The Nikon 1 J1 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 10-30mm / 30-110mm Lens (Red) is a compact and easily portable digital camera with both a 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6 VR Zoom Lens and a 30-110mm f/3.8-5.6 telephoto lens included. The mirrorless design allows the camera to be extra-small and lightweight, while still retaining all of the best qualities of a mirrored model. Featuring a 10.1 MP CX-Format High-Speed AF CMOS Sensor and an EXPEED 3 dual image processor, this small device packs some punch. The sensor enables great photos even in low light, while the EXPEED 3 enables superior system performance, high-speed processing, advanced phase detection autofocus and high-speed data transfer rates.
The included 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6 VR zoom lens features up to 3x magnification and a silent stepping AF motor (STM). It has image stabilization (VR II) to combat the effects of camera shake. The angle of view ranges from 29° 40" to 77°. The lens's minimum focus distance is 0.66' (0.2m), and the filter size is 40.5mm. The 10-30 mm is a versatile lens for applications ranging from wide-angle to tight portrait shots, and applies 3 aspherical lens elements to ensure high image quality, even at the widest aperture settings. The 10-30mm zoom range enables excellent capture of fine detail, even in far-away shots. Internal Focusing / IF technology enables more compact, lightweight construction, as well as a closer focusing distance. A multi-layer lens coating helps reduce ghost and flare to a negligible level.
The included 30-110mm f/3.8-5.6 telephoto lens (81-297mm 35mm equivalent) works great for isolating subjects from their backgrounds with clarity, and also has Internal Focusing / IF to maintain compactness of size--even when using the zoom. It also has image stabilization (VR II) to combat the effects of camera shake. Its telephoto coverage makes it great for a wide array of scene types, from sports to portraits. Enjoy superior sharpness and color correction-even at the widest aperture. Your photos will be crystal clear and sharp, even those taken from far away. Capture sweeping vistas with the wide depth of field. The J1 camera has an interchangeable lens system, allowing you to select from 3 optional 1 NIKKOR lenses in addition to the included one. There's even a lens designed specifically for movie filming. Swapping lenses is quick and easy, enabling you to stay at-the-ready at all times. Aside from the 10-30 and 30-110 mm focal lengths of the included lenses, you may choose a single focal length of 10 mm or a 10-100 mm zoom.

I was looking for a small camera size, but with dslr type quality of photos and that is what I found with the Nikon 1. I haven't had it long, but so far it's picture quality is crisp and clear. I work on plays and was even able to get some great stage shots, as well as having the option to take video and pictures while recording the video. So far I like it very much.

I am an avid concert goer and was looking for a camera specifically for that. Well, I am happy to say I got what I was looking for. The last show I attended was probably the worst lighting conditions I have ever faced and my pics were amazing. I used the 10-30mm lens and was front row. The continuous shot feature was extremely helpful, the band I saw moves around A LOT! I also tried out the video and took pics during the video recording and the clarity of the video was amazing, and the still shots never interfered with the video. I am happy to say that another great feature was that I didn't have to use the flash to get great shots which made it less distracting for the band.
The next week, I attached the 30-110mm lens and took it to the off leash dog park with my son and 2 dogs. Again, I was thoroughly impressed with the camera's performance and the clarity of the shots considering I was trying to capture shots of a five year old and 2 excited sheppard mixes running around. I am still trying to figure out some of the features, I seem to have to set the timer before every shot if I want to do timed shots which is annoying, and I haven't figured out whether I can have continuous shots on a timer, but all and all I am very pleased! 2 thumbs and 2 big toes up!

Color saturation is unbelievable. The colors really pop. The stabilization system is phenominal. The 110mm zoom is adequate. It is user friendly and easy to understand. The user's manual is better than most. I like being able to use screw-on filters. We're very happy with this camera. Great job, Nikon!

The J1 has been eye-opening in many ways. As someone who's shot with many of Nikon's DSLRs, I was surprised that such a compact sensor could give images this good. Obviously, not as noise-free as a D3s, but FAR better than any of the Coolpix cameras. The kit lenses (10-30mm and 30-110mm) are both very sharp corner to corner. No signs of lateral CA and distortion is kept under good control. Some of the benefits on non-retrofocus lens designs!
As an alternativ to my DSLRs, it's been a pleasure to use for family outings, where the bulk and weight of even a D200 + lens is more than I want to deal with. The video is wonderful for capturing family moments, and th flicker reduction feature seems to do its job well. Not the greatest video camera by any means, but for hobby/amateur use, the video looks wonderful at 1080/30p on my 46" TV!
I would highly recommend this camera to anyone who wants the compactness and simplicity of a point and shoot, with the option of manual exposure mode available, and who wants a step up in terms of sensor performance from a point and shoot.

A great camera for travelling if you want to go light, not take all your collection of bodies and lenses and still be able to use an SLR. Obviously not as flexible as my Canons with the collection of lenses but non the less a very good camera. The videos are very good providing you use a tripod. Overall very sharp pix with good color balance. Love it's size, great set of lenses and it's ability to shoot a mixture of still and video.
