Nikon presents their Nikon 1 V1 Mirrorless Digital Camera, outfitted with a 10-30mm lens. Well aware that many shooters want versatility without the bulk and weight of a DSLR, the famed imaging company has thrown its hat into the ring with this lightweight, interchangeable lens digital camera. This bundle gives the user both the V1 body and a 10-30mm lens to get started. From day one, 10.1Mp photos can be shot and 1080/60i HD video can be captured.
At its heart the V1 has a 13.2 x 8.8 CMOS sensor which uses Nikon's CX image sensor format. Helping to capture stunningly detailed and vibrant footage would be the EXPEED 3 with dual image processors. Aside from quickly transferring information to the SD/SDHC or SDXC card being recorded to, EXPEED 3 enables phase detection autofocus.
The 10-30mm lens, along with the other compatible 1 NIKKOR lenses mount to the camera's Nikon 1 mount. No matter what the desired focal length, the V1 captures stills in JPEG and RAW and video in the MOV format, with H.264/MPEG-4 compression. Choices for enhancing both capture modes include adding the optional external ME-1 stereo microphone and using the optional SB-N5 Speedlight in the i-TTL hot shoe.
Integrated tools include a 3.0" LCD display and a 100% view electronic viewfinder, with diopter adjustments. Command and features buttons also work to ensure user-friendliness. Internally, the impressive Advanced hybrid AF delivers 10 frames-per-second capture in autofocus mode and 60fps in manual mode, ensuring a clear shot of moving targets. Whether it's ponies galloping in the surf or an active toddler, Nikon has gone to great lengths to ensure the moment will be captured with clarity. Making this possible is a combination of contrast and focal plane phase detect autofocus, with an incredible 73 point AF array.
Another highlight, Motion Snapshot, captures a succession of images with a just one click. Low light capabilities with a wide ISO range of 100-3200 and 6400, and Smart Photo Selector, which lets the camera handle the settings, also expand the creative possibilities of the V1. With these features, a lightweight and compact body, and interchangeable lenses, the possibilities are endless.
Find the Detail Using 10-30mm Zoom Range: Pick Your Focus PointFrame that wonderful ocean shot or sun setting over the bridge. A superior all-around lens, the 10-30mm commands sharp focus with excellent delivery of details in images taken far away. Versatility is yours as you frame wide camera angles, just the way you like or smoothly zoom out until you find exactly the right balance of details to include in your shot
Pull it Closer: Shoot from AfarUse the full reach of the 10-30mm and bring subjects close. For when you cannot get right up to the action, a 30mm zoom may be just right. Hone in on your subject and hit the shutter. Even at this magnification your photos come out crystal clear and sharp with vibration reduction (VR II)
Vibration ReductionThis innovative VR system minimizes image blur caused by camera shake, and offers the equivalent of shooting at a shutter speed three stops (eight times) faster. It allows handheld shooting at dusk, at night, and even in poorly lit interiors. The lens' VR system also detects automatically when the photographer pans - no special mode is required
Aspherical Lens ElementAspherical lenses virtually eliminate the problem of coma and other types of lens aberration - even when used at the widest aperture. They are particularly useful in correcting the distortion in wide-angle lenses. In addition, use of aspherical lenses contributes to a lighter and smaller lens design
Nikon Super Integrated CoatingTo enhance the performance of its optical lens elements, Nikon employs an exclusive multilayer lens coating that helps reduce ghost and flare to a negligible level. Nikon Super Integrated Coating achieves a number of objectives, including minimized reflection in the wider wavelength range and superior color balance and reproduction
Internal FocusingImagine being able to focus a lens without it changing in size. Nikon's IF technology enables just that. All internal optical movement is limited to the interior of the nonextending lens barrel. This allows for a more compact, lightweight construction as well as a closer focusing distance

I have had the V1 for a week and it has barely left my hands. As a Pro, I got this camera for my more casual shooting needs. It delivered. Top notch focusing and shutter responsiveness Does this camera produce the sharpest images or best ISO performance? No. But can it capture the moments that other camera can't? Yes! This is also a well built solid camera with good ergonomics. The vibration reduction is quite impressive on this camera. Hand held shots at 1/15 of a second are pretty sharp.

I recently purchased this camera to replace my D80 which fell victim to my hardwood floor. As I am a long time Nikon User I was very excited to get my hands on the V1. I wanted SLR speed, quality and features without the size.
In my first week with the camera I found the camera shutter speed to be lacking in Auto Mode. I deleted a Cray Super computer worth of blurry photos that were taken in "average" lighting. With 3 kids constantly on the move I need a very responsive camera that adjusts quickly to varying conditions. This camera doesn't accomplish that. I am hoping that when the "Speed Light" gets released for an extra $149 that it will improve the performance. Don't even think of buying this unless you purchase the "Speed Light". You must have the flash. I wish they didn't ship this camera until the Speed Light was ready. Just saying.....

I use a digital SLR while at home, but for travel this is an extremely versatile and good camera. The whole system is very compact and flexible that 90% of the time I don't need the extra weight and bulk of a huge zoom lens.

Comments about Nikon 1 V1 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 10-30mm Lens (Black):
This is an all-around excellent camera. My other camera is a Canon 5D MkII and the quality of the photographs and video of the Nikon 1 V1 rivals that of my full-size DSLR. The slow motion video capabilities at 400fps and 1200fps are extraordinary for a camera in this price range. My one complaint is that the 10-30mm lens has manual zoom but not manual focus.

The first time I was handed the camera by a dealer the dial got moved to 1/2 way between video and still. This remains a problem. I have to check every time I pull the thing out of my bag to make sure the dial hasn't moved. It needs to be redesigned or have a lock feature.
The dial to rotate through images taken could stand to be firmer - you look at it wrong and you're on the next image.
Other than those design issues, I love the camera.

My Nikon 1 V1 is great. It's small and very portable, yet takes photos like a heavy duty camera. I had it with me on vacation & took fantastic shots! Have already recommended the V1 to several friends and people we met during our travels. Thank you.

Pro new snapper.
Great in available light with the 10mm f2.8 lens.
Autofocus is better than any small (and many SLRs) i have tried.
Body is well built and feels great to hold.
The additional speedlight gives great bounce, avoiding the over harsh flash usually associated with small cameras and flash guns.
30-110 mm lens zoom is a little stiff
wish it had manual dials for shutter and aperture like the fujix100 or canon G12

Comments about Nikon 1 V1 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 10-30mm Lens (Black):
This is a small well made interchangeable lens camera that delivers consistently good images. Exposure, focus and color are spot on. Low light not as good as I expected, but video is the best I've had yet. Overall package is great for a camera of this size. A really fun camera to use since it does most of the thinking for you and you sit back and enjoy superb results.

An optional i-TTL flash apparently can be used as an off-camera slave flash.
Automated and programmed features (exposure mode/scene auto selector, No. frames per second, shutter type, vibration reduction, image quality as examples) have matured through the years on Nikon DSLR cameras and are awesome on the Nikon V1.

I brought this camera to have a small to take to family/kiddie event so would not have to bring the 300s or 7000. I absolutely needed a camera without noticable shutter lag. I have the P7000 which is good...the V1 is much better! No shutter lag and in fact you can do high speed multiple frames per second. great for photographing sports or kids.

Comments about Nikon 1 V1 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 10-30mm Lens (Black):
Took this camera to Disney for both video and still photos. It did an excellent job of both. I would recommend purchasing the flash with the camera. The "smart photo selector" does an excellent job of eliminating the need for a tripod in low light but at times I wished for a flash. Looking forward to using it at Christmas. I purchased 2 - 32 GB x133 SD cards for the camera- plenty of memory for over 1000 images including 25-30 min of video. No 5 stars due to very sensitive photo selector dial - very easy to change and not realize it and no ability to force the camera into viewfinder only or screen/monitor mode.

Comments about Nikon 1 V1 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 10-30mm Lens (Black):
This camera surprised me in several ways. First, the quality of the pictures is better than expected and doesn´t show any minor weak points. Secondly I love the possibility to review my pictures in the bright viewfinder. The handling using the menu is easy and goes fast. I also like the external flash, because it´s stronger than a build-in of that class, without using extra batteries. Also the V1 is not to small, not to big and finally not to lightweighted.

Comments about Nikon 1 V1 Mirrorless Digital Camera with 10-30mm Lens (Black):
This is, to my mind, a ground-breaking camera. By taking a holistic approach, dismissing the expectation that a larger sensor was absolutely needed, but instead building the entire system to optimize image quality, size, lens size and ISO performance, Nikon has produced a fun camera that takes great images and is easy to keep with you. If you can get over the dpreview flamers, this is a solidly build piece of technology that delivers. And it has superb HD video.

If you have used a DSLR and take a little time to learn how to use the Nikon 1 V1 you will be very impressed with the outcome. I have shot everything without a flash and have had no problems. I don't shoot in auto mode and use the different features the camera has to offer to produce the outcome I want. Slow motion video is fun to play with. The camera has more features than many full size DSLR's and its all packed into a small body. I have a Nikon D300 and a Canon S90 and this camera is with me all the time now. Don't be fooled by the smaller sensor and 10MP. Nikon did a great job in the design.

We have actively used D100 and D70s these past few years to great results, but were tired of lugging the big bag around and the heavy camera. A 10-day backpacking trip made this issue very evident when we just couldn't pack the "good" camera. That plus having to have a separate video camera that was recently lost meant it was time to rethink what gear we needed. Some research in October led to this Nikon 1 being perhaps the perfect solution - one device, amazing quality, small form factor, and finally the world of video and still photography combined with an easy to use interface for the Prosumer or Consumer person. We LOVE IT.
