The Sony Alpha NEX-5N Digital Camera (Body Only) is another capable soldier in the army of not point-and-shoot not a DSLR. This genre, if you will, holds its place in the market, intriguing those who want the flexibility that interchangeable lenses and numerous manual and creative features can give them, without having to lug around a huge DSLR body. The NEX-5N doesn't disappoint. In fact, Sony boasts the camera's extremely small form-factor as being one of the smallest in its class.
Size aside, the Alpha NEX-5N embodies a number of features that make it a worthy option for any connoisseur of digital cameras. First and foremost would be the 16.1Mp APS-C CMOS sensor. With 16.1Mp your images will have lush color and impressive detail. Your options for making enlarged prints are boundless as well. Sony's Exmor APS HD CMOS technology works together with the BIONZ image processor for excellent low light sensitivity and a distinct lack of sensor noise. On the back of the body is a 3.0" Xtra Fine LCD that boasts Sony's TruBlack screen which suppresses internal reflections. This LCD also tilts down 45° and up 80° for framing hard-to-get shots.
In addition to capturing still images, every digital junkie longs to let their filmmaker persona out. Sony's NEX-5N does not disappoint this class of aspiring Spielbergs. The long standing camera company knows that in addition to versatility in lens options, along with a small form-factor, the HD video capture is right up there in importance. Video can be recorded at 1920 x 1080 in a number of frame rates, including 60p and 24p. The camera also uses the AVCHD codec for high-quality capture, and the MP4 codec for easy upload to the Internet. The camera also sports an HDMI output for one-cable sharing of your favorite videos on the big screen (AKA: your HDTV).
When it comes to what lenses the NEX-5N takes, Sony made it compatible with their E-Mount series of smaller, lighter lenses designed specifically for Alpha compact interchangeable lens cameras. Using optional LA-EA1 and EA2 adapters you can also attach A-Mount lenses to the camera as well. The LA-EA2 also provides Phase Detection AF as well. The mirror built-in between the two mounts directs a small portion of light to the phase detection AF sensor in the bottom of the unit, making this feature available to you when the adapter is connected.
As for shooting options and modes, the NEX-5N has a number of them. First up is 10 frames per second shooting, at the camera's full 16.1Mp resolution. This mode enables great sports and kids photos. Another notable feature is Photo Creativity Touch. This mode allows you to be creative with your photos in-camera, right on the LCD screen, in real time. Sweep Panorama and 3D Sweep Panorama modes allow for capture of scenic vistas and 16:9 (wide angle) shots as panoramas and in wondrous 3D, respectively. Among the other features you'll find Object Tracking AF, Auto HDR, Intelligent Auto Focus, iAUTO mode, and many others. A HVL-F7 auxiliary flash is included.

This camera does not replace a DSLR camera, there, that said I'll continue.
I had a 7D, loved it, hated carrying it and all the lenses around and found myself preferring to leave it at home than to lug it around.
So why buy a DSLR if you can have a mirror-less camera that weighs on average 11 lbs less (yeah, that's right, 11 lbs less to carry around your neck) and takes photos that are equal to or better than any APS-C DSLR around today (including the Canon 7D and the Nikon D7000)?
Well, if you really need true high fps, while this camera can take some really quick shots, it's more of a burst than continuous. My 7D could take 8 fps all day long even in RAW, no way with this guy. Also, if you need to adjust settings on-the-fly without looking at a screen and with just a 'feel' of the camera the DSLR owns this camera all day long. Of course there are the different modes of auto-focus etc. that also prove the DSLR technology to be superior.
But, if you don't need the above, this camera takes BETTER pictures than my 7D, weighs on average 11 lbs less, costs well over 1,000 dollars less (for just the body), has more everyday features that really work well, and higher end functions like bracketing, HDR, full manual control, and RAW file output just like the big boys.
If you're not a professional photographer or don't have aspirations to become one, you don't need a DSLR, you need this camera.
The quality of your photography is now only limited by your imagination.

Let me start with that I use canon 5D with 6 lenses for a few years now and I was reading about NEX series for quite a while. So I get NEX 5N as a second camera and it surprised me in a good way. High ISO images (good samples can be found at dpreview.com) are very usable. ISO 1600/3200 is so much better compared to what I get with my full frame canon 5D! Video quality is brilliant and my camera is producing clear sound without ugly clicks reported by engadget.com. For Full HD 60p quality you have to have a faster SD card because 27mb/sec stream is not something common for SD class 10 cards. Sandisc extreme series (30Mb/sec write speed) handles video recording task very well. With bigger screan, focus tracking and other features on, NEX 5N consumes its small 1080mAh battery pretty fast, so if you plan extended shooting sessions - an extra battery is a must.I didn't see many cases to fit NEX 5N with 18-200 lens attached. My choice is Kata 3-n-1 backpack which fits camera+lens+iPad and leaves a lot of room for other stuff. Very stylish and high quality bag.Now why I put 3 stars only:1. Magnesium body and overall ex-x-xellent build quality is ruined by plastic ON switch. Minus .5 star.2. Flash is ugly. It is a shame for engineers cause flash is unusable it short range with 18-200mm lens on. Minus 1.5 stars.Overall I am really glad to own this camera. I keep my fingers crossed for sony to introduce a good flash unit and perphaps I'll sell my Canon 5D as picture quality is comparable if not better.

Primary use is video shooting mainly while mounted on a multirotor. It is not a perfect product but it does it job. It cant be compared to hacked GH2 but with right setting graduated tones can be achieve.
The disadvante of NEX 5N is the limited range of lens that are currently available. Having adapter is good but with multirotor weight is the enemy

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-5N Digital Camera (Body Only):
This is my first "enthusiast" camera, however the touchscreen interface with pop-up help makes it is so easy to use, it feels like a point-and-shoot camera. The automatic (i-photo) mode enables truly amazing photos every time. The resolution and lack of noise even in dim light results in pro quality images. I am using the 30mm macro lens for general use and the quality is fantastic. With the macro lens I want to walk up to every flower and snap a photo. The images make me giddy. Can't believe how easy it is to take high quality photos.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-5N Digital Camera (Body Only):
As a long time enthusiast with Canon A-1 and 5D Mk1 with the 24-105 L lens, I was hoping to be able to be able to use my manual FD lenses (3.5/50 macro, 1.4/50, 28-85 zoom) and a Series One Vivitar 3.5/ 70-210mm again, even with the longer reach and likely change in depth of field...by using the Novoflex adapter and the 5N body.
I found very mixed results and can only offer limited information as a caution to those interested in this combination. First, I will say that the color and bokeh are quiet beautiful, consistently better than I remembered with my film images with these lenses. Unfortunately the loss of DOF was much greater than I expected in this set up and the Peaking System and magnification, while helpful, was not enough to allow me to get the focus placed correctly much of the time. Perhaps an EVF would help.
I do not fault the Novoflex adapter as I was able to get extremely sharp focus in several lenses both hand held and on tripod for flat work. I do think that one must learn the more limited capabilities of this set up and I simply don't have the time and patience to do that.
I believe the 5N is an exceptional technology, but my hopes that my smaller FD lenses would be in good proportion to the 5N body have been dampened by the experiment. Next stop may be the NEX-7 with extra $$$ for a small quality lens or two.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-5N Digital Camera (Body Only):
I purchased the camera mainly for travel, but have been using it as a carry around camera and for architecture at home. I wanted some of the features of my snapshot cameras along with my Nikon lenses and image quality consistent with my D300. The first thing I noticed was that I am much more aware of my lenses than on other bodies. The body is so unobtrusive and simple to use. My prime lenses work beautifully with the Novoflex adapter, which I had to figure into the price when I decided to get the camera. My old 35mm PC lens is easier to use with this camera than it ever was with an SLR. I just have to adjust the aperture ring until the exposure is right--no opening up and stopping down. With the adapter the camera essentially has the functions of my Nikon F3. There is aperture priority or manual exposure. For manual, it is easy to change shutter speeds or ISO. For auto exposure, it is easy to adjust the +/- EV. The live view and histogram are invaluable exposure aids while making the adjustments. Manual focus is easy. The outlines (peaking) around sharp edges are effective in most circumstances. The magnified view works well when peaking doesn't. The image quality is excellent to about ISO 1600. Beyond that, you can expect some grain and then some noise, or softening from noise elimination. It can capture an image in remarkable dim light if you don't need pristine quality. The viewfinder holds up well enough in bright sun to tell what you are photographing, if not in all detail. You have the scene right in front of you for that. You just need to know what the viewfinder includes. I sometimes have to shade the viewfinder to see the shutter speed and histogram, but not often, at least not where I live. If you are used to using mirror less snapshot cameras, or even ground glass under a focusing cloth, you shouldn't have a problem without a viewfinder. The shutter sound is pronounced--louder than a Leica, but less than an SLR. The camera is nicely designed. The Novoflex adapter and Nikon lenses seem like a part of the camera itself, not add-ons. One annoyance you have to learn to avoid is the ease of inadvertently pressing the video button.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-5N Digital Camera (Body Only):
I've had the NEX5n for about a month now, and enjoy it very much as a carry-around. With 16mm lens, external viewfinder, shotgun mic, mini-flash, spare battery, charger, USB cable and card reader, all fits in a tiny featherweight 6x8x8 padded bag. This would be unremarkable if we were discussing a consumer-grade point-and-shoot camera, but this is something else entirely; the sensor produces still images rivaling my D70 (surpassing it in low light), and the 1080/60p video is simply stunning (same capabilities as the VG-20, with more controls). With an adapter I use my Nikon DX lenses (without autofocus), and there are adapters available for Leica M, Cine, and many other mounts - although the camera lacks audio inputs, and has only a proprietary hot shoe for a few Sony accessories.
As a lifelong street photographer, and former film/video professional, I have to say this camera is a real winner, you will never feel like leaving it at home. The fast 16mm lens is quite impressive for the price. The unique EVF is nice for manually focusing in low light, amplifying the brightness when necessary, like a military night-vision scope, though the large built-in LCD is sharp and bright enough for most situations, with useful touchscreen controls. The stereo shotgun mic can be adjusted to several spread angles (good for interview or performance), while the built-in stereo mics are adequate for ambient recording. The tiny included flash is too bright and narrow for the 16mm lens, but a bit of diffusion gel should soften it up. Best of all, you can leave all the accessories in the bag most of the time, and have fun with a pocket-size camera that can produce incredible results, in both still and video, in almost any situation, including low-light settings beyond the capabilities of cameras which cost (and weigh) ten times as much.

I have now used this camera for more than three months and even over time I am finding it to be extremely aggravating to use. I do love the size, but other than that I am really hating everything else. Then menus are cumbersome, the movie record button is horribly located, there is a tremendous amount of lag at times for the camera to come out of sleep and auto focus seems worse than a cheap point & shoot. (I had a bald eagle sitting still in a tree and selecting it to focus was both ridiculous and unsuccessful - sitting in a tree! not moving) Retrieving files from the SD card on an Apple has been confusing at best, quite frankly the whole system seems convoluted and lacking all reasonable efficiency in the design
I honestly regret buying into this Sony system and hope that other companies step up into the mirror-less camera arena.

I'm using the Camera as a walk around alternative to my Canon 5D markII. So Far it hasn't disappointed. But some of the credit goes to my old Contax G lenses that I've adapted.
Pros - Color Balance is good, Fits in my pocket, Manual focusing is easy with the Magnification and Focus Peaking Assist. Results very good almost great
Cons - Sony lenses are just too big for the Camera. They should take notice of what Panasonic is doing with their new line of lenses for the G series.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-5N Digital Camera (Body Only):
I am really delighted with this little camera. The APS-C sensor is terrific and I'm getting great images all the way up to ISO 3200 (I've got it, actually them, both set on auto ISO).
The kit lens is fine, not outstanding, but the 24mm Zeiss is. I've rounded out my lens selection with the 55-210mm OSS and CV 15mm Heliar. I can't imagine using the 5n without the EVF. Manual focussing is a snap with the "peaking" function enabled. Body and lens build quality is very good.
To my mind, the 5n is a perfect complement to the NEX-7 (when it finally arrives). One stop better ISO performance and more tolerant of third party lenses.
Highly recommended -- but keep your DSLR for sports and action shots!

First, the only reason why I bought this to replace my NEX-5 is for the EVF support. After shooting with the NEX-5 and the Voigtlander 35mm for almost a year I feel it is the best pocketable camera I have ever used. It takes forever to startup and it needs an EVF, but it's still better than any other digital pocket cam I have used to date. I was surprised and very disappointed when Sony announced the FDA-EV1S EVF would not support the NEX-5, but I quickly decided to sell the NEX-5 and buy the NEX-5N and EVF. I am very happy with the improvement in speed, ISO 3200 image quality, and EVF!

Upgraded from a older high end sony handycam and mid-range Alpha DSLR... This nex-5N beats both, and is a lot smaller. The e-mount takes any lens... low light performance is really impressive too.
If your looking for something to shoot with that's cheaper than the canon 5D mark II, the 5N or the Panasonic GH2 are your best options now.
Touch screen LCD is cool too...

Bought this camera and the novoflex Leica adapter to use my Leica M Mount compatible lenses. It took less than 5 minutes to get use to focus peaking and manual assist focusing. Once you get used to that, you can take great photos and take advantage of your leica glass w/o having to step up to an M9. I tried using M4/3 cameras in the same capacity, but the APS-C sensor in the Sony give much better results. Additionally, the high ISO is very good and you can use lenses like the Voigtlander 15mm without any bad side effects like on the M9. Highly recommended. Hope to try the OLED viewfinder when it is available online.

I do really like this camera and as a regular user of full frame SLRs and larger bodied cameras I have been waiting for a decent compact and this truly works. With the 16mm pancake lens this becomes a take "anywhere" compact where even the small bodied SLR was uncomfortable taking. I can't image not having the adjustable screen nor having a smaller sensor for high ISO.
Let me also point out some of the major negatives. First and foremost is the lack of connections for a shutter release remote, hot-shoe and any way to connect a pocket wizard to the camera. Second the button for the movie record is in a horrible place always getting bumped continually filming footage of my feet as I walk down the sidewalk. Third even though the body feels solid I truly wish it was built tough like the old yellow weather proof Walkmans Sony made. Fourth it would be nice if the shutter was silent. Finally the menus are still cumbersome and there is a delay in bringing it back to life.

Comments about Sony Alpha NEX-5N Digital Camera (Body Only):
Like many I own a DSLR that I love. However I find that I don't take it many places, even if I want nice pictures, because of its size. My kit takes most of a backpack to carry! Enter the NEX. I hated the idea of owning a point and shoot again, I was just never satisfied with the images. The NEX has been a sweet way to get really nice shots in an amazingly portable package. I can throw the NEX into a bag or even a jacket pocket and when I pull it out I don't feel like I'm drawing so much attention from people around me. Its a great way to capture high quality, artistic memories without the hassle of the DSLR. Yes, I still use my DSLR when I want top notch image quality or plan a trip specifically to use it, but the NEX has been just as good and so fun to use.
Things that are great:
Size and weight.
Style
The Image quality of the new NEX 5n is DEFINITELY better than the older NEX 5. I liked the old ones, but the newest one has some improvements that really blow me away in terms of image quality, sharpness, much better color. Lens correction, etc.
Cons:
The only thing that I haven't been happy with is the buffer size for high speed shooting. The NEX shoots 10 frames per second!! Which is awesome, however, it gets really laggy after the first 5 frames or so.
As a note, some people find the lack of lenses a negative. However, you can mount any lens from any manufacture on here. Sony has a great way of letting you manually focus accurately and easily. I personally don't mind the lens line up they have (even though more are coming) just because I wanted this to be a not complicated or bulky system. So, its what you're in need of.
