Canon's PowerShot SX40 HS Digital Camera raises the bar for optical zoom lenses--way, way up. This, ladies and gentlemen, is a 35x, 24-840mm equivalent, zoom lens, taking you from a true wide-angle to an ultra telephoto suitable for wildlife and sports photography and, who knows, maybe even pictures of the stars (just kidding about the astronomy pix, kids). And it comes with Canon's Optical Image Stabilizer so you'll be able to capture great shots even at super telephoto focal lengths without unseemly camera shake. A Zoom Framing Assist makes it easy to follow a moving subject, even using the super telephoto.
The lens uses a double-sided aspherical glass-molded lens, an ultra-high refraction index lens, enhanced negative refractive power, and UD glass to correct wide-angle distortion and suppress chromatic aberration. With the 12.1MP CMOS sensor, you'll get high resolution pictures, whether you're shooting landscapes, pictures of the kids, or those 2 blue herons on the other side of the lake.
The high resolution 2.7" Vari-Angle display screen makes it easy to frame and play back your photos and video--that's right, you also get gorgeous 1080p full HD video, which can be shot using image stabilization and full zoom, and, with stereo sound. The Super Slow Motion Movie function lets you see everything in really, really slooooow motion. There's also Advanced Smart AUTO, which recognizes and sets optimal settings for 32 pre-defined shooting situations. Canon's proprietary DIGIC 5 Image Processor delivers faster, more accurate noise reduction for better image quality, even at high ISO ratings. This little beauty is ready to go out and play.

I am not a professional photographer but love taking photos. I had an old Olympus for many years and didn't want to give up because it took such great pictures and had a wonderful zoom. When the old one finally died I had no choice but to go looking for a new digital camera, my prerequisites were something that was easy to use, comfortable for me to hold, a great zoom, and image stabalization, and of course a camera that took great pictures!
I read lots of reviews online before going to the store to check the camera out in person. After looking at similar cameras with all the things I wanted I found that the Cannon Power Shot SX40HS was the most comfortable to hold and seemed to have all of the things I wanted.
I bought the camera while I was in New York on a weekend vacation and started shooting photos immediately. It was not only easy to figure out but the zoom was amazing. The proof of course was in the actual pictures, when I got home and opened them on my computer I couldn't believe the clarity.
I am thrilled with my purchase!

The Canon SX40 has a new limit on ISO even in Full Manual Mode. The SX30 did not. The user cannot override this limit. The SX40 does NOT have "Full Manual Control."This has caused me some severe problems in trying to take the nighttime time-lapse photos of Monterey Bay Harbor that I have been doing for the last two years. I have recently posted a video on YouTube that I made about the problems of limited ISO I encountered in trying to take those nighttime, time-lapse photos of Monterey Bay Harbor. The link for that is shown below.YouTube - Canon SX40 ISO limits time-lapse night shots.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncILazaR18g&hd=1The Canon SX40 will not let you to take very low-light time-lapse photographs at anything higher than ISO 100 if the shutter speed falls below 1.3 seconds. Yet the camera freely allows using an ISO 3200 when shooting at shutter speeds above that 1.3 second limit. Putting an arbitrary limit on that in Full Manual Mode is unconscionable.Canon continues to advertise the SX40 as, "For more advanced users, the PowerShot SX40 HS offers the complete flexibility of full manual control." No it does NOT offer the user full manual control! Falsely saying that it does is even more unconscionable. The limitation is, in my estimation, simply a marketing ploy. It reduces the overall percentage of "bad" photos in a camera that is being marketed as taking only remarkably "good" photos. It is simply corporate image posturing. If Canon wants to do that in Auto mode, then fine. If it sells more cameras, then great. But not in Manual mode. There is no justifiable technical reason for it to be there in Full Manual Mode. This limit does not "protect" either the sensor or the camera. High ISO is essentially (simplified, obviously) created by amplifiers inside the camera's electronic processor after the image has been taken. Setting the camera at a high ISO does not make the sensor itself more "sensitive." It does not damage the camera. For almost 200 years now a camera has been first and foremost a scientific instrument, just like a telescope or a microscope. It gathers light through a lens and creates photographs. You are free to use that scientific instrument in any legitimate way you choose, for work, for play, for study or just for curiosity. It is your free choice. If it is entertaining to you, so much the better. But entertainment is not the primary function of a scientific instrument. It is supposed to do a job. When it can't do that job - fully - because you put arbitrary limits on it, then you have created - by definition - a "toy."Imagine any other scientific instrument marketed this way? Imagine a microscope that filtered out all images of germs, "because images of germs bother most people." It would be considered absurd, but yet with a scientific instrument like a camera, apparently it is not? Well, I don't agree. This limitation on the ISO in Full Manual Mode is ethically unconscionable and technically indefensible for any camera of this caliber and price range. Especially without a clear consumer warning from Canon before purchase, and so far there has been none at all. Therefore I would like to add as a "con" the arbitrary limit Canon has put on the ISO in Full Manual Mode.In the meantime, I hope Canon realizes the mistake in judgment and will upgrade the firmware of the SX40 to make it the full quality camera that it should have been all along, and one that consumers have a right to expect from a company of the high stature such as Canon has always been.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SX40 HS Digital Camera:
I have a Canon G9 and a G10 which are great luxury point/shoots, but I wanted more zoom. The G series zoom capabilities are limited. I almost bought a Canon T2 but the idea of lugging around a bunch of bulky lens sounded terrible. I knew later on I would stop taking it with me. The SX-40 is the perfect fit. The zoom is fantastic and the feature rich platform makes it an incredible camera, especially for the price. Don't hesitate, just buy it!

Just bought this camera and love it. I haven't watched the instructional DVD yet, but I took the camera to my son's baseball tournement and took lots of pictures. The color and clarity were amazing. I emailed the pictures to other team parents and the next day, everyone kept asking me what kind of camera I had. They loved the picture quality.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SX40 HS Digital Camera:
Great all around camera, the long zoom, and the 24mm equivalent wide angle are great. Beside the very reasonable cost compared to DSLRs, the range of the lens is also really great. A DSLR telephoto with this range would be very large, heavy and expensive.
Have had it several weeks, took it hiking, exploring around LA, and also got shots of the recent eclipse (with solar filter).
Although this is the most expensive camera I've owned yet, it's not to the level that I won't take it out to actually use it.
The original camera firmware functionality is just fine, good balance of simplicity and still some advanced features (it does 3 level bracketing for example). CHDK works with it also adding more features that I have figured out yet.
The Li-ion battery life seems good, it lasted a day or more of hiking shooting anything I noticed, and many eclipse shots, I think I got about 850 shots on one charge. Carrying a second battery is not a big deal, pretty small, about size of a large matchbook. People may complain about wanting it to use standard AAs, but not a problem for me. Camera would be larger and heavier with AAs.

I was looking for a great zoom for wildlife that could handle the lighting without changing lenses. Also, I wanted Hi-def video to include in my slideshows and movies. I wanted all this at a reasonable price and was user friendly. I am not a professional photographer - and I am very happy with what I am getting out of the PowerShot SX40 HS digital camera by Canon.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SX40 HS Digital Camera:
I did a ton of research before buying this camera. I looked at all the competitors. The only mega zoom that came close was the Nikon P510. The Nikon has a bigger and higher resolution LCD, GPS, and a larger zoom. While all these little bells and whistles are nice to show off to anyone who might show an interest at your kids next soccer game, I'll personally stick with the reason I'm purchasing a camera like this. I'm buying this camera for the zoom and photo/video quality. The bottom line is you simply won't find another mega zoom in this catagory that will match the Canon SX40 HS for photo/video quality. Nuff Said!!!

Comments about Canon PowerShot SX40 HS Digital Camera:
This camera has amazing zoom capabilities and far surpasses my expectations. The 35X optical zoom (35mm equiv. of 840mm) is excellent, but what really impresses is the additional 4X digital zoom which gives you a total of 140X combined zoom.
The 140X zoom is hard to hold by hand but the Image Stabilization really does a terrific job in giving an excellent photo.
I have been taking photos of a Bald Eagle nest from a 1/4-mile away and photo buffs with much more expensive cameras and long lenses are impressed with the image quality at that distance. On another occasion I was taking a series of photos of a farm 4 and a 1/4-of a mile away in a valley from a high elevation in a state park. By eye you could not recognize anything but at the full 140X zoom you could read the name of the farm on their water tower. Very impressive.

We use the SX40 for both stills and video work. Excellent quality, easy to use in all areas!
About the only disadvantages are it does not shoot RAW files and the full HD video is limited to 24 fps. I'd like to be able to shoot HD with 60fps. That being said, the jpg quality is great. The video quality is very good too, just wish it could shoot at a higher fps rate. The image stabilization is great when the telephoto is extended and really useful for video.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SX40 HS Digital Camera:
I have only had this camera for a month and am still exploring the features. So far, I like it.Zoom: Better than what I had (by almost 3x), so can capture some better shots. I read somewhere to turn off the digital zoom to reduce noise. So far satisfied.Continuous Shooting: Advertised with 8-10fps. I haven't found this to be true, but I can't find the setting for it so I'm a little frustrated. My previous camera was easier. Any tips?Intuitive settings: This is super easy to operate and works very similarly to my other PowerShot.Shooting features: I'm so glad for the sport/action feature. I use this regularly for action other than sports. Pictures are clear - less blurry. I also really like the fish-eye effect - makes really cool action shots.I haven't tried some of the more advanced features yet, but so far so good.

I'm fortunate to have a Canon 50d & 5d and a number of excellent Canon lenses. But there are some time when you simply do not want to haul all that gear with you either because it is a lot take on a plane or a lot to risk in places where you are not sure you can keep it all secure, like a trip to Mexico and Zimbabwe. But you still want great pictures. This is the camera to do that. The wedding in Mexico produced some great pictures and I'm hoping for the same thing in Zimbabwe. Plus, the telephoto zoom is amazing and I can't wait to use it with wildlife in Africa.

This camera is great for photographing people, nature, wildlife, and far away objects. It's super zoom can take excellent clear shots of the moon too. The Handheld function is useful for night scenes with lights. The super vivid mode makes the colors really vibrant. The full HD videos are fantastic when you shoot in super vivid mode.
The ends of the camera hood may show when you are panning while shooting movies.
I've not figured out how to use the Shortcut button even with the help of the manual.

Comments about Canon PowerShot SX40 HS Digital Camera:
I love taking pictures and now that I have an 11-month old Chocolate Lab, I wanted something to replace my regular 33mm camera and what I call a "beginner digital" camera. The Canon PowerShot SX40 takes beautiful pictures with a minimal amount of time required to learn about the camera. It has nice features and is light-weight. The zoom feature is remarkable - you can actually see fuzz on someone's sweater. The clarity and resolution is very nice for making enlargements too. I think this is a perfect camera for someone like myself, a novice that appreciates great pictures.
