The GXR DIGITAL CAMERA w/ A16 24-85mm f/3.5-5.5 Lens Kit from Ricoh puts together this one of a kind digital camera system with an all-purpose lens to get you out and shooting immediately.
Unlike most digital cameras with interchangeable lenses, the GXR uses interchangeable units, each housing a lens, sensor and image processing engine. This allows each unit to be optimized so that lens and sensor work together seamlessly. The sealed units also prevent dust from reaching the sensor which can be a problem with other cameras where the sensor is exposed whilst a lens is being changed. Dust can be a nightmare when it comes to shooting digital. Ricoh's GXR mirrorless camera system makes dust worries obsolete, because the lens is never detached from the sensor. Instead, a Camera Unit slides into the GXR Body, the foundation of the system. The sensor, the lens, and image processor, completely enclosed, in each Unit.
This GXR kit comes bundled with a Camera Unit comprised of the A16 24-85mm f/3.5-5.5 lens, a 16.2MP CMOS sensor and the Smooth Imaging Engine IV processor.
The GXR body is the base of the entire system. Capable of accepting any of the Camera Units developed by Ricoh, the body maintains a point-and-shoot profile. Ricoh was able to keep the size of the system compact, while providing creative options for the shooter. One example would be the hot shoe, which allows for adding accessories such as a flash or viewfinder. The body also has a built-in flash and tripod mount for added flexibility.
When it comes to the nuts and bolts, the GXR Body looks pretty much like most compact cameras. A 3.0" LCD provides a generous platform for composing and reviewing shots or scrolling through the menu. An SD/SDHC memory card slot, battery slot for the rechargeable battery, and an ample supply of controls round out the exterior. The My Settings on the mode dial, and the My Settings box, allow the most used functions to be programmed for easy access.
The A16 Camera Unit's 24-85mm zoom lens (35mm equivalency) is ideal for day-to-day shooting as it ranges from true wide-angle to standard telephoto. At 24mm you can shoot expansive landscapes or all your friends gathered around the table, while at 85mm, you can bring distant objects a bit closer and capture unposed moments or shoot portraiture. The lens uses three aspherical elements that reduce distortion and provide excellent contrast across the entire frame. The 16.2MP sensor offers superior resolution in both photo and HD video mode as well as options like dynamic range compensation in which high contrast images are corrected in-camera to produce completely balanced photographs and scene modes which create unique images with effects like High Contrast, Toy Camera and Soft Focus. For more professional control, the A16 allows for both manual and multi-point autofocus and image capture in both JPG and RAW format.
