Sony ODS-D55U Overview

The Optical Disc Archive Drive Unit- Generation 1 from Sony can handle Optical Disc Cartridges (ODC) containing 12 discs. Once the driver software is installed in a PC, you can connect the Archive Drive Unit easily via the USB 3.0 interface and use ODC as a single large volume. This Archive Drive Unit accepts any type of data files just like other IT storage. With its longevity and reliability, this is an ideal solution for preserving AV contents.

Easy Setup
A standard USB 3.0 interface allows easy connection to either a Microsoft Windows PC or Apple Mac. Once driver software is installed on your computer, you can use the drive in the same way as a conventional external drive.
Note:
Driver software for Apple Mac will be available later.
Flexibility
Combined with portable cartridge media, this external drive unit can be used as external storage. Several cartridge types with different capacities are available to meet your production and long-term archival needs. In addition, the system accepts any type of data file and allows fast random access to data files.
Simple Management
Simple management software (Content Manager) is supplied with the drive for stand-alone usage. It has a simple graphical user interface to manage files easily and supports difficult tasks, including creating metadata and printing labels to improve the efficiency of your asset management.
Long Archival Life
Optical disc technology is extremely robust and average media life is estimated at around 50 years, which is substantially longer than other storage media on the market. It also guarantees intergenerational compatibility, which reduces future media consumption and the risk of data corruption associated with frequent data migration.
Low Total Cost of Ownership
To keep the cost of media asset management at a minimum, this system is made simple, affordable and eco-friendly. Moreover, with its longevity and intergenerational compatibility, coupled with low power consumption and a wide range of acceptable storage conditions, the Optical Disc Archive system greatly reduces the total cost of ownership.
High Reliability
By its nature, optical disc is highly durable and resilient in a wide range of environmental conditions. The simple structure and robustness of the media make it ideal for shelf archiving and material exchange. Furthermore, since this system does not require frequent data migration, you can protect your valuable data from corruption which can typically occur during data migration. The drive comes with functions such as Write-verify, Rollback and Recover File to offer improved reliability.
Open Platform
Sony makes the platform open and have established alliances with industry partners with a view to promoting further utilization of the technology and enhancing the system through collaboration and multi-sourcing of key components.
Eco-Friendly Design
The Optical Disc Archive system enables ever-increasing media asset management with minimal environmental burden. It greatly reduces the waste generated by frequent data migration and reduces energy consumption required to control temperature and humidity, thus reducing CO2 emissions.
