The Nikon 1 J1 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 10mm WA/10-30mm Zoom Lens (Silver) is a compact and easily portable digital camera with both a 10mm f/2.8 Wide Angle and a 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6 VR Zoom Lens included. The mirrorless design allows the camera to be extra-small and lightweight, while still retaining all of the best qualities of a mirrored model. Featuring a CX-Format High-Speed AF CMOS Sensor and an EXPEED 3 dual image processor, this small device packs some punch. The sensor enables great photos even in low light, while the EXPEED 3 enables superior system performance, high-speed processing, advanced phase detection autofocus and high-speed data transfer rates.
The included 10mm f/2.8 CX-format single focal length wide angle lens (27mm 35mm equivalent) is the most compact of the 1 NIKKOR lens system. Great for producing shallow depth of field looks with dreamy backgrounds, it's also ideal for capturing those low light shots with great clarity and detail. The lens applies 2 aspherical lens elements to ensure high image quality--even at the widest aperture settings. Aspherical elements eliminate the problem of coma and other kinds of lens aberration, are useful in correcting the distortion in wide-angle lenses, and also contribute to a lighter, more compact lens design. The 10mm wide angle gives you a natural perspective for shooting beautiful landscapes at any time of the day or night. Nikon's Rear Focusing (RF) system divides the lens elements into specific groups, with only the rear group moving or focusing. This makes for smoother, faster autofocusing. The multilayer Super Integrated Coating helps reduce ghost and flare to a negligible level, and also assists in the creation of superior color balance and reproduction. This lens features a maximum angle of view of 77°, a minimum focus distance of 0.66' (0.2 m), and a filter size of 40.5mm.
The included 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6 VR zoom lens features up to 3x magnification and a silent stepping AF motor (STM). It has image stabilization (VR II) to combat the effects of camera shake. The angle of view ranges from 29° 40" to 77°. The lens's minimum focus distance is 0.66' (0.2 m), and the filter size is 40.5mm. The 10-30mm is a versatile lens for applications ranging from wide-angle to tight portrait shots, and applies 3 aspherical lens elements to ensure high image quality, even at the widest aperture settings. The 10-30mm zoom range enables excellent capture of fine detail, even in far-away shots. Internal Focusing / IF technology enables more compact, lightweight construction, as well as a closer focusing distance. A multi-layer lens coating helps reduce ghost and flare to a negligible level.
The J1 camera has an interchangeable lens system, allowing you to select from 3 optional 1 NIKKOR lenses in addition to the included one. There's even a lens designed specifically for movie filming. Swapping lenses is quick and easy, enabling you to stay at-the-ready at all times. Aside from the 10mm and 10-30mm focal lengths of the included lenses, you may choose a length of 30-110mm telephoto.
A highly responsive autofocus and a fast shooting speed ensure that you never miss a moment. You get 10 fps continuous shooting speed in autofocus mode, so your camera won't lag behind the action. An impressive 73 point AF array gives you amazing clarity, even when capturing fast-moving subjects. A large 3.0" LCD color screen features a 460k-dot resolution and an anti-glare coating for easy viewing, even in bright sunlight.
Enjoy one-touch Full HD (1080p) movie record mode-and the ability to capture still images while recording! Add a slow-motion effect to make your imaging more dramatic. Experience the Motion Snapshot One-Touch Photo Animation Experience to bring your photos to life. This feature essentially creates a picture slideshow where there would otherwise be merely a single image. Thanks to Smart Photo Selector, the J1 chooses the best of the images you've taken, so all you have to focus on is getting the shot you want. Let the camera do the work for you while you do what you love and stay in the moment. Enjoy easy access to advanced features with a menu that is easy to follow, no matter how much photography experience you've had.

Comments about Nikon 1 J1 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 10mm WA/10-30mm Zoom Lens (Silver):
I own a Canon SLR and a decent collection of lenses, but sometimes that's too much bulk to lug around, especially for family outings where I want some nice photos but don't want to turn the event into a photo shoot. For occasions like this, I had been using compact cameras, but the image quality always comes up a bit short.
Enter the Nikon J1- it performs like an SLR but is only slightly larger than a compact. The image quality is fantastic for such a small sensor- it isn't quite up to the level of my SLR, but it is very, very good. High ISO photos are surprisingly usable- ISO 3200 is not as good as my SLR, but it isn't that far off, either. Which is amazing given the size of the sensor in this. I'm not sure that the high ISO photos would stand up to extensive pixel-peeping, but for 4x6 prints or use in a digital frame, they look good. Low ISO photos look great at any size. The camera focuses fast and RAW performance is good. The video is great and I love that the camera lets you shoot stills during video without pausing the video.
Downsides- the manual controls are all there, but hard to get to. Nikon is obviously targeting novice photographers with this product, which is fine, but the images are so good that more advanced photographers would like it, too. It's still a bit bulkier than I had hoped- I suppose this isn't really a downside and image quality would suffer if it was smaller, so it's a tradeoff I'm willing to accept.
This would be a fantastic camera for a casual photographer looking to get photos of kids and family events- I think that's the market that Nikon is after and they nailed it. It's also a great camera for more advanced photographers looking to travel light as long as you can put up with its quirks. I can, so I'm very, very happy with this purchase.
