Bursting at the seams with features and functions, the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GX1 Digital Camera (Body Only, Black) wants to take what you think you know about Micro Four Thirds shooting, and turn it on its ear. The GX1 camera body boasts a number of built-in capabilities, not to mention compatibility with numerous lenses, including a 3D interchangeable lens. Additionally, in-camera editing and various other modes for producing professional-looking pictures, enhance the face value of this remarkable little machine.
The GX1 embodies the hallmarks of a Micro Four Thirds camera - a compact body (thanks to its mirror-less design), stellar resolution with the 16.0Mp Live MOS Sensor, and the aforementioned multiple lens compatibility with LUMIX G and Leica DG lenses. Additionally, the Venus Engine provides for fast processing of files, noise reduction, and smooth operation of the camera's many modes. The GX1 also boasts a sleek design with easy to operate dials and buttons. Other design considerations include the 3.0" touch enabled LCD, the built-in flash, and the right-side grip.
The shooting functions of the GX1 are centered around the ultra high-speed, ultra-precise autofocus options. They allow you to take accurate, in-focus photos, without having to manually focus, with an emphasis on motion photography. This is evidenced with the 0.09 second Light Speed AF which is achieved by reducing the detection time for focusing by syncing the lens and the sensor at 120 frames per second. High-precision Contrast AF grants high accuracy, even when shooting at small F value, because focusing is controlled by the image sensor. Additionally, you can use Full-area Focusing with Touch AF, which allows you to set focus on any point in the field of view using the touch screen LCD. Other AF features include Pinpoint AF options, Touch AF in video recording, a flexible AF/MF mode button on the camera, and high-speed consecutive shooting.
Like its predecessors in the Micro Four Thirds genre, the GX1 also captures high def video. Boasting 1920 x 1080 HD video in the AVCHD (MPEG4/H.264) format, the camera produces movies that look great on HDTVs, HD monitors, and the like. Within the video features the camera can do a number of useful, fun, and creative things. One such example is its ability to capture 11.5Mp stills from video. Others include high quality sound with the Dolby Digital Stereo Creator, Touch AF for video recording, multiple creative controls and photo style options - including miniature effect, and Intelligent Auto Mode, which takes the guesswork out of capturing video. Of course, the in-camera editing options and the included software allow for manipulation, sharing, and more.
Numerous other features give you a creative edge when shooting with the GX1. These in-camera features and functions help you take normal snapshots and turn them into unique works of art! The aforementioned Creative Control mode works with still photos as well as video. Enjoy the options within this feature, including Expressive, for a pop art style, Retro, for the appearance of a tarnished photo, Sepia, for an antique look, and Toy Effect, which creates the same type of vignetting produced by a toy camera. Other options are available with this feature too. Additional functions of the camera include Touch Defocus Control, for artful focusing, and Photo Style, for manually choosing from 6 color types, among others.
Flow of the Dust Reduction System:1. Power off2. When the camera is turned on, the filter vibrates to shake off dirt and dust3. The dirt and dust adhere to the absorption part to prevent it from appearing in the sensor image

If you're a GF1 owner like me, and have been disappointed with each new GF release, then look no further than the GX1. This camera is almost everything I could ask for in an upgrade. It offers a new sensor, a quieter shutter, faster focusing, a better grip, full HD video recording w/stereo sound, better continuous shooting, and much improved high ISO results. The only thing really missing is an optical viewfinder.
Even if you're not a GF1 owner and you just want a high performing digital camera with manual controls, RAW shooting capabilities, and a relatively large sensor in a rangefinder style body, then this should rank high on your list of consideration.

Only 4 weeks old and a small bump shocked the camera enough that it will not power up. Sadly Panasonic wont cover it as it is considered as an external event and wants half the retail price to repair it. My jaw hit the ground.I have enjoyed the camera quite a bit but sadly I would have to classify it as highly shock prone after my experience. A light tumble may cost you $350. It cost me a write off of [$] since an exorbitant repair cost coupled with the manufacturers lack of empathy simply didn't buy brand loyalty from this customer. Its a shame too because I was well on my way to becoming fanboy. My advice if you own it: get a protective case. If you dont own it, pre-order the Olympus OM-D.

Comments about Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GX1 Digital Camera (Body Only, Black):
While I loved my Lumix LX5, I missed having the ability to use multiple lenses. The Lumix DMC-GX1 is not all that much larger, takes excellent photographs, and I can now use a zoom lens. I really like the size and functionality of the four thirds camera format and the GX1 in particular.

Comments about Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GX1 Digital Camera (Body Only, Black):
Foremost, I am very happy with the quality of the pictures it takes. Focusing is fast and accurate as is exposure measurement. The camera handles well despite its small size. It feels solid. I use the f1.7 lens indoors and rarely need the flash. When I do, the built in flash can be pointed up for a bounce flash to reduce shadows. I didn't get the PZ14-42 lens, instead, I bought the 14-140 zoom and I'm glad I did. I like the range and sharpness of this lens. I do not care for the bulk but it is not bad if you consider that at 140mm, it is equal to a 280 mm lens on a full frame 35mm camera. I use the range finder often. It works fine with my glasses on. Diopter is easy to adjust. The rangefinder is crisp and clear and it shows all the information the LCD shows. The rangefinder tilts so you can look down into it...great when using a tripod.
There is a thumbwheel that has 2 functions - 1. rotate to adjust something like shutter speed or f stop or exposure; 2. push to select another function. I find it is too easy to push and change selection while rotating the wheel. I do it less now that I've used it for a month. Also, I find that the buttons are not well de-bounced. So, it is easy to get 2 pushes when you are going for 1. True, I am nit picking here.
I do like and use the custom settings. For example, I select C2 on the top dial and both the meter and focus are set for point reading. If I select C1, I get the portrait setup I programmed in.
The camera comes with Silkypix software for processing raw files. I have grown to like it. I have not used other raw editors so I can't compare it to other software. I found it to be not intuitive to start out, but with a bit of practice I caught on.
The GX1 with pancake lens is small enough to fit in my jacket pocket and it takes pictures that I am very happy with. I agonized over whether to buy the GX1 or the Sony NEX7. I finally decided on the GX1 because of the size of both the camera and the lenses. I'll bet that Sony is a great camera, but I'm satisfied that the GX1 4/3 format is the right one for me.

Easy to carry when I don't want to lug the Canon 5d around, and still get great quality shots. Tried nearly all the small sensor P&S cams and wasted a lot of money on them. This one's a winner,

Comments about Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GX1 Digital Camera (Body Only, Black):
Well, I wasn't planning on upgrading so soon from my GF1, but unfortunate events occured, and I was left with a cracked screen. :(
The GX1 is a bit smaller, which is nice. However, this comes at a price - the battery is slimmer and runs out faster. I am still trying to adapt to the differences from the GF1. No more drive dial for quickly changing from single shot/bracket/timer (why?).
One thing I noticed immediately was how much faster this camera is compared to my beloved GF1. At least twice as fast!
I still use both cameras, and since I am intimate with the GF1, it's still my go-to workhorse. Transitioning to the GX1 is taking some time, but in time I feel that I will adapt to the changes and never look back.
Still, My GF1 is close to my heart.

I got the viewfinder, which I believe is absolutely necessary in bright sunlight. Like the modular concept. Getting used to the slightly different dial options. Nothing like reading the instruction manual.
Really like the feature that lets me know when I am parallel to the walls in a building.

Comments about Panasonic LUMIX DMC-GX1 Digital Camera (Body Only, Black):
I am new to more advanced cameras so I cannot offer much comparison to other mirrorless ILC or DSLRs. I bought the Lumix GX1 with the Panasonic 25mm f1.4 lens, which is excellent. The image quality and depth of field control is a huge leap forward as compared to compact cameras. The GX1 offers quick access to all the basic controls that are necessary for taking pictures, including aperture, shutter speed, ISO, WB, metering, etc. The autofocus is very fast and accurate. Overall, takes excellent pictures and gets the basic controls right. I would recommend this camera to a friend.

Street Photographers will love the GX1.
It's small, intuative and has fast reactions.
The body is beautifully built, and the IQ is great at all but the highest ISo settings (up tp ISO 6400)
I am a GF1 owner and would heartily recommend the GX1 as an upgrade to the GF1, or to all other photographers who want a high quality pocketable camera with interchangeable lens capability.
It is especially effective with the 20mm pancake and 7-14mm lenses.
