Nikon's D5100 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only) has a galaxy of professional features not commonly found in a consumer digital camera. A high-resolution 16.2MP DX-format CMOS sensor and an EXPEED 2 image processing engine guarantee superb quality and high performance. The 3.0" vari-angle tilting LCD monitor allows you full freedom in composition with sparkling 921,000-dot resolution. Full 1920 x 1080p video with full-time autofocus (for tracking subjects in motion) and stereo sound (using an optional microphone) is always available with in-camera editing and creative controls to activate your inner movie director.
The Effects mode provides a dazzling array of special effects for putting your individual stamp on all of your images--still photos or video. Selective Color, for instance, isolates any color within a scene, and Night Vision captures details in places too dark for your own eyes. High Key effect will create bright, glowing images filled with atmosphere and mystery, or you can emphasize the mood of a scene using Low Key, or try out Miniature Effect--which produces a scene that looks like a miniature scale model.
With sensitivity ranging from 100 to 6400 ISO, you'll be able to make photos and videos that are amazingly rich, even in low light. In-camera HDR (High Dynamic Range) mode will tame high contrast situations by automatically capturing multiple exposures of the scene and combining them for vastly improved contrast and low noise. A blazing fast 11-point autofocus system and split-second shutter response mean that you won't miss photo opportunities waiting for your camera to catch up. The built-in speedlight has i-TTL for accurate, well-balanced flash every time.
With the Scene Recognition system, 420-pixel RGB 3D Color Matrix Metering II, 16 automatic exposure scene modes, and Active D-Lighting, your control over your photos and movies will be more precise and simple to carry out than ever. And you don't need to worry about dust ruining an image--the automatic image sensor cleaning function has it under control.

About a month ago, I pulled myself away from my beloved D50 to experience what technology has done in the last 6 years. I was drawn to the D5100 because of the articulating screen. Do you know how many times I got my shirt all muddy trying to get an upward shot of a low lying subject? This proved to be the best feature of the camera, and I would not be surprised to see all of Nikon's cameras with such a device. The camera is smaller than my previous but I don't find it uncomfortable, and I do have large hands. The controls are a little different to accommodate the screen hinge, but it only took a couple of days to get used to it. I would suggest reading Tom Hogan's guide book. I had one for my D50, and I got one for this camera as well. He is straight forward about using the strengths of the camera and avoiding some pitfalls it has. His guidance made me fall in love with my D50. The only negative I found was how the directional pad feels. I has a cheap plastic feel to it. I'm sure it will be ok, as my plastic D50 held up to alot of abuse. The menus are layed out intuitively, and the on screen controls are great. As your ready to shoot, if you want to change a common setting, say, how the camera is metering, you hit the "I" button right by your thumb and scroll with wheel to that item and there you go, your all set.
I could write pages about this camera, but I'll just summarize. This is a great camera for entry level DSLR and would satisfy even a pro-level photographer. I'm just a hobbiest trying to be like a pro, and I love it.
A plug for B and H. I have purchased numerous things from them. I find them professional and they deliver outstanding service. You can't go wrong.

Pros:
- Low light capability
- Easy to use
- Fantastic image quality
- Video at 1080p 30
Cons:
- There is no way to know what focus distance the camera is at. The camera gives no indication of where focus is as a distance. When using liveview in sunlight, it becomes impossible to know where your focus is set.
- Viewfinder not 100% viewing area, so it does not match the 100% view in the live view mode.
- Video capabilities are not fully baked, there is little information displayed.
- Manual settings are awkward, especially for video.
- There is a bug where pictures taken in Live view have a missing right pixel edge.

Comments about Nikon D5100 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
Purchased D5100 along with 55-200 VR lens. So far everything is what I expected. This is my first DSLR and I am very pleased with the system. Plan to use it for both travel and sports photos, and really like the video capability of this camera. I have stepped up from a Coolpix 5400, about 2006 vintage, so I was a bit familiar with the icons etc.
Swivel LCD screen was a driver in my decision to go with this model.

The D5100 is much easier to use than the D3100 because of its (almost) intuitive menu, great histogram display, universal axis display screen, and easy video controller.

Comments about Nikon D5100 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
This is my first DSLR. I got it with the intention of learning more about photography; how lenses work, composition, depth of field and the D5100 is proving to be the ideal platform for me to learn from.
I didn't want to just set it to Auto and shoot, I wanted to learn about Apeture, shutter speeds, ISOs and what have you and I have found it fulfilling those desires perfectly. It does take discipline to learn what everything does, but with the right attitude it'll become second nature pretty quickly. After a few days I was selecting aperture, ISO and shutter speed with no problems. I'm not fully confident to have it on full Manual yet, so I have it on the Apeture function most of the time, which allows me to select the apeture I want and it takes care of shutter speed for the correct exposure.
My only gripe is that there should be another function button or two to get quicker access to your preferred settings.

I bought this as an upgrade from a D40... I'm very happy with it. The higher ISO sensitivity is helpful. Lots of useful features... and lots of features I don't use, but they don't get in the way. Having video is cool, especially when using a VR lens.

I purchased this camera body to upgrade from a D60, my starter camera. The D5100 had features the D60 didn't such as bracketing and greater megapixels, but I was really impressed with the special effects such as Selective Color and Miniature Effect.

Was a toss up between this Nikon D5100 or the Canon EOS Rebel 3i.
Nikon won!
The determining factor was the Nikon features auto focus during HD video.
Being that I have a young child, that is a must for maintaining focus while he runs around.
So far I love the pics that this camera produce and the loads of features for shooting AND editing right on the camera.
It is taking some getting used to, but I am fully pleased with this purchase.

Comments about Nikon D5100 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
Things I like: good exposures in Auto modes; major functions accessible with the "I" button; not very grainy at ISO 6400,4 frames/sec shutter, battery life seems good (over 500 pics with no flash).
Things I dislike: to view pics you have to open the screen like a video camera. This works fine but seems like it would break rather easily if pushed forward past its stopping point. Also, you have to use an original Nikon battery. Other vendors batteries (1/3 the cost) will not work in the 5100.

This camera is a great improvement from my pervious camera. The screen is very large and easy to use. I like how you can take the picture using either the screen or the viewfinder. The body of this camera is very light also. The weight of it with a 500mm lense on it feels the same as just the body of my old camera. I find that when not using the screen to view the image the graphics for the shutter and appature settings is very helpful. There ar so many great settings to use on this camera. You can even edit pictures in the camera so that it looks like you have used a fisheye lense. I do not haveanything bad to say so far. I would definitely advise other to use this camera. Overall super easy to use and great quality!

As a beginner to DSLRs, I found the little "?" blinking in the viewfinder when the conditions weren't perfect pretty handy, and allowed me to make any required adjustments. There is also a "?" button on the body which I use when I don't know what a function or setting is and it will display an info window.

Like:
- big tilt/swivel LCD, although I use viewfinder, but for after shot preview it is perfect
- very light-weight
- special mode, which shut off the pop-up flash thus preventing its pop-up every time you want to take a shot
Dislike:
- a bit slower autofocus compared to competition
- zooming in video mode introduces a lot of noise in to a video
- need to update a firmware in order to use some memory cards such as Sandisk 32GB SDHC class10 card(SDSDRX3-032G-A21)

Comments about Nikon D5100 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
My research left me with 2 options - D7000 and D5100. D5100 is cheaper, has better Live View and Video and more compact and lightweight body. Compared to the D3100 it has better image quality, speed and resolution.
B&H promptly delivered my items. Unfortunately I ordered, inadvertently -a Tamron 18 to 270 for Sony instead of Nikon and before I could let them know not to ship it they had. The whole process of ordering the right Tamron, getting that, returning the wrong one and getting my account reimbursed was a breeze and fairly quick.
I have taken the D5100 for a test run (along with my Tamron lens) and so far it has exceeded my expectations. I have taken pictures as well as video and they have come out well.
Among the things I like:
- 16 MP sensor that delivers 14-Bit RAW images
- ISO 100 - 6400
- Live View Mode with coninuous autofocus
- Better feel in the hands on account of optimal size and weight
- 4fps (would have liked 6)for video
- In-Camera Editing
- Great Battery Life

Comments about Nikon D5100 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I upgraded from the D3100 to this D5100 because I was looking for a second camera. I compared its features with the D7000 and could not justify the price diffence for the in-camera motor. Plus, I have new lenses with built-in motors. This is an amazing camera. I was pleased with the extra effects/scene modes. Although I shoot mostly manual, they are fun to play with. I think someone new to photography would really enjoy the ease of this model. BTW, the night mode is a little weak in most situations. Be sure to read the manual.
My first test out of the box was shooting a basketball game. Once I got my all of my settings like I wanted the photos were great. The shutter speed and continuous shooting were fast enough to get great shots at various levels. I can't wait to see what else this camera can do!
The ISO is much better than the D3100. I haven't noticed much noise at higher ISO (much less than the D3100). It shoots great in low light as well. I also love that it has a longer self-timer. The D5100 also has bracketing and in-camera HDR (which I am still playing with) that the D3100 doesn't have. I haven't maxed out the battery yet, so I would say that's a great sign.
So far I have no regrets about getting this model. With the price I saved by not getting the D7000 I can buy another lens.

Comments about Nikon D5100 Digital SLR Camera (Body Only):
I bought the D5100 (body only) to replace my D60, using the same kit lens that came with the D60. The form factor is very similar to the D60, which is what I wanted, but the D5100 offers so much more. One note: if you plan on using a larger or heavier lens, such as the Nikon 18-200mm zoom, you *may* find that it's worth the extra money to move up to the D7000. A larger lens will work on the D5100, but the set-up may feel unbalanced. But at approximately half the price of the D7000 body, the D5100 offers great value and for those of us who prefer a smaller, lighter camera, it's an excellent choice.
I like having the option to record HD video (the D60 had no video at all), though that isn't going to be my main use for the camera. Low light performance is much better than the D60, and the D5100 has 11 focus points, compared to 4 on the D60. It also offers a better sensor. My main reason for the upgrade was to get better images in low light, and I have not been disappointed. I am able to get really good shots in low light without flash, but flash results are also much better than what I was getting with the D60. Colors and exposure are better with flash on the D5100, especially using the Nikon SB400 flash (though the camera's own flash gets good results, too). Images with flash tend to be less washed out than with the D60.
The controls and the menu interface seem more intuitive to me than the D60, but that could be because I actually took the time to read the manual this time, whereas with the D60 I charged up the battery and started shooting, mostly in Auto mode. On the D5100, I set the Function button on the camera to White Balance, and using this button, along with Live View, I'm able to see on the LCD the effect of the various WB settings. This is a great way to preview before using the viewfinder to compose the shot. Switching between Live View and viewfinder is very fast and easy. Of course you can compose and shoot using the LCD too, but I prefer the viewfinder.
Battery life seems good, though using Live View will drain the battery faster than the viewfinder. I bought a spare battery so that I can use Live View without worrying about the battery.
I still have a lot to learn, but I'm very happy with the camera and I consider it to be a major upgrade to the D60. I was also very happy with the price and speed of delivery that B and H offered.

Got the D5100 to go along with my D300s and D7000. Really like those special effects and the swivel screen. Wish Nikon would add the swivel screen to its higher end cameras like the D7000. The D5100 is hard to beat for the price. Excellent picture quality.
