Hama 55mm Snap-On Rectangular Plastic Wide Angle Lens Hood with Cap
Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.
This plastic snap-on lens hood is designed for wide angle lenses with a focal lenght as wide as 24mm. Includes plastic hood cap.
Note: Not for lenses where the filter threads rotate, such as some zoom lenses.

I use these hoods on contax manual focus lenses. When I first got hold of one I thought it might be a bit toy town but after fitting it to a lens it becomes quite rigid and will offer a fair amount of front end protection as well as shade the light. A point to keep in mind is that some lenses are a bit to large diameter to fit the hood but the answer to that is to fit a filter where the hood will fit nicely.
