19 Travel Photographers to Follow on Instagram

36Share

The theme of travel is infectious on Instagram, given the more than 100 million posts boasting a “#travel” hashtag. And things get decidedly more complicated from there, since the American spelling of traveler/traveling, and the British spelling with double l’s yield similarly stratospheric figures. Not to mention numbers for synonyms such as #adventure, #voyage, and #wanderlust.

Given such volume, compiling a list of top Instagram travel shooters is a task not to be taken lightly. This current selection melds my personal tastes with tips from colleagues, research on other top pick lists and, most enjoyably, a direct recommendation from each feed featured.

During my search, visual themes prompted me to segment feeds into female, male, and duo practitioners. A fourth segment features authentic-style image feeds initiated by the project “Everyday Africa” and select examples of other “Everyday” communities inspired by this concept.

We hope you’ll enjoy this alphabetized list of traveling women, men, couples and communities. Finally, with all the travel talent out there, we’re certain there are undiscovered treasures to be found, so please share your favorite (or your own) Instagram travel feeds in our comments section.

Everyday global travel communities

Everyday Africa, founded in 2012 by Peter DiCampo and Austin Merrill, is a broad network of photographers dedicated to localized storytelling through a collection of mobile photography striving to rise above media-driven stereotypes depicting Africa primarily as a place overrun by conflict, disease, and poverty. Widely followed and globally featured by media outlets, Everyday Africa’s related education initiative has been used by more than 2,500 students since 2014.

This project has also inspired dozens of other “Everyday” feeds (only a few of which we had room for below), with a goal of promoting local norms and global commonalities, and a collective audience of more than 1 million.

Travel tag: DiCampo recommends dcoreraphotography, saying, “I love seeing Mauritania from a local perspective.”

Everyday Egypt is a collective of photographers in Egypt working together to show images of everyday life, providing a greater context to the headlines and all the negative news coming from Egypt and the Middle East. Founded by Belgian/American documentary photographer Tinne Van Loon (@tinnevl), this feed aims to provide a more accurate view of the country, breaking stereotypes along the way.

Travel tag: Everyday Egypt recommends ali_zar3y.

Everyday Middle East is an Instagram-based photography project featuring images by 20 contributing photographers living in the Middle East and North Africa. Founded by photojournalist Lindsay Mackenzie (@lindsay_mackenzie) in March 2014, the project’s aim is to share images of everyday life, unfiltered, without an editor or an agenda, in hopes of working against the stereotypes and visual tropes that are so prevalent in mainstream media coverage of the region.

Everyday Vietnam is a collective of photographers (both Vietnamese and expats) working in different parts of Vietnam, with diversity in styles and photographic practice. “With this mix, we seek a more in-depth look into contemporary Vietnam than the stereotyped images presented by most Western media. Through the feed and its curation, we encourage people, especially local youngsters, to take part in a photographic community.”

Travel tag: Everyday Vietnam recommends chencocot, “a tour guide in the beach town of Nha Trang, Vietnam, who happens to be an awesome photographer.”
