Nikon's 24-120mm zoom lens is now even smaller than its predecessor, the AF Zoom-Nikkor 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6D IF and features an innovative Vibration Reduction (VR) system that allows handheld telephoto zoom shooting even in poorly lit conditions. The VR system minimizes image blur caused by camera shake, and offers the equivalent of shooting at a shutter speed 3 stops (8 times) faster.
Covering many commonly used focal lengths in one compact zoom lens, the 24-120mm proves itself to be a unique and popular choice when a variety of subjects may be encountered. Ideal where space and weight are restricted - such as travel photography - the wide zoom range offers the opportunity to capture a variety of subjects both close by and far away, from interiors to portraits.
Note: G-type lenses are fully compatible only with the F5, F100, N80, N75, N65, N55, D1-series and D100 (or any newer model) cameras.
Note: VR-feature will only work with Nikon's F5, F100, N80, N75, N65, D100 & D1-series (or any newer model) cameras.
Note: When mounted on Nikon digital cameras (Nikon DX format) D2-Series, D1-Series, D100 and D70, D90 digital cameras, the lens' picture angle becomes 61°-13°20' and its 35mm equivalent focal length range is approx. 36-180mm.

If there is one thing about this lens, its the comments you will find online about its general lack of sharpness, and that you 'shouldn't' use it.
I own this lens, in addition to the Pro 24-70mm f/2.8 and yes, it absolutely doesn't compare to the 24-70mm, but its much more versatile and useable as a general purpose lens.
Yes, this lens has somewhat soft corners, yes it has some distortion at the ends of the zoom range. But lets put this into context, its sharpness and distortion are better then what you get with a 'kit' lens on a DX camera.
I use this lens often, and I produce great results that I sell to my clients. I've never had an issue with this lens resulting in technically poor images. In my book, producing results that my clients love and are very happy to pay for is the definition of a professional item.
This lens is chronically being under-rated due to its lackluster DX performance, and because most FX camera owners are 100% pixel-peepers. The fact is this lens lets you travel relatively light, and get excellent photos especially on FX (D700 & D3).
This lens does indeed produce better results on FX format then it does on DX format. Overall sharpness is better, while the corners are no better. If your using a DX format camera then stick with the 18-200 VR, if your using FX I find this lens to be very capable, despite the 'negative publicity'.
On FX I pair this lens up with a 50 f/1.8 and 85 f/1.8 for indoor/studio use and you have a very capable, low cost, kit.

I am a professional event and portrait photographer. I have been using this lens for the past couple of month with mixed results. The lens is extremely versatile and is very cost affective. It is small and easy to carry. The focal length from 24-120mm is really great, especially for the kind of work I do. It is good for general snap shots, and any thing that you want to shoot. However it is not razor sharp like the pro glass that Nikon offers at three times the price (24-70mm 2.8). There is a reason why this lens is a third the price. Can you take sharp pictures with it? Yes, but only if your careful with the focus and you stop down as much as you can. There is a little distortion at the 24mm range in the corners and sides. However aside from the razor sharp images of the high end glass, it just can't take the kind of image you need to compete in the pro arena. It doesn't have the razor sharp clarity and the color reproduction of the high end pro lenses. The old saying is really true, "You get what you pay for!" I am going to get the 24-70mm 2.8 G lens very soon.

Comments about Nikon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto AF Zoom Nikkor 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR Autofocus Lens:
I always wanted this lens even when I used to shoot with film camera (Nikon N90s). The previous iteration of this lens (non VR sersion) had great reviews. I knew before buying this lens that some people criticized this lens as being soft. With this type of lens, the lens designers have to make certain compromises and that softness and vignetting under certain condition is inevitable. I bought this used and thought what a great price. Well, there is a reason why this lens is so inexpensive used and the new one is almost [$]. Now that I put this lens through the paces, I am pretty disappointed with its overall performance. This lens is soft at all settings and not just at the edges. My 18-105mm Nikon kit lens that came with D90 was sharper than this lens. I was hoping to use this lens as a walk-about lens when I upgrade to full frame sensor. All I can say is do not buy this version. Buy the newer 24-120mm f/4.0 VR II. Even the new one has a slight vignetting problem at the telephoto end but it is a much, much better lens than this one. I plan on selling this and save up for the newer lens.

I work for a magazine and am often sent to "events" to photograph not only individuals but also groups of people. The 24-120 can cover all situations eliminating the need to carry a second body or change lenses.
The lens is adequately sharp an the autofocus is quite quick on the D700, as well as the D40X.

Comments about Nikon Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto AF Zoom Nikkor 24-120mm f/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR Autofocus Lens:
I read many reviews about this lens before finally giving it a try. It seems people either really liked it, or didn't care for it at all. I guess I am one that really likes it. For a "walk-around" on my D90 it performs great giving me a 'slighly-wide' to a 'short telephoto', in one lens. I haven't had any issues with any aspect of the lens, sharpness or other-wise. I never really thought this focal length would be something I wanted for a 'crop' camera, but for myself, it has worked out pretty good. The one I bought had been refurbished by Nikon and other than the non-descript box it came in, it looks as new. Overall I am very happy with it, and it allows me to add something wider, and a longer telephoto, without much overlap.

Just recently purchased this lens and very unhappy with the performance in low lighting. I have a similar (much older) f/3.5-5.6 and it performs ten times better. Wish I did not spend the extra money....

This is an excellent all-around landscape lens, but not quite so hot at close ups and wildlife for obvious reasons. I've used this lens for nearly two years including one trip to Yellowstone and
another to Yosemite.
I've heard some people say that it isn't very sharp, but in my own pesonal opinion, I find it to be as sharp as could be expected (after all, it isn't Zeiss).

Nice walking around lens for outside (good light) or longer exposures on tripod. You will see some vignetting at 24mm at f3.5. There is some distortion too.
But, all in all, I've been able to take sharp images in the middle of the aperture range (5.6 to 11) without a problem and this is a great walk around lens for the price. Obviously, if you want the best optics and have the cash, spring for the 24-70 f/2.8.

I have nothing to complain about this Lens. It is what it is: a good lens. I've already taken some of the best pictures I've ever taken with this lens, and a better lens wouldn't have made much of a difference. There will be pictures I won't be able to get because of it's feature set, but for the price I have no complaints.

Sorry for my bad English....
I remembered when my junior bought D90 together with this lens as his first gear....."I think I have chosen a wrong lens!" he said.
I took it along with me for about 2 days. On the next 3rd day, I showed him some candids and question him.... "Can you find any problems with these pictures?" He kept looking around and impressed with those pictures and cannot find any problem beside so many good photos from every focal, aperture and all details.
I told him as my last advice..... "The man behind the gun!"
So, This is not a bad lens, maybe more than enough
