A standard zoom lens from a wide 28mm to a medium telephoto range of 80mm. The use of aspherical elements in the front group reduces the number of elements required, and the use of strong engineering plastic in the barrel makes the body light.

As an Semi-pro photographer I can afford very little pro equipment so I try to get the biggest bang for my buck when it comes to purchasing lenses. I destroyed my work horse 17-300 and needed a lens for a shoot I had coming up but didn't have a lot of money to spend on a lens and figured that the Tamron would be good enough for stills. After the shoot I took it out and was surprized at how fast it was and how sharp the images were. It is a little noisy but still a great lens for amature work a or a pro backup.

If you're a hobbyist and don't care about the sharpness or colors of your pictures, then this lens is fine for you. I use this with my Canon 350D and have for 1 year now. It's not very good at night, there's a lens creep, 90% of my pictures are not satisfactorily sharp, and the colors are very blah. It does not pick up colors as well as I wish it could - it has kind of a grayish tone.
I replaced it with a 50mm f/1.8 and was very satisfied. The results are tremendously different. Although the 50mm may not have zoom, I'd say it is a much better lens than this and it's definitely worth the extra $10 or so. The lens is much faster, the pictures are much clearer and the colors are definitely brighter. Also, it's a more hands-on lens.
I really would not recommend this lens unless you're just using your DSLR as a point-and-shoot. This was my only lens for 7 months and I was very unsatisfied.

Comments about Tamron Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto AF 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 Aspherical Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS:
Bought as a starter lens with my Canon 60D as I get into photography. Inexpensive lens so there is no need to highlight cons. You want a sharper picture or a faster lens pay $450+. For [$] you must understand that you won't have a L class lens for your Canon but what you do have is a great lens that you can pass down to people starting out in photography.

Here's the deal. This lens is pretty decent. Given that it only costs [$], it makes it an outstanding value. If you're anything beyond a novice photographer this isn't the lens for you, but it is perfect for a beginner to get in the game with minimal cost.I've had this lens for 2 weeks and I already looking to upgrade since this lens is no good in low light, but again, for the price paid it's well worth it and I will always have a spare "throwaway" lens on hand.Edges of pictures can be a little soft and it can be hard to focus. Auto Focus is pretty much useless 80% of the time, but I can live with that.Video looks great with this lens, better than stills IMO.

Bought this lense just to see how it is since the price was so low. The quality is great for the price, and works well as a mid range, standard lens if the kit lens isnt working out for you.

I bought this lens to photograph my son's sports! They both play basketball, run track and cross country so I needed a lens that would give me some zoom but capture the action as well! :) I love this lens and would recommend it to anyone! I have not put my original lens back on my camera since purchasing and using this lens. I read alot of reviews before I made this purchase and am very happy with my decision to go ahead with the purchase. I would also purchase again from B&H Photo! They were wonderful and quick to get my product to me so I could start capturing my son at basketball.

This was a gift for my daughter, as I used her camera in Israel and while I was there this particular lens cracked from the inside. It was unusual. I wanted to get her the same lens, and when I searched your name came up as a site. I went on-line, even phoned and talked with an agent and then ordered. [...]my daughter is very pleased with the product.

This lens works well for portraits!
I do agree with others that it is a little slow to focus in low light situations.
Also it is a little noisier than my last lens, but I will get used to it.

this is a good basic short telephoto lens, with an affordable price. What I like the best is how easy it is to use for a novice photographer like me.

This is not the fastest lens I've ever owned, but when an old kit lens broke during a very bad month, it was a great replacement. I actually like it and it stays on that camera for general purposes. It's autofocus is a little loud, and it's not as good as my 50mm at night, but I knew all that when I bought it. For the price it's definitely a good deal.

it is a good lens for a beginning or amateur photographer. tho it is loud when focusing it does focus well. it does require more light to focus than others (like i would know its my only one) this would lead to slow focusing in dark places. it has a great build quality.

I use the product for my photography business. I enjoy the product because of the low cost, but great value. Its a great in between lens. Its not quite a wide angle, but its also not a telephoto. I can get great portraits with this lens.

The lens doesn't always focus as well as it should. I just used it on a vacation and several of the "would be" nice pictures did not come out sharp. I got what I paid for. It's ok, I guess, for just everday shooting. It certainly has a good price. If I had, had a chance to use it before purchasing it, I would have bought a better lens.

I find this lense to be a great starter lense which is exactly what i used it for. Its very light weight which i like alot. The lense produces inconsistant output for me and has a tendancy to wash some colors out. Compared to a kit 18-55 lense, I would rather have the 18-55. BUT, if your just starting out, don't have alot to spend and want something that zooms a little further, this is the way to go

this is basically my main lens. its great for basic day to day shooting. i've owned it about a month and it has stood up to me so far! with amazing results.
the lens hood can be a little difficult getting on and off. AF motor is kind of loud. quite nose heavy on rebel models(like mine). wish it could get just a little wider

I recently got a Cannon EOS 30D and found my lens that was on my 35mm Cannon EOS wouldn't fit. Being a little strapped for cash, I was looking for the best product for the price range when I fell upon this product.
When I recieved my lens, I tried it out immediately, and I loved it! It's SUPER light-weight, and takes great shots. The view through it might be a little grainy, but you get past that when you see how great a job it does in the final outcome shot.
Overall, very affordable with great results and lightweight for easy travel!
