Canon's WD-H58W 0.8x Wide Converter Lens is optically matched to go with the XA10 HD camcorder, but it is also compatible with other Canon camcorders and can be attached to any lens with a 58mm filter thread. The WD-H58W brings a wider angle of view to your images, for example converting the XA10's 30.4mm lens into 24mm and allowing you to pack more of your subject into the frame. This comes in handy when shooting groups of people, small rooms, or wide landscapes.

big and pro feel about it. comes with a rocking good lens shade that resembles a perfect sized matte box...helpful to differentiate my rig from consumer rigs and also useful to avoid lens flares. sharp picture on canon hf g10 unit. impressed, expensive but solid, gives about a 24mm wide angle view, much more broadcast look, mandatory for good exteriors. minimal bow distortion during first tests. ordered 2pm indiana time, arrived 9am next morning with other gear ordered using the one day ups. altho i use a 5dm2 rig for commercials and corporate videos, the consumer stuff requiring long form video recording with live action focus and exposure assistance makes this a winner on the g10.

Decent Product
Wide angle capability adds variety to video subjects. Great for family events and interior home shots when you want the widest possible coverage. Easy to attach. Lens hood fits on and off quickly.

I ordered the lens for my newly purchased canon XA10. As the other reviewers have pointed out, there is no ability to put a filter on the lens, which seems odd. The only other things I can add are as follows:
1. There is a lens setting in the menu of the canon camcorders ((as least there is in my XA10), that should be selected for optimum lens performance. The setting is called "Lens Converter" and it has three options - none, wide converter, and tele-converter.
2. The hood for the lens needs to be put on so that the longest axis of the hood is in a horizontal plane. If it's vertical, then the picture is obscured on each side. The instructions seem to show that it should be put on vertically, but in order to not block out the picture on each side, it must be put on horizontally.
As others noted, it is a heavy lens, so you need to ensure it's not on a flimsy tripod, because if it tips over, it could knock over the entire tripod.

Well worth the money, this is the second wd58 I have owned ,i had one on my Canon HF s21 and loved it but unfortunately it was stolen by an enterprise car rental employee in Hawaii.... I have tried other brands but was just wasting money so now I stick with a brand I can trust"Canon"

I waited too long to make this investment for my Canon Vixia camcorder, but I'm sure glad I finally did. It works great my family videos by allowing me to get a larger field of view while maintaining excellent image quality. However, it is a bit pricing...but still worth every penny.

I originally bought the Raynox HD-7000 Pro (for a Canon HF-G10), in hopes of saving $180. But I was not happy with the image quality since there was a lot of fuzzyness and lack of clarity on the edges. Especially in dim comditions. But the Canon WD-H58W is MUCH more sharp throughout the whole image. I only took off 1 star because of the price. [$] is WAY too expensive, but you get what you pay for!

Comments about Canon WD-H58W 0.8x Wide Converter Lens:
This lens works like magic in a variety of tough spots. In recent weeks I shot a Canyoneering class in Utah with both Classroom and Outdoor segments. The lens can capture the lecturer and the students even while I was jammed in a corner of a small room with a short jib. In the field I could get the scenery, the climber, and the cliff wall with perfect clarity, no ugly distortion. The most amazing thing was a hallway with a logo and slogan on the wall. In just the width of the hallway, about 5 feet, I got the whole slogan and logo into the shot without panning =) Couldn't believe it.
The price is not cheap, but neither is the lens, it's first class. Looks and feels top quality, and will likely spend more time on my XA10 than it does off of it.
One of my favorite tools, highly recommended for Indoor classes or offices, Outdoor sports and adventures, Scenic (which is what I do).
It is not lightweight, but not overly heavy to me, personally I like the solid feel of the weight.

Great add on lens. Mounted short shotgun mic still barely stays out of the field of view on my XF100. The included hood is fantastic. Protects the lens and provide proper shade for side light sources. Lens cap fits even with the hood mounted. I had the similar WD-58 for my GL2. I used it "most" of the time as well.

Comments about Canon WD-H58W 0.8x Wide Converter Lens:
Took me a while to convince myself to buy this lens. I am so glad I bought it, I love the wider angle, and I am only a little bit of light. No vignetting at wide, just some barrel distortion at wide, not a big deal for me. The big lens shade is a big plus, most WA converters don't come with one, and this one makes a camcorder look even more "pro". I will never take this lens off for as long as I own my XF 100. Absolutely worthwhile purchase.
Comments about Canon WD-H58W 0.8x Wide Converter Lens:
That extra wide angle helps in tight situations. Especially in houses where ceremony could be held, I could even get the whole reception hall if i had the right angle. Great addition!

It was a hard [$]pill to swallow but I was in need of a wide angle lens for my XA10 and my Canon 50D. I bought this lens first hoping that it would work for my stills...and it does. Put it on my 18-55 and it did alright, just have to zoom thru the corners a bit. GREAT GLASS!

I leave this lens on all the time. You lose some light but gain a larger view. I like to close interview shots and shots of buildings. I have not seen any vignetting so I don't need to worry about fixing that in post.
