The FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS II upgrades the versatility of its predecessor to accommodate the raw power of Sony’s flagship cameras, supporting autofocus and autoexposure tracking at up to 120 fps. It retains the optical design of the first-generation lens, maintaining performance in sharpness, color accuracy, and clarity throughout the zoom range. The form factor remains similar as well. Balancing the optic is a fast and quiet linear AF motor, as well as an Optical SteadyShot image stabilization system that minimizes the appearance of camera shake when working handheld.
Applications: Typically thought of as a kit lens, this wide to short-tele zoom is a great first lens for general everyday shooting, travel, and walk-around applications. It is relatively lightweight, the OSS means it's suitable for working in difficult lighting conditions, and is fully compatible with high-end tracking on Sony’s flagship camera bodies.
Pros
+ Versatile focal length range
+ Lightweight design
+ Optical SteadyShot
+ Weather-sealed
Cons
- Relatively slow
- Not the strongest optical performance
- Reduced focal length range compared to lenses starting at 24mm
