The sequel to a legend, the FE 85mm f/1.4 GM II is lighter and more compact than its predecessor while delivering improved image quality, smoother bokeh, faster autofocus performance, and better overall performance and usability for video shooters. Sony has tweaked the optical design to include a few more elements, including a second XA element, to help deliver higher edge-to-edge resolution and contrast and, of course, the smooth bokeh that is the signature of this lens class. The new lens also boasts improved autofocus performance, delivering stills at up 3x faster than its predecessor while the newly incorporated XD linear motor enables the lens to track moving subjects with high precision. The faster, quieter autofocus translates into video as well, which in turn benefits from features like in-body breathing compensation, linear response manual focus, and a de-clickable aperture ring.
Applications: The 85mm lens has the reputation for being a portrait lens, and that’s exactly where it excels—with portraits, fashion, headshots, and documentary subjects—but this time around, it’s optimized for video as well.
