I am a professional photographer who absolutely hates hauling his Nikon D3s around for family events. I also don't particularly like carrying a still camera AND a video camera.
After doing my homework, I decided to give this little camera a try. I have to say that I have been blown away by the quality of the stills, and mostly by the high definition video! And it's SO freakin' small! Fits in my pants pocket easily.
You have to understand that I'm coming off of an "old" mini DV TAPE video camera. So, to go from that to this digital camera is totally like night and day.
I bought three new digital SDHC cards, and the best value of the three is the Lexar Platinum II 32gb 100x card. It is fast enough to record video at 1080p without a single hiccup. I did get a Sandisk 32gb Extreme card too, but I really wasted my money on that one only because the 200x speed is just not needed with this camera.
My main gripe is that the Canon batteries don't last long AT ALL! I bought a few extra $3.00 generic batteries that work as well or even better! You can find them on that online auction site and other e-tailers.
The image stabilization feature works superbly, but I do notice some "jittery" effects when panning the camera. I'm sure this is due to the camera trying to keep the image stabilized.
Man, with a 32gb card, you can shoot like forever with this camera! And hours of video will fit on the card. I'm in heaven! No more transferring poor-quality tape imagery (which takes forever) to my computer.
I decided to get a compact monopod for this camera because when doing video, it gets difficult to hold the camera for so long. I also bought the underwater housing for it to take it diving. Stills AND video under water! I can't wait to try that out!
I also got the little Canon HF-DC1 flash to go with my new system. It works well most of the time (it has to "see" the flash firing on the camera, so it pretty much won't work in bright light). It is also quite powerful even at its lowest power setting, so it works best on subjects kind of far away. Too close and you'll blow 'em out!
I hope this review helps!

I've owned nearly every version of the Canon Digital ELPH SD Series since it first came out. I've also owned a 10D, 20D, 50D, T2i and 5DMII. I like the SD series P&S for when I don't want to carry my SLR. In the past, I've had great results with all the SD series for point and shoot photos. I decided to try the megazoom this time, instead of the smaller SD series assuming that the newer P&S camera would be at least as good as the SD cameras I've had in years past.
Unfortunately, I've been very disappointed with the results. In AUTO mode, the camera chooses a high ISO (1600) and slow shutterspeed (1/15 or slower) unless there's a ton of light (bright sun only). Most of the photos are very grainy or have motion blur. AUTO mode also rarely uses the pop up flash in low light conditions (even when not blocked by your left finger). Fortunately I understand the manual settings and can override these issues most of the time. For decent results, I won't shoot anything higher than ISO 200 or Shutter Speed slower than 1/60. Yet with those settings, the camera has very poor medium to low light results. The pop up flash is weak, so unless you're close to your subject in low light, you will not get high quality images.
My older Canon SD point & shoot cameras take much better quality photos, and without all the hassle of trying to use manual mode all the time. Ignore the resolution, it doesn't matter when the photos are so grainy or blurry.
A few other minor complaints as well: there's no easy way to delete the last photo taken, you can have to go into play mode then into the menu. As others have mentions, the pop-up flash is often blocked by where you'd naturally place your left index finger. It's slow to focus. Flash is just weak, period. The zoom is slow and not smooth. I've also inadvertently bumped the mode dial several times away from the mode I wanted. It's also somewhat bulkier than the SD series, so I had to buy a different case. For more bulk, I expected better results.
I've been so frustrated with this camera compared to all my previous Canon's. I expected much better results, especially considering it got decent reviews. It seems very uncharacteristic for Canon. I didn't keep the box, wish I did, I'd return it.

I bought it for my wife as a gift. She loves the zoom and wide angle lens. It's a solid feeling camera with good weight to it. It's also a great all around camera when you don't want to haul around the larger DSLR and equipment. The pop-up flash operation takes some getting used to but is no problem. It fits in a shirt pocket.

I had the Canon sx210, (I still have it) but was a little desappointed about the low-light pictures I could take with it, so I got the sx230 hs and in fact my new low-light photos are really betters, it's true that one improves his pictures by using cameras featuring the new CMOS technology. Of course, not only the low-light, but all your pictures are high-quality with the sx230 hs of Canon

Comments about Canon Powershot SX230 HS Digital Camera (Black):
As an amateur photographer, I was looking for a smaller and lighter yet powerful compact mega zoom digital camera. The SX230 provides excellent photos from a small and light camera and gives me manual and semi-automatic controls for taking a variety of pictures. The camera provides many feaures that allow a lot of photographic creativity. The quality of the camera materials seems to be good. The location of the flash and the lack of a hand hold took a little time to get used to, but I have been able to adjust to it. A great little camera with many features packed in and easy to use. Great for travel photography and shooting in the outdoors as it is easy to carry. Battery life is not stellar, so buy an extra or two.

I love to travel and take thousands of photos (literally), normally with a DSLR. I bought this camera so I could carry it my pocket or keep it in a backpack when I didn't want to carry the other one. It was important to me to have a great zoom and good indoor shots. (Most cameras do great outdoor shots anyway.) I have been shooting test shots with this camera and my DSLR and comparing them. This camera does a fabulous job! I am very pleased. It has lots of options for creative photography that are sometimes hard to remember. The worst thing about the camera is it doesn't have a physical manual.

Takes fantastic pictures in all lighting situations I have encountered. Very slick. Lightweight. Easily the best hand-held non-SLR camera I've ever used. Battery life is better then advertised.
I plan to use this camera for my travels overseas.
I was a bit disappointed with the lack of automatic flash (IE: You need to manually deploy the flash by flicking it open before it will operate). But I suppose this saves battery life and I can appreciate that.

Comments about Canon Powershot SX230 HS Digital Camera (Black):
I wanted a camera that would take great pictures in low-light situations as well as action shots of my kids. This camera just does that and more. I am very impressed with the many features this camera has to offer. One of the big selling points for me were the reviews from customers who also have SLR cameras and the comparisons they made of this camera having similar features to that of an SLR. I wanted an SLR, but am not technologically savvy and don't have the patience to learn how to use one. Therefore, this camera fits me just perfectly. It's easy to use. My only complaints are that it's difficult to remember to keep my left finger away from where the flash automatically pops up when turning on the camera, and I think the pictures taken in the low-light setting are only 3mp. The camera is also heavier than I had hoped it would be. But all in all, this is an excellent camera for the price I paid. I also received my camera from B&H Photo Video within two days after placing my order. I had previously ordered this camera from a competitor's site and it was defective. I received poor customer service from them. I am very pleased with B&H.

Great low light shots using !SO 800. The 14X zoom, 28-392mm is amazing to have in a pocket camera. Ok, I wish wide went to 24mm and the flash didn't pop up when camera is turned on. Hard to have everything. The battery: many people complain about the battery life. The answer but another battery at B&H or [@] for under $4. I cary extra batteries for 5 digital cameras and my cell phone. It is a no brainer. I read some coments concerning the lens cover being easily damaged if carried in pocket. Answer, by a hard case at B&H or on line for $6.

I bought this camera to replace a Canon compact I've had for about seven years, and so I don't have to lug my SLR around everywhere. It's very versatile for such a pocketable camera. Great image quality and video not too bad. An ideal travel camera or one to have in your bag or pocket when you are out and about with the kids.

Excellent video although zoom is a bit jerky and video start is delayed.
Camera is a bit heavy although small.
Biggest criticism is placement of flash which is right where I would grip the camera which stops it from opening up. Could have been placed in the center where the GPS hump is and the GPS moved to the side.

I don't have much experience with cameras, but so far I like this one. Very easy to use, great zoom and nice indoor pictures. On the other hand, the flash is located in the top left corner, where you could easily turn it off with your fingers by mistake. Besides, the battery runs low quickly. Overall, I think this a great camera, most people will find it good for its value.
