All About Apple Boxes
Apple boxes are made of wood and used for a variety of tasks in the film and photo industries. Resembling simple crates, they're known to make filmmaking easier. You can buy them individually for small projects, or in sets for larger projects.
What Are Apple Boxes Used For?
Contrary to what their name implies, wooden apple boxes aren't for holding apples. They're meant for various photo and film projects. Grip departments use them to give actors extra height, to support other film equipment, and as makeshift step ladders, among other tasks. Some boxes also double as storage.
How to Choose Apple Boxes
Apple boxes are all similar in design, but are available in varying dimensions. A standard, full-size box is 20 x 12 x 8", but you can buy half and quarter sizes of smaller heights. Matthews apple boxes are well known, and the company specializes in boxes that adhere to these measurements. Mini boxes and nesting varieties are available if you need space-saving options.
What's Cribbing?
Cribbing refers to individual blocks of wood used to support dollies and other equipment. Like boxes, wood cribbing is versatile for stability and support, for balancing dolly tracks or for other tasks, during production. You can set them up to form a temporary structure called a box crib, and set heavy gear on top. Softwoods, such a pine, are the preferred material for cribbing for safety reasons.
