There is no doubt that the new iPad, with its high resolution "retina" display, is a wonderful media consumption device. Although it isn’t capable of shooting or editing any professional video footage quite yet, it can still be an invaluable tool for any filmmaker’s toolkit.

For broadcasters, covering events and breaking news has traditionally required significant capital investment in the form of microwave and satellite trucks. For live-event producers, it’s meant linking a camera to an expensive real-time encoder, and in turn to a fast, wired Internet connection.

Professional video certainly isn’t what it was at the dawn of the Betacam era, or even what it was 10 years ago, and overall that’s for the best—your current camera options are smaller and less expensive, and they produce higher-quality images.
