backup and multimedia library.
Pros / Good at: Storage capacity, Light weight and Compact to carry with you, Cost-Efficiency.
Cons / Not good: Noisy and Shaky when writing to HD, If it falls - it will break (unlike my other external HD which are much more durable). Short USB3 Cable. Only 5400 rpm while 7200 rpm should be available at similar price.
Good product but not the best.
Will recommend to my friends.

finally a USB hard drive that does not disconnect when bumped! 1Tb is great, i'm just waiting for larger. i use this to store photos. i also have another one as a backup drive. i've owned previous WD USB harddrives and this one is slightly bigger and heavier. didn't like how i had to install the mac software myself, but it was not difficult.

It has USB3 support but I used it to connect to my Mac with only USB2. The speed still seems to be faster than the other portable HDDs I bought before. It's also well constructed. But, no cover or soft box included for protection. This is the only thing I don't like, so far.

Comments about Western Digital 1TB My Passport Essential SE Portable Hard Drive (Black):
The WD My Passport has a low profile, light weight, and easily stores in my camera bag. The 1TB of storage is more than enough for the 'Road Warrior', and is easy to use. Your files are secure and password protected, even when you leave your PC or Laptop unattended for a period of time. I use the WD My Passport to store all images-originals, website, modified related to a specific project, freeing up the disk storage on my laptop and desktop.
