While living far from her Kentucky roots, teaching English in South Korea, photographer Liz Groeschen harnessed photography as a powerful tool to communicate exactly what she was seeing to her friends and family back home. In this Optic 2018 video, she shares stories and photos about the self-assigned projects she undertook as an American expat in South Korea, and during an ensuing 443-day trip around the world. Among her tips for developing successful self-assignments: Make it personal, work on a project and put it online consistently, mine other interests and activities for pictures on a regular basis, develop a specific formula to hold yourself accountable, use typologies to enhance a project, turn the unusual into an assignment, pitch your projects to compatible outlets for publication and exhibition, use the project to learn a new skill or technique, and reassess, readjust, and try again if goals are not being met, in addition to many other valuable insights. After watching, you’ll have a new appreciation for the role that self-assigned projects can have in helping you explore conditions around you and adapt to your surroundings, no matter where you find yourself.
