The U43Jc-C1 14" Notebook Computer from ASUS is a compact notebook computer with a striking bamboo and aluminum chassis. The system balances the organic and the inorganic in its design, creating a juxtaposition that is both unique and stylish.
The system's 8-cell battery keeps the notebook running for up to 10.5 hours between charges. Graphics are handled by an nVIDIA/Intel hybrid system. The computer uses a dedicated nVIDIA GeForce 310M GPU with 1GB of memory when performance is required. It switches to an integrated Intel GMA HD GPU during normal operation, helping to extend battery life.
The computer supports Intel's Wireless Display technology, which allows you to connect to an HDTV wirelessly. You'll need the optional Netgear Push2TV accessory to utilize this technology. For wired connectivity to an HDTV, the notebook features an HDMI output.
The computer is powered by a 2.66GHz Intel Core i5-480M CPU, which can be overclocked to 2.933GHz thanks to Intel Turbo Boost. It boasts 4GB of RAM, a 640GB 5400rpm hard drive, Bluetooth, 802.11n Wi-Fi, and an integrated webcam. Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) is the installed operating system.

I purchased this about 3 weeks ago when my previous (also ASUS) laptop died. Here's what I think so far:
- performance: very good, fast, just what i expected from the i5. Mind you, I'm not a gamer, so I'm not sure how it behaves in that situation. Battery life is good if you choose the right power option (saving mode once the laptop is unplugged), but not as great as advertised.
- looks: this was one of the major selling features for me personally. I like unusual looking minimalistically designed laptops, and this one was a winner. bamboo of the palm rest is much lighter in color than the top cover, so I think the top cover stuff is actually plastic. Was a little disappointed by that, but then decided it's for the best, since the top cover can get scratched/dirty easily (I take my laptop to work/libraries/coffee shops sometimes), so plastic is a more practical choice. I just wish the color matched:) Chrome parts appear to be plastic as well, which is no big deal for me. A word of caution for some of the messier users: this laptop is very prone to fingerprints. Bottom is made of pretty cheap-looking plastic, too, but who cares about the bottom? A few reviewers on other retail sites complained about the flimsiness of the bottom right corner near the dvd drive. It is indeed a little flimsy and I noticed the same thing in some other asus laptop models, though I don't think its a concern in this particular one unless you grab the laptop exclusively by that corner.
- other: very little, if any, noise. As a matter of fact, it's really quiet unless a lot of programs run at the same time. Great LED screen, even though there is a lot of glare in the daylight (which I was expecting anyways). Touchpad was acting up the first day I got the laptop: it seemed that pressing anywhere close to the touchpad (e.g. during typing) somehow activated the cursor which was messing up whatever I typed by selecting the text and deleting it or causing me to type the text in a different place. Annoying as it was (I was thinking of returning the laptop), this problem disappeared the next day. Not sure how it got resolved. Perhaps installing all required updates helped.. Still a mystery to me. touchpad buttons are a little tough to press, but I think that's going to go away with continued use. I don't use mine all that often, so it's no big deal. Speakers: pretty okay for a laptop this size, nothing spectacular yet I'm not going to complain. If everything was top quality, this machine would cost much more than it does.
So far I am enjoying using this product. All in all, I think it's a good combination of design, performance and cost.

On paper, the Asus U43JC-C1 looks like it has everything going for it, but with the amount of bloatware on board, it feels slow for a computer of this pedigree: even with an i5 (first generation, not Sandy Bridge) processor and 4 GB of DDR3 RAM, the task bar was showing a workload of 68 to 70% with nothing really running in the background. Deleting these gimmicky software -- which, by the way, is a revenue generator for PC manufacturers -- is not always straight forward as uninstalling the Oberon games may inadvertently change the registry setting. Further, Asus should have provided a copy of the Windows 7 disc for those who want to do a clean installation. The computer also feels heavier than the advertised 4.7 pounds, but the material is of good quality and the surfaces are cool to the touch. Keyboard is excellent, although the touch pad is jumpy and has a tendency of moving the cursor to other parts of the screen when typing (tried adjusting the settings, but nothing seems to work).

Comments about ASUS U43Jc-C1 14" Notebook Computer (Bamboo):
Pros:
* Chrome and bamboo - gorgeous! :)
* Comes with low bloatware levels, other than the SW to conserve battery.
* quiet and cool
* accidental damage warranty
* battery life - awesome! I left my house for the airport at 6AM, arrived at destination at 930PM, and used the laptop pretty much the whole day in planes, terminals, restaurants, cars; the battery was empty by then, but I was impressed. In batterysaver mode, it turns off the CD drive, autohides the Windows Explorer bar, turns off your desktop background in favor of a plain white desktop, and turns off the LCD backlight after 1 minute idle.
*slim and light - compact 14" FF is ideal for reading/movies on airplanes with small seats and tray tables. light enough to easily carry in one hand while opened.
*powerful - i5 clocks up to 2.9GHz, discrete 310M GPU, 4GB DDR3 and 640GB HDD. The Intel HD onboard graphics are powerful enough that the discrete GPU doesn't turn on all the time.
* touchpad multi-touch works
Cons:
* #1 problem I noticed is the touch pad. I don't know if it is because of the bamboo surface, but the touch pad is not very precise. trying to do fine pointing, my mouse button sometimes jumps raggedly or clicks when I didn't want it to, when my finger is in certain portions of the pad. The mousepad buttons are rather stiff, taking a bit of force to activate, and have an audible 'click' to them (a matter of taste).
*Fit and finish - the use of actual wooden slabs of bamboo constrains perfect fit, I guess. Around the edges of the top panel and sides of the palmrest, there are places where the bamboo doesn't meet the trim perfectly. running your hand over the edges of the machine, you can definitely feel it, which is annoying. but not distracting.
* sturdiness - the underside of the laptop, under the DVD R/W drive, feels very mushy. This is a common problem with lots of laptops, but it still scared me a couple times when I tried to pick the laptop up by that area.
Other Thoughts: Overall, this is a nice laptop! and since I got it for $DCC I won't complain too much. I have a friend who purchased the same model, and she said she hasn't noticed any of the touchpad issues I have; maybe I just got one with a weird piece of bamboo? I'll ask ASUS.

Bamboo never looked so good...I purchased this as an executive laptop, and it really delivers. After ridding all the bloatware on the drive, I installed all the necessary software, then decided to benchmark the unit. Dirt 2 averaged 25fps, and maxed out at 32fps. The GeForce chipset came into it;s own for a [$] notebook! Pleasant surprise when I ran CPU-Z and watched the CPU hit 3.1GHZ!!!Sound is good, and the ram performs well too. Would have liked better battery performance, as on the lowest settings, I could only manage 7.5 hours.Overall, the best Notebook money can buy - I just hope it's still on the shelves as I speak...

I use the laptop for college and occasional gaming. I absolutely love the nature element in this notebook. It is smaller than my last computer, but I didn't have any problems adjusting. The heat from the side of the keyboard freaked me out. But fiance said it is because the laptop is made of bamboo and aluminum, so the heat is going away from the insides. We set up CoreTemp, and sure enough, normal temps. Sound is a bit soft. But overall great computer!

Really Nice computer for the price point. Not only does it look great and have a great design but it also has great internal specs. What really sold me on getting this from other ones was the bamboo and aluminum design (and of course that its an Asus). Haven't had any problems so far and the battery life is incredible! Would defiantly recommend to anyone looking to buy a computer around this price point.

It a beautiful product. The screen is nice. The battery life is 5 hours.
The only problem is the touchpad, the left click is difficult. Now i use another external keyboard.
He is a little heavy. 14 inches but it is not an e omputer, it likes to stay on a table, not on your knees.

I know that there are a lot of laptops that have more memory and are faster than this ASUS, however, for my uses this is a great computer. My main uses are internet, word processing, and managing my digital pictures. My wife and I do a lot of traveling and we plan to take this laptop along with us. My only criticism, as others have said, is the touch pad can be a little difficult to use. It seems to be affected by the oil from your skin, which can make your finger stick as you move it across the pad.

bamboo look is very nice, very good finish. battery can last more than 6h in office mode. to facilitate the transport, the charger could have been smaller.
can even run some games in low/medium details as crysis.
good sound quality, but not so loud

This is my first prodcut by ASUS and I am pleased with the quality of the computer. It looks sleek and is relatively lightweight. The most important features are that the computer is fast and efficient and I am learning all of the features that the maker includes, such as ExpressGate. It was easy to set up and works very well. The touchpad and buttons are a little clumsy but overall the design is good.

the laptop was by far the best looking laptop i have ever seen but within 3 days I had multiple issues including freezing, simply not doing a web search and running at 2.5 gb of memory when at idle. Also the laptop and charger were very hot within a short period of time. Maybe I just got a lemon I have heard so much good about ASUS

I've had the notebook for a week now, and I am satisfied so far. Bamboo finish is very stylish and the computer is fast once started up, but I expected the start up to be faster(lots of bloatware).
