I bought this camera because of Canon's superior lens craftsmanship and image quality. I give it a a very good. However, it suffer's from the professional camera-person's nightmare: No remote controls for zoom, focus, and audio. Every professional knows what I am talking about. To touch a camera (while recording) to get at the controls is a professional no-no because it jiggles the frame. It DOES have the proper audio controls and I can't thank Canon enough for that! It is priced right - another thanks. As a professional looking for an amateur camera I don't need nor want the "added" features like fades, editing, and titles (a waste of my money). I want my money to insure the camera has the basics listed above. Then start adding professional bells and whistles like (maybe) a GPS for time-code and position reporting. I love professional bells and whistles on an amateur camcorder.

I was on the market for an HD camcorder in the $400 range and the Canon came highly recommended from one of the sales representatives at BH so I decided to get it. The camcorder looks very good, it is quite light and compact, but its performance is borderline. By reading all the reviews online I was already aware of its poor low-light performance, but what I wasn't expecting was the extremely poor AF system and the completely inadequate image stabilization. The camcorder had difficulty keeping moving objects in focus and sometimes even still objects with the zoom extended. The image stabilization is so ineffective it is almost like it isn't event there. I was expecting more from Canon, but that goes to show you that the name brand has very little weight nowadays.

Disappointed that the software does not support MAC. Unless I missed something, it appears that I will need to purchase additional software to upload videos.

I started with personal video production and it is growing into a business. I wasn't ready to drop $4-5K for a high end camera but needed a camcorder with an external jack so I could mic people for better sound quality during interviews. The camera works well. I'm still struggling to get used to it but I'm generally happy with it. I recommend purchasing an additional battery as a fully charged battery seems to last less than 1 hour.

this is a nice little camera with decent features and a decent zoom. The only problem with these little cameras is that they're hard to manage without getting your fingers in the way of things and the buttons are too small to becomfortable and too small to find wihtout looking while you're in the middle of filming.

I really like the hd quality. It is very bad if it is not outside due to the fact there is no light. I was in my room and had my fan light on and the camera had terrible quality but when i brought it outside it looked amazing like I was making a proffesional movie. The only bad thing is it is teribble quality if there is not enough light. I really like the slow zoom if you toggle the sitch softly it will zoom in really slow and looks really cool on playback.

Shot my first footage at my kids pep rally inside a gym using the MXP setting at 60i. Had no problems uploading into iMovie and also Windows MovieMaker. After editing, I then uploaded onto YouTube, which has the clips showing as 1080p. Very happy with how the video looks! I am glad I did my homework and decided on this camera. it's small in size and looks good.
when filming on the outside, in the middle of the day you'll get full HD but in any other condition, you'll get poor quality. filming indoors is almost impossible if you want to get HD quality.
It's takes time to get used to the touch screen, you'll need to put pressure on the screen.
use only optical zoom. there's no difference between their advanced zoom and the ordinary electronic zoom.

Bought this camera to get cut away shots (set up on a tripod) during interviews. I like the dual SD card slots and some of the manual features. With good lighting and a steady tripod the footage looks just about as good as my much more expensive main camera. It makes for an inexpensive, low maintenance and easy to use secondary. The touch screen is not very responsive and the footage is not great in lower light conditions.

I was given this camera as a gift, and I'm really happy with it! It's small and light, takes great footage, and is easy to use. The touch screen can be a bit frustrating at times, and the quality isn't very good in low light, but all these things are of minimal importance once you get used to it. This camera was a great choice!

The wife needed to make a series of educational videos for work. She asked me to acquire some capability. I decided that we needed an HiDef camcorder with a mic jack for use with an external microphone. This HF R2xx series has that feature at a price point far below most others I could find. I am in the early stages of learning the camera but it appears to have some very clever features and a wide range of video outputs.
