The Sigma DP1x Digital Camera is a compact digital camera with a secret weapon--a unique (among compact cameras) 14.06 megapixel Foveon X3 20.7 x 13.8mm direct image sensor that's 8 times the size of a sensor in a typical compact digital camera. Working in tandem with Sigma's unique True II image processing engine and a 16.6mm (28mm equivalent) f/4 lens, this super-sized sensor in a compact camera provides the same superb image quality as found in the Sigma SD14 professional SLR. With the DP1x, it is possible to record images in RAW or JPEG format in four resolution modes. Furthermore, it offers five exposure modes and three metering modes as well as being equipped with a built-in flash, hot shoe, and 2.5" TFT color LCD monitor.

Comments about Sigma DP1x Digital Camera:
If you believe in always carrying a camera so as to not miss an opportunity, this camera is compact, light weight & produces stunning, sharp images. Image quality is due to its APS-C Foveon sensor, which needs no anti-aliasing filter, and it's SLR specification prime lens. Beyond IQ, my favourite features are the "Quick Set" button which gives you dedicated buttons for fast control of eight top setup parameters, the live histogram paired with the wide dynamic range, RAW + JPEG & the macro lens detail.
Caveats: One nagging issue is shadow noise banding which some have identified as an issue with matrix math handling of the least significant bits - firmware fixable. Does not exist in B&W image. Sigma has impressively maintained a continuous improvement effort with this camera series. The Sigma external flash is excellent for indoor shooting.
No appreciable shutter lag but repeated shooting will create an image processing queue. A new feature postpones image processing to let you keep shooting.
Use a fast memory card (20+ MB/sec)as the Foveon sensor has no pixel interpolation & has more data to offload. A Bayer sensor is 50% green, 25% blue & 25% red with missing data interpolated after the image has been grabbed.
Batteries are small and can easily carry an extra two in a blue jean change pocket. About 200 shots each.

Comments about Sigma DP1x Digital Camera:
great camera but with no incorporate viewfinder.
If you want one, you need to pay more of $100, but it's not only that is not practical, beause every time "you see" something, you can't responde with the camera fast, because you need to put the viewfinder in place...

Comments about Sigma DP1x Digital Camera:
I owned DP-1 and just love it for image quality. So DP-1x seems to be a logical step forward. However the old camera's reliability wasn't that good and I would recommend buying some sort of insurance, ADP plan. You also need a good and fast memory card as shooting RAW is somewhat slow.
