Teradek Wave Reviews

Not finished product

comparison with VIDIU GO product Pros. 1. Have the build-in monitor Cons. 1. Have no ability to test the internet speed. (what is critical at the location) 2. You can't monitor stream speed and use the monitor at the same time ( stream speed chart table takes full screen - what a joke) 3. With the batteries is extremely heavy. 4. Can't run from the regular 2amp power bank 5. Can't mix Stereo signal to MONO, so if you solo operator and have no mixing desk, so a big chance that your audience will hear only left or right speaker depends with one is speaking at the time (it was a deal-breaker for us) 6. You can't see full RMTP keys and addresses in this big monitor, somehow a genius developer adds a nice unnecessary graphic but where you need to put stream key it's only a short line. Looks like a very amateur focus product not for professionals. quite big disappointment from Teradek.

We use this device for small and medium 4 cameras or less events. Very nice to have as a back up for bigger events too. It's handy to be able to mount the streaming device on the camera its self.

Super sharp monitor with built in network bonding

I've been using the Teradek ViduX which is an encoder with network bonding. What I like about the Wave is that this removes the need to use the App or the Web Interface to set up and monitor the stream. Favorite features: - Bright screen - Multiple internet sources for bonding - Super fast setup (best to setup in advance of an event) - Responsive Touch Screen Why not 5 stars? I've been using this for at least 2 months now and it does have some quirks. With version firmware 2.4, I've have connectivity issues with 1080p 60fps (especially for sports) and the WAVE formatted SD card not able to be read by my Mac. Support has been very responsive and they have addressed some of my earlier issues. I do wish it had a HDMI passthrough like the ViduX. Workarounds: I've switched to 30fps and I don't record on the SD card. Wish list: - You can see YouTube chat comments on the screen, but you cannot burn them into the stream as a lower third. - Which such a great monitor, it would be great to have focus peaking like SmallHD monitors. Ideal user: I would say if you only use one camera and need a reliable bonded network connection where you can combine multiple internet connections, then this is a great use case for you. The Monitor isn't exactly 30fps (I don't have a way of measuring it, but it looks like it does skip a few frames). I'm hoping a firmware update will help optimize that. The screen is VERY bright at 1000 nits and I imagine this would be similar in performance of the Small HD monitor that sells here on BH Photo for $1,199 (SmallHD is under the same parent company as Teradek). Network bonding requires a subscription with Sharelink.tv by Teradek. They give a generous amount of free hours to try before you can subscribe on-demand and pay per gigabyte. This service also works like Restream where you can stream to multiple destinations, but only use one outbound stream which saves on bandwidth. If you are a visual person, I highly recommend watching my in depth video review on YouTube so you can decide if you want to buy this monitor. https://youtu.be/Nhct4CsJMiE Tip: I've attached photos to this review. I HIGHLY recommend that you use a rig to attach to your camera instead of using a monitor arm clamp and attaching it to your tripod. The arm seems to amplify any movement! At a minimum, have a heavy duty tripod and good head. I ordered the Gitzo series 3 and Sachtler Ace XL both from BH Photo and that would be the absolute minimum I would use to get a stable platform with buttery smooth pan and tilt with this rig.

Another half baked product........

I have been trying to get this thing working most of the day. Seems the recording options only work 1out of every 5 or 6 attempts to set the device, Frequent factory resets seem to help. It has been a struggle keeping it connected to the CDNs, though I have other encoders that were quite happily staying connected. I have two regrets about this thing 1) Buying it... I have had issues with Teradek in the past and have avoided their products, but this was just a slick design I wanted to try it. 2) The boxes ended up in a friend's vehicle and he already brought them to the dump, so I can't even return this thing. So it will end up in the pile with my other Teradek items and I will occasionally due firmware checks to see if maybe the manufacturer eventually develops a working and reliable product.

A fantastic streaming monitor

Build quality of this monitor is top notch. It's mostly metal and feels like a professional piece of gear. The 1,000nit touch screen is bright and very responsive. Colors looked accurate right out of the box. The all metal stand is unique and unlike any field monitor I have used before. It's quite strong and perfect to sit on a desk top. This device not only serves as a field monitor but it is an all in one solution for live streaming. As a live streaming device it is almost second to none. Everything you need is built into the monitor. No need for a separate computer making this idea for using in event spaces where it may not be feesible to bring along a computer or laptop. There is more than enough battery life using 2 NP-F950 batteries and they are hot swappable as well as well so when one battery is completly extinguished you can swap it out for a fresh one. You can also just power it off of a USB C battery bank. The stability of your streams will be more solid with this than any other device I can think of due to it's network bonding called Sharelink. Using Teradek's service you can bond your wireless, ethernet or even a USB modem to get the most solid network connection possible. This is no small feature and probably one of the biggest reasons to get the Wave in the first place. If your stream is mission critical and simply can't afford for it to go down this one feature alone is worth the asking price in my opinion. This is the device you get when you are streaming professionally meaning you are getting paid for the service. Nothing screams amateur more that having your stream go down just because your wireless connection went down. With the network bonding of this device that shouldn't happen to you as long as you are using more than one of the other connection types.

Exactly what I needed for my streaming cart

I live stream weddings and use a combination of the ATEM Mini Pro ISO and the Vidiu Go for hardware switching and bonded internet encoding. I don't have a large cart so had to just focus on using the multiview from one monitor with the tiny program out view to see what I was outputting. I didn't have space for anything more. In comes the Teradek Wave which replaces my Vidiu Go and bonds networks with Sharelink. This thing is a perfect program out monitor and encoder that I attach onto a stand that I mounted on my cart. It has internal recording as well, but I have my ATEM ISO model to do ISO recording for post editing. However ATEM Mini Pro ISO program recording... is no good... I can't seem to get a quality program recording along with higher quality ISO recordings so I've been sticking with the Wave's internal recording to get a good quality output in case the program needs no edits and needs to be available for download ASAP. Very useful tool to expand my streaming cart without further cluttering it.

The Teradek Wave Smart Streaming Monitor/Encoder would still be backwards compatible with an existing Wi-Fi infrastructure. Wifi 6 though will offer faster Wi-Fi speeds, lower latency and distance.

For the Teradek Wave Smart Streaming Monitor/Encoder, the RTMP's URL and key can be entered in manually with "Add a channel", which will save the channel's information for future use. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/lit_files/790693.pdf Manual - page 7

With the Teradek Wave Smart Streaming Monitor/Encoder, a subscription is only needed for bonding (multi-network) usage. A single cellular connection (phone hotspot), along with wired and Wi-Fi connections do not require any subscriptions.
