Top-end DSLRs aren't the only cameras that have the latest features: this Pentax K-r Camera Kit W/35mm Lens (Black), not only offers 12.4MP of resolution, a large 3" LCD display, a 53mm (equivalent) f/2.4 lens, a wide range of automatic programs + full manual control, and 720p HD video--it also has IrSimple infrared data transfer, which allows you to wirelessly transfer images between cameras, something you won't find in a high-end DSLR.
The K-r also has a highly responsive and accurate 11-point SAFOX autofocus system with a viewfinder focus point indicator that confirms the area of focus, a 6fps frame rate, a top shutter speed of 1/6000s, 100-25600 ISO range and a very effective sensor-shift shake reduction image stabilization system.
A wide range of in-camera processing and special effects filters (including a dazzling HDR function that can be used even without a tripod) gives you unprecedented creative options without going near a computer.
And all of these features are found in a camera body that's just 4.9 x 3.8 x 2.7" and weighs less than 20 oz. Plus, it runs on a single rechargeable Li-Ion battery or 4x AA batteries (with an optional battery holder).

Comments about Pentax K-r Camera Kit W/35mm Lens (Black):
I am an amateur photographer and this is my first digital SLR camera. While I have used the point and shoot cameras before, they never gave me exactly what I wanted.
The Pentax K-r camera has many options and features so there is a learning curve. However, once you have mastered the basics (about 10 minutes reading time and a little bit of playing) you will be amazed and happy with the results.
This camera has many advanced features that would appeal to even a professional photographer.
I am looking forward to using this camera and lens for many years to come.

Comments about Pentax K-r Camera Kit W/35mm Lens (Black):
Two days after getting this camera, I took it on a short trip in France. So far everything has worked great, and the image quality is perfect. This is my first DSLR, and I realise it will take more time than I thought to learn to use all its features. I had problems not with the camera itself, but with new parameters to take care of, such as depth of field (which can be very slim with the lens' huge aperture). But on those photos where I managed to get it right, the results are very impressive. Even in very low lighting, the pictures come out as if the subject was brightly lit! My advice to beginners like me: even though the automatic parameters and scene modes allow to take great pictures without much tinkering, you will need to put some time and effort into learning to use this camera to master it well.
