Due to Apple's OS upgrade, the preinstalled OS may be Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard or OS X 10.7 Lion.
All Apple computers purchased on or after July 21, 2011 can be upgraded to Lion via free download from the Mac App Store within 30 days of purchase.
The 17" MacBook Pro Notebook Computer from Apple is a powerful notebook computer with an innovative aluminum unibody design. It is loaded with advanced power management features and an integrated battery -- they work together to provide up to 7 hours of wireless web browsing.
You may notice an unfamiliar logo next to one of the ports on the left side of the system. This is Thunderbolt, a high-speed interface that can move data at an amazing 10Gbps -- double that of USB 3.0. The Thunderbolt port doubles as a display output -- it shares the same physical form factor as a Mini DisplayPort. You can daisy-chain up to six devices, so you'll be able to connect high-speed external storage and an external LCD display via the same port!
The computer's 17" display features a LED backlight and a glossy finish. Its 1920 x 1200 native resolution gives you ample screen real estate with which to work. You'll be able to output to an external display at up to 2560 x 1600 via Thunderbolt. Any Mini DisplayPort LCD will plug-in without the need for an adapter. If you have a display with DVI, VGA, or HDMI input, you'll only need to purchase an adapter cable for connection.
You'll be able to communicate with friends and family thanks to built-in support for FaceTime chat. The computer's FaceTime HD camera supports 720p HD video chat via the included app. You can make video calls to other Mac users with FaceTime, as well as to anyone with an iPhone 4 or an iPod touch model with a built-in camera.
The system is powered by a quad-core 2.2GHz Intel Core i7 CPU with 3.2GHz Intel Turbo Boost 2.0 support. The computer is loaded with 4GB of memory, a 750GB 5400rpm hard drive, and a SuperDrive DVD burner. You'll be able to connect to the Internet with ease via 802.11n Wi-Fi or wired Gigabit Ethernet. The MacBook Pro also features built-in Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, making it easy to use the system with wireless headphones, keyboard, mice, and other compatible peripherals. An ExpressCard/34 slot is available, allowing you to use compatible expansion cards with the system.
Graphics are handled by a hybrid system that gives you the best of both worlds in regards to battery life and performance. The MacBook Pro will use an integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000 GPU for light tasks -- such as web browsing and word processing. When more performance is needed -- for video games, HD video playback, or the like -- the system will switch over to the dedicated AMD Radeon HD 6750M. The Radeon features 1GB of staggeringly fast GDDR5 memory, which translates into pretty awesome performance.
The computer features a comfortable backlit chiclet-style keyboard, which features space between each key for improved accuracy and comfort when typing. It also sports a glass Multi-Touch trackpad with a clickable design. Rather than having a separate button for mouse clicks, the entire surface of the pad is clickable. This increases the active surface area, and allows you to quickly click, even if your finger is near the top of the trackpad.
What's more, the smooth surface fully supports Multi-Touch gestures -- you can tap the trackpad with one finger to click, with two fingers to right click, scroll through documents using two fingers, pinch to zoom, navigate through Safari or iPhoto with three-finger left and right swipes, or use two fingers to rotate a photo or PDF.
iLife '11 has a complete suite of digital creativity applications. Easy enough for anyone to use, iLife will help you edit your home movies, organize digital photos, and compose original music. iLife includes iPhoto, iMovie and GarageBand.
The 64-bit OS features Time Machine backup, which automatically backs up system data to an external hard drive. It also features intuitive Cover Flow navigation, the powerful Spotlight search tool, and Quick Look document preview. You'll be able to use Boot Camp to run Windows on your Mac.
Note!

Bought this laptop to replace old 17" 1.67 GHZ Apple Powerbook. What a difference !! Of course I was expecting a lot of performance gains. I had decided for some time that I would not buy new Apple laptop until they did quad core well. Now they did. Had considered the 15" model instead, but after doing the math as well as adding high resolution display as well as 1GB video BTO to the 15", the 17" w/expresscard slot really was a no brainer. FirmTek has put out a dual E-Sata 6G bootable expresscard w/dual ports card-which was another consideration-that ruled out the 15" which has an SD slot instead.
The 750GB 5400 rpm stock Toshiba/apple hard drive is kind of mediocre. Replaced Apple drive with the newly released Samsung M8 1TB 5400rpm drive for more on board storage space. Pretty much same performance as the Apple drive-just larger. Unfortunately there still is no 1TB 7200 rpm laptop drives out there yet. There is Seagate Constellation 2.5" 7200rpm 6G 1TB drive but it is 12V I think & will not work in laptops. Also added 2X 4GB memory to bring up to 8GB total.
Some have said the new MBP's are replacement for desktop like MacPro, which I also own. Naw, I don't buy it-unless you consider portability only-then yes of course. Still the machine is snappy, the screen beautiful, battery lasts 7 hrs. unless your doing graphic intense operations w/1GB video card- then much shorter. The trackpad is WONDERFUL. Had used a mouse for yrs. w/Powerbook. With all the gestures already available before Lion even comes out- I can see not using mouse anymore except for intensive moving, copying etc. operations.
Very apprehensive on timing of purchase because of well documented Sata III (or otherwise known as 6G) issues with the SSD 6G drives on the early 2011 17" models. On this week 17(4/26/2011) built machine both hard drive & optical drive interface from board are listed as 6G links. So that was good for the moment. Still have not tried 6G SSD in machine to see if it has problem with any of the 6G SSD's. Waiting for some better prices on them before I buy. But will try before 1 yr. warranty is up. Also hoping some 6G 2.5" spinning drives come out soon- price wise I would be happy with even those.
Also wanted to buy laptop just before Apple released Lion- given all the Rosetta based software that may/will become obsolete. So timed it just before release in July- will still get Lion for free- and still retain Snow Leopard ability to boot.
All in all very pleased so far

Comments about Apple 17" MacBook Pro Notebook Computer:
I recently purchased my first Apple MacBook Pro. The delivery arrived in perfect condition. Apple is quite different from Windows based computers, but the beginning tutorials made a big difference in the startup. I love how quick it starts up from the off position. Still learning my way around. The mouse pad is awesome with all the different gestures you can do on it. At this point there nothing about it I dislike.

Comments about Apple 17" MacBook Pro Notebook Computer:
I use this product for video, music, and photo editing. It's absolutely fantastic compared to the 15inch MBP I had last year, the quad core definitely makes a huge difference as well. I upgraded the RAM to 8gb and thought about getting an SSD but I really do need a lot of space and don't feel like messing with expansion kits and taking it apart and what not.
The only complaints I have are it gets pretty hot but I bought a cooling stand for when I'm idle at home doing all the heavy editing.
Also no SD card slot but I have a usb card reader so it's really not all that inconvenient.

I've used apple products for years, but this current model is a step above the rest in terms of speed. The quality is Apple top-notch. I haven't had any problems with it at all. Everything is well thought out and just works. It came with Snow Leopard and I installed everything and then updated to Lion and everything has worked seamlessly.
Great service, great price!

Comments about Apple 17" MacBook Pro Notebook Computer:
This thing is beautiful and fast. The screen is so bright, I usually don't even like to set it at the highest brightness. It is extremely thin- it doesn't have that bulky feeling like PCs usually do.
One slight complaint is all the ports are on one side. There are 3 USB ports, power adapter port, one ethernet, one firewire, one expresscard slot, and one thunderbolt port, all on the same side. The magsafe power adapter cord now attaches parallel to the side of the laptop, instead of straight into it on a 90-degree angle. I thought this was kind of awkward.
But overall everything is beautiful, fast, thin, lightweight. I love it!

Comments about Apple 17" MacBook Pro Notebook Computer:
Being a Windows consumer for many years, I have learned many of the shortcut keys and other ways to optimize my performance with that operating system. After a couple weeks with the Macbook Pro, I have found myself constantly researching shortcut keys and uninstallation methods to get to a level of understanding that I took for granted with a Windows machine. As with any change, it will take some time to get used to a new way of doing things (like Close, Minimize, Maximize buttons on the left instead of right and no double click to Maximize/Restore windows).
That being said, the Macbook Pro has a form factor that is unparalleled and a style that is currently unmatched by other laptops. OS X Lion installed quickly and was free to upgrade with Apple's Up-To-Date Program.
Overall, an excellent computer from B&H, a trusted store, at the lowest price I could find.
