I have used the camera for capturing speeches, grandkids playing, free-range chickens, and fall foliage. It does a great job of finding and following faces, but you can pick another subject to focus on if you like. It has plenty of zoom, lots of resolutions and frame rates to suit whatever conditions for your desired use. I am a Mac user and I find that iMovie and MacX Video converter Pro easily handle even the 1080p HD movies with no problems. One thing I have discovered is that my computer and my projector are unable to take full advantage of the HD movies at the highest resolution. My HD TV does well with the super Hi Def videos. So, this is a camcorder I can grow into. My next computer will have a Hi Def screen, and my next projector will be capable of HiDef. It is a lot of camcorder, in a small package!

I was looking for a small camcorder to use for backpacking in the Northwest and expected a good quality lens from Canon, based on my experience with their Pro Video Cameras. The camera works as expected with lots of menu options that mimic their prosumer cameras. However, I found completely unacceptable chromatic aberration when the lens is zoomed past about 14x, with red tint along any moderate to high contrast edge. This is usually due to poor optical coating of the lens, and surprised me that Canon produced a product with an inferior 22x zoom lens.

I use my cameras to record church services (specifically the music) with a desire to get high quality sound as well as video. To do this I use a good condenser mic through a clean board or preamp and run the signal into the camera's 1/8" jack otherwise I have to try to synch the sound and audio on the computer (a pain). The input jacks on the Cannon R200 and the R20 (tried both) are FULL of electric static and made a mess of the signal. I had to go with a cheap Kodak. My results are great now.

I bought this camcorder for my 13 year old daughter. when I got it i thought it was to small to do anything. when my daughter got it I realized its was exactly the right size for her hand (how Funny). she has had it for a couple of weeks now and has truely impressed me. she has shot several videos that she posted to you tube. she has used it in several differnt light and weather conditions and she does not have any video training but from her videos you would not know that. the auto mode is truely impressive and it seems to shoot well in low light. my daughter had the cam figured out in 2 days so it seems to be very intuitive. im not even a video amatuer yet but the camcorder makes videos easy I definatly recomend it for home use or amatuers like me and my daughter. I bought it based on B&H user reviews (thank you very much)I am very pleased with it. I purchased it as part of the essentials kits from B&H thank you B&H the essentials kit is brilliant I got everything she needed to use the cam and im now the greateest dad in the world (atleast this week) thank you for making me look like i knew what i was doing.

I bought this camera to use in my elementary school computer lab. My students do a lot of digital storytelling, and this camera has all the features the Flip Video cameras we were using before lacked, and has a much higher quality video to boot. I now have 4 of these, and hope to get 4 more when next year's budget cycle starts. Easy to use, tons of kid friendly features, and easily uploaded using our editing software. I did try the upload utility that came with the camera, and wasn't impressed; this is probably more a symptom of my own opinions and viewpoints than any lack of quality on the manufacturer's part.

I purchased this camera for business use and so far, I'm very pleased with it. The image clarity is great, the stabilization works wonders and the options available within the settings goes far above what I expected. I like that it has an external mic & headphone ability, I like the HD option as well as the utilization of memory cards because it makes me feel that the camera won't become obsolete in a few months. For the price, this camera is really great.
The camera comes equipped with a low-life battery, be prepared to incorporate "charging time" into your regular routine. I would strongly advise using your own editing software because the editing software that came with the camera was really elementary...and I installed the "advanced" option.

This is my first cacorder. I mainly use it to film family memories. After researching the options for camcorders in this price range, I narrowed it down between this one and the HF R20. The only difference being the R20 has some built in memory. I figured I would have to buy a couple of the SD cards anyhow, so I went with this one based on a lower price.
It is very easy to use and the videobrowser software is also a breeze. I highly recommend this camcorder.

Like most offerings in this price range, the Vixia offers high image quality. What I like most about it is the fact that is uses dual SDHC cards for recording, not an internal drive. The cards can be swapped in rotation, offering an infinite recording time.
Also, this camera has a jack that allows either headphones or a microphone to be used, a rare feature in the price range.
The downside, for me, is the battery. It is completely enclosed b¥ the camera, which is a drawback for two reasons. First, you can't buy an extended battery, like you can on cameras where the battery clips on the back. Second, if you have the camera on a tripod, you have to remove it to change batteries. Battery life is around an hour, nothing at all spectacular.
Another downside is the lack of a LANC interface. No one seems to be offering them in this price range anymore.

I have used the camera for capturing speeches, grandkids playing, free-range chickens, and fall foliage. It does a great job of finding and following faces, but you can pick another subject to focus on if you like. It has plenty of zoom, lots of resolutions and frame rates to suit whatever conditions for your desired use. I am a Mac user and I find that iMovie and MacX Video converter Pro easily handle even the 1080p HD movies with no problems. One thing I have discovered is that my computer and my projector are unable to take full advantage of the HD movies at the highest resolution. My HD TV does well with the super Hi Def videos. So, this is a camcorder I can grow into. My next computer will have a Hi Def screen, and my next projector will be capable of HiDef. It is a lot of camcorder, in a small package!

I spent quite a bit of time shopping for the right camcorder. The HF R200 is the result of these inquiries. This is a friendly priced camcorder that has it all. The picture quality is unbelievable and the features provide everything that you could want. I was primarily interested in low light shooting as well as excellent stabilization. This camera has both.
Thank you Canon for this wonderful camera, also the price was right.

When you buy this camera, you actually have purchased two devices: One is for new-to-digital users, which is reached by setting the camera on Auto and letting pre-sets make the decisions; the other is more complex, where all kinds of options are available.
For the near future, at least, I will lean on the Auto option. Lack of a hard-copy user manual and/or instructive video makes the advanced-learning process a bit too complicated for now.

Easy to use and great quality. Exactly what I was expecting, and for the money...probably pretty hard to beat. My FAVORITE feature is that Canon is still putting an external mic connection on their cameras.
