This versatile Pentax 35mm DA L F2.4 AL Lens is considered a standard, normal focal length lens for the Pentax DSLRs it was designed for, but it's a great lens to own, even if you only have one lens. This 35mm lens (equivalent to 52.5mm in 35mm format) is ideal for family photos, portraits, landscapes and a lot more. The fast f2.4 maximum aperture helps you get pictures even in low-light situations, and it provides high-resolution images with edge-to-edge sharpness. An aspherical lens element helps to compensate for spherical aberration to maximize image quality, and PENTAX Super Protect (SP) coating helps repel dust, water, and grease--making the lens easier to clean.

Pentax did just about everything right designing this lens, and it performs wonderfully.
Just like a 50mm prime in the days of film, the 35mm DA L f2.4 AL on a cropped APS sensor DSLR is a good, all-around lens for many shooting situations. This lens will work well for landscapes, casual portraits, and street photography.
The lens is lightweight due to its mostly plastic construction, though in tune with other Pentax lenses it feels sturdy enough. The lens mount is plastic, and although this is not ideal, the lens is so light a metal mount is probably unnecessary.
The lens, with such diminutive size, is not intimidating like the DA* 16-50. Most importantly, however, the 35mm DA L F2.4 AL is pleasingly sharp when used wide open. Stopping down to F4 or F5.6 and it performs even better.
Perhaps the two major omissions from this lens are the lack of an included lens hood and a distance/aperture scale on the lens barrel. I can't imagine why the scales were not included; it would not have impacted price as there is already some printing on the lens barrel.
The lens is quite small, so adding mechanisms for attaching a lens hood might have been too tricky for Pentax engineers. Because I thought the hood was necessary, however, I will say that adding a metal Kalt 49mm screw-on lens hood and a Pentax 58mm pinch lens cap worked well for me. The lens hood screws on easily and does not vignette the image corners. The pinch cap allows the user to leave the lens and hood combined while protecting the glass. The pinch cap grips the grooves on the inside of the hood quite nicely.

Got this lens for my K100D to use in place of Sigma 17-50/2.8 EX for light traveling, hiking, and ski trips. I do not mind plastic mount and overall design of the lens. On the other hand it has strong chromatic aberrations and a serious backfocus in comparison to Sigma that required significant correction. It will work for intended purposes but I would not rely on it for demanding shooting.

I bought this lens with a Sigma 30mm f1.4. I only bought this lens as B&H was selling it discounted at the time of purchasing, so bought it out of curiosity. My Sigma had to be sent away to be calibrated, so played with this lens while i was waiting for my Sigma to return. I really love this lens, i have used the Sigma a few times since it return, but this is the lens i use. This lens is a little gem.

Comments about Pentax 35mm DA L F2.4 AL Lens:
Before I buy, I research. After reading what seemed like a couple hundred reviews, I weighed the positives with the negatives. The positives won out. So I decided to make the purchase because the price was right. I figured that if the lens produced mediocre results on my K5, I would later invest in the more expensive 35mm.
Well, I was quite impressed with the clarity and sharpness of the photos. I showed a few photos to friends and they were blown away. I haven't used the lens for portraits yet but I plan to.
If you need a fixed lens that produces great photos, this lens will do the job. This lens, for the price and the ease of use, is one of the best in my opinion.

This is a great lens! I was skeptical at first because it is a plastic lense but it is a very good quality! It's small and light a very fast. I haven't gotten to take too many pictures yet but the ones I have taken so far look great! I would recommend this lense to anybody that is just starting out and wanting to try out a great and affordable prime lens!

Comments about Pentax 35mm DA L F2.4 AL Lens:
This lens has excellent image quality, and a nice surprise is it covers 35mm. I use it on my Pentax P30T as well as my K-5 with excellent results.
The aperture could be faster, maybe f/1.8 or f/2, but at f/2.4 the lens is already extremely sharp and AF is very quick. The MF ring is very smooth and easy to turn as well.
The mount looks really cheaply made, I am afraid one day the lens will just fall apart. If you're familiar with Canon's 50 1.8, you won't be far off in terms of build quality. However, if you're careful with it, the lens should last a long while. Certainly not as long as an older manual focus Takumar, but certainly a few years.

Fantastic prime lens.
It has plastic mount and wish it was a WR lens to go with my K5, but otherwise a great value.

Comments about Pentax 35mm DA L F2.4 AL Lens:
I considered this purchase a compromise between budget and need, and I am very satisfied. It is more versatile than my DA 40 mm and FA 50 mm f1.4, and I used it indoors for our family Christmas under relatively low lighting, and it did very well, focused quickly and produced good color and sharpness. I increased the ISO and EV and could use a faster shutter. During a walk around the neighborhood it was what I wanted - a good walkabout lens without the bulk of my DA18-135. The price was right, and I am glad I added it to my collection.

Comments about Pentax 35mm DA L F2.4 AL Lens:
This is a great all-around lens that can be pressed into almost any situation from indoor candids to landscapes. It is very lightweight, but not cheap feeling. Incredibly sharp. Large enough aperture for good subject isolation. Good color & bokeh. Auto-focuses quickly.
If I was starting out and on a tight budget, this would be my first and only lens. Then I would add a 55-300 or 10-20 or more specialized primes as I learned what I wanted.
For me this will provide the needed bridge between wide (Sigma 10-20) and tele (FA50/1.4) for shooting indoor candids.
I wish Pentax would use a center pull lens cap, easier to use with a hood, though this lens doesn't need a hood as much as the FA50.

Comments about Pentax 35mm DA L F2.4 AL Lens:
The copy I got back focuses on my K-x and my friends K10D. I had to adjust my K-x's focus adjustment to +30 to correct the problem.
This is a very light lens with all plastic build except the glass lens. It is a fairly sharp lens from f2.4 in the center. It focuses fast. Since it's all plastic it actually made my shutter sounded even louder (the K-x has a loud shutter). I don't mind that it does not have quick shift, but I really would like it to have distance marking.
At the end I decided to return the lens because of the back focusing issue. I would have exchanged for another one if I didn't already have the Pentax DA 35mm f2.8 Limited Macro (awesome lens). However, this DAL 35mm f2.4 can produce very nice images.

Comments about Pentax 35mm DA L F2.4 AL Lens:
To me, the fact that the lens housing and mount are plastic is of no consequence (I have a plastic mount Tamrom 70-300 that's nearly 10 years old and still plugs away just fine). Actually, the plastic housing makes for a lighter lens for quick street photog.
I wanted a sharp, reasonably fast 35 for street photography, and this one fits the bill. Bought it from B&H because it has a good return policy, in case I did not like the lens. It's a keeper, though.
Autofocus is quite acceptable, though I would have preferred manual focus distance settings on the lens, even if painted on.

Comments about Pentax 35mm DA L F2.4 AL Lens:
I have been using this lens regularly since receiving it and am very, very happy with the results. Depth of field is excellent at the distances required for portrait shots at wide aperture. Not so shallow that focusing is difficult, but the bokeh are very nice and the sharpness is quite significant for such a budget lens.
Action shots at "normal" exposures are excellent in sharpness of detail and even when shooting in low light. A noticeable increase in fastness over the kit lens, which is also pretty decent.
The only problem for some will be the fact this lens has no metal in it at all. Being very light, I don't think it is a con, but rather makes this a benefit if you run around with a camera in your hand for any length of time.

Very cheap lens.
Impressively lightweight too (very comfortable with my K-x).
For its price, it is pretty fast (2.4 is enough for interior but don't push too far ..).
Even if in plastic, looks quite solid. Good construction quality in general.
Concerning the optic quality, nothing to say but impressive, clear picture, no CA, not much vignetting at 2.4. Once again, impressive for its price !
PS : Focus accurate and fast

Feels light 100% plastic construction (apart from the glass) but that dosn't stop it from producing really great shots.
High res, clear as a bell, light as a feather.
Paired with the K-5 it is great lens worth having.
Indoor shots (at night) no flash, no problem.

Comments about Pentax 35mm DA L F2.4 AL Lens:
I just purchased a K-5. My main purpose for buying it was for low-light portraits and candids, and for my kids' indoor school stage shots. I don't like to use a flash if I can help it. The 35mm lens was going to be for indoor group shots and walk-about.
Buying a single focal length lens VS a zoom, I expected little or no distortion, no matter the price. It has a slow, loud, screw focus. It is bright and clear enough for the price, but I would rather buy a zoom with more focal length, or a better 35mm.
I have the 55 1.4 on order. If that doesn't take care of "walk-about and group shots" I'll buy the 35 2.4 limited (when I can afford).

Comments about Pentax 35mm DA L F2.4 AL Lens:
I purchased this lens for my K-x because I wanted a lens with a bigger aperture range than the 18-55mm kit lens. It feels much lighter than the kit lens. I also like how the lens can be manually focused even when the camera is set to AF. It's worth mentioning that the lens mount is plastic, if that sort of thing bothers you. I haven't had any reason to wish for a metal mount, although pros may want something with a more substantial feel. Also, the lens cap is very cheap, even an inexpensive replacement is much better. Overall, I am very pleased with this lens.

Considering the price I can´t complain about the mechanical quality of this lens (it´s sturdy but with a plastic mount). It´s a sharp, semifast prime at a really low price.
