The Rode NTG-2 is a condenser shotgun microphone designed for professional audio capturing in the field or indoors. With a history of manufacturing quality studio microphones, Rode has implemented low noise output electronics and wide bandwidth, both of which attribute to the NTG-2's broadcast sound quality.

The super-cardioid polar pattern and line plus gradient acoustic principle effectively minimize audio and noise at the off-axis (sides) of the microphone, while the front of the capsule accurately reproduces incoming audio signal. The result is greater intelligibility and signal-to-noise ratio when using the NTG-2 in noisy environments.

The NTG-2 is powered with an internal 1.5V AA size battery or an external +48 Volt phantom power source. The output is a standard 3-pin XLR male connector.

The microphone features a rugged, all metal, lightweight enclosure that is ideal for camera mounting yet durable enough to withstand the rigors of heavy road use. The Rode NTG-2 is packaged with a microphone stand mount and windscreen.

Low Handling Noise
Low noise output electronics provide high signal-to-noise ratio. The NTG-2 is designed to also reduce noise caused by handling, rigid mounting hardware, loose cabling etc.

When I dove head first into the world of filmming with DSLR's I was told I would need to get my sound in an external manner since the audio off the DSLR isn't that great. I knew the RODE products were known for quality so I got the B&H RODE NTG 2 Kit.

The choice I made was definatly the right one. The sound out of the external mic is fantastic. My film projects finally looked like films and now sounded like them as well. I use this as my main source to capture sound on all my shoots now. The price for the kit is more then resonable especially once you hear the kind of quality you get out of it.

There is honestly only one real problem though. It comes in the form of low audio gain when used with the Zoom H4n. Seperatly the devices are amazing but together the problem arises. I was definatly worried when I saw the audio levels were not breaking -6 (it should be around -12) when I was recording at mic volume of 100! I read around and found I would need a preamp but being the director, director of photography, co-sound guy, and art director I didn't want to carry around a pre-amp that needed to be plugged in (I was filming by a river).

Luckily RODE has made something to help this situation in the form of the RODE D-Powerplug. It adds 20db gain which is way more then enough to get the right audio levels. So with the Zoom H4n, the RODE NTG-2 and the RODE D-Powerplug I saved easily over $300-$500.

Be aware of this mic's problem with bass clipping if you are planning to use this in loud environment... wedding, concert, and any other crowded events. It will start to become a problem even if you put it next to a tv with 80% volume. the bass clipping will destroy the whole audio track and making your works sounds like a joke that some middle school kids recorded.

Comments about Rode NTG-2 Battery or Phantom Powered Condenser Shotgun Microphone:

This is an amazing mic for what you pay. I was undecided on whether to wait and get an ME66/K6 for an extra few hundred dollars, or to just buy this one now, and I am now very happy I made the decision to stick with this one. I compared my NTG-2 last week to a friends ME66/K6, and I actually like mine more. It's $200 cheeper and has a much nicer, round, full sound as opposed to the hotter, tinnier sound of the ME66/K6. If you're looking for a good mic in this price range, this thing is what you want.

i bought this mic, with a recorder that only worked 30% of the time. Switched to a 3.5mm mic recorder. If I used xlr, i'd likely get this rode mic.

Bought this for my Canon XA10 unfortunately it is too skinny for the stock mic clamp/mount so i have to add a rubber spacer to keep it tight BUT thats not a big deal. Bought the kit with it which consists of Audio Technica XLR cable and Pearstone Mic Shock Mount and works great!

Comments about Rode NTG-2 Battery or Phantom Powered Condenser Shotgun Microphone:

This is a good quality, short shotgun microphone that works on phantom power or a battery (meaning that it is an electret condenser capable of running of less than 48v). It is very sensitive and clean. My only critique is that it doesn't have an ON/OFF switch. The advantage of this is that you never have to worry whether or not it is on, but the disadvantage is that it constantly drains the battery if one is installed. If it is mounted on a boom pole, you have to pull the battery to switch it off, or else let it drain. You can't conserve battery power by quickly switching it off between takes as you can on many Audio Technica mics. Other than this, it is a great mic. Good for close mic'ing with a boom, or mounting on a camera.

I knew it would "work," but I was pleasantly shocked at how WELL it worked on my first shoot with it. Set it up on a mic stand for interviews and the audio was clean and very robust. I was expecting a bit of a "tinny" sound that I would just work with in post, but that did not happen - and thanks to the B&H guy on the phone who recommended this mic!

This is a great microphone for capturing excellent sound in a crowded interview situations and a great second sound source in set piece interview as a back up to Lavalier Mics. It works with my Azden Mixer and Tascam Dr-680 recorder as well as giving a nice clean sound directly into the Sony HXR NX5 Camera ... so lots of flexibility without compromising on the end result. I bought this over the NTG-1 simply because of the battery power capability which allows the mic to be used with wireless plug in transmitters (ie Sony UTX-P1).

I live in Australia and buy Rode from B&H ... a great Aussie product from an amazing retailer!

I am not an expert on microphones, but here is what I do know.

The stereo mic on my Panasonic HMC150 leaves me disappointed many times.

I purchased the Rode NTG-2 initially for a specific project. I was to interview subjects related to a development project in West Africa. The interviews were strictly run and gun and ambient noise is a tremendous issue. So far, I have been extremely please with how the mic preformed. Ambient noise is still audible, but I can clearly hear the interviewees. I used this mic with the optional Dead Cat wind silencer. (The wind silencer presents a trade off in wide angle shooting as it shows up with the HMC150 in the upper right hand corner.) and had no issue with wind (granted wind wasn't as strong where I shot).

So, the bottom line. It's an excellent mic for the money. Anything better quality is going to cost quite a bit more. I have seen this mic used all over the place and now I know why.

Did a side by side with an Audio Technica (in the same price range) and this mic using an H4n. The NTG-2 had better rejection of ambient sound and had a better frequency response range.

I use the mic with my Sony PCM-M10 to record bird songs - indoors, without preamp or mixer. The output sound quality is clear and satisfactory. I really like the mic.
