This is the Elinchrom Ranger RX-Speed AS 1100 watt/second battery operated To-Go Kit. The "RX" signifies the ability to be fired by a remote control handset, or computer. The power range selection is 7 f-stops. Lower the power to 8.5 w/s, and switch to slow recycle and up to 3800 exposures can be made before recharging is needed.
Included in this kit is the Varistar 33" Umbrella-Softbox. It is easy to assemble and lightweight, and offers wide, even and soft illumination. It is suited for portraits and shots of 1 - 2 people. Add a light stand of your choice to complete this kit.
Elinchrom Ranger has flash durations as short as 1/4310 sec. (with 2 "A" heads attached), ideal for sports, fashion, and theatre photography. Controls on the pack permit changing the output in 0.1 stop increments in an easy-to-read digital display.
This is a 1 head, Speed AS kit which includes a Freelite "S" flash head, and a Speed AS power pack, which allows asymmetrical power distribution of the power to the two head outlets.

After years of wishing and wanting, I finally added the Elinchrom Rangers to my arsenal. The power, weight, and moderate weather sealing were huge draws to pick this over other products such as the Acutes. Originally I hoped to use this pack for mostly action sports such as skiing, kayaking, and mountain biking, and undoubtedly will, but so far I have used it for scads of portraiture for my PR photographer job. The light is consistent, with good color and perfect exposure. The battery pack isn't too heavy for what it is, and the head is very light weight. I like the double-locking mechanism of the head to modifiers, it provides a very sound and sturdy connection. The included umbrella/brolly box works very well. The light falls off quickly for an umbrella, but I like the affect. However, the umbrella is pretty fragile, the second week I had it, a girl knocked it over and broke the connections in the tip. The kit shipped with pretty incomplete directions--none of the fuses were installed and it failed to mention that. Also, the kit shipped with the incorrect charger that didn't fit US wall-plugs. [...]The sync connection works well, however the cables to a standard mini-phone Pocketwizard socket are pretty pricey for what they are. The built-in optical slave works pretty well for what it is. Over all, I am very happy with the product, but it didn't get that 5th star due to the lack of attention to detail[...]considering it would have been worthless for the past 3 weeks unless I had a multitude of cables laying around.

I have been using this for just under a year. The strobe is great, especially in midday sun. Easy to use, even a 1st time assistant could make changes for you. I have approximately 4,500 firings of the strobe on my unit.
Only issues I have had..
#1 too heavy for some of my assistants to cary
#2 Batteries showing a full charge on the charger, then when placed in the unit they are only holding 10%. This has just happened recently.

Got this for limitless location work instead of a gasoline generator. It can accept other elinchrom strobes with an adapter except monolights. I have an extra battery that I rarely use. I thought I could use this for weddings as well but it is just to heavy even on a backpack for that kind of work. I kinda wish I had gone with the Elinchrom Ranger Quadra instead but those only have 400w of power. So in the future I will add another head to this Ranger and also get the two heads on a Ranger Quadra. Downside is that this unit does not have a skyport, you have to spend an additional $110 for it.

I use them on location for key lights for close up environmental portraits, and for fill light for indoor sports.

Comments about Elinchrom Ranger RX-AS Kit with "S" Head:
The description here is for the older pack, newer packs actually get 250 full power shots per charge, not 150. I think the recycle time is faster as well.
1100 w/s creates a lot of light (very efficient), and the number of shots doubles with every stop down you go from there. I rarely have to swap batteries.
I've had mine for a few years and am looking to buy a second kit. It's a good workhorse, handles outdoor weather just fine - hot or cold. The weather sealing comes in handy, I've used it in very heavy mist with no problems.
I give 4 stars because I wish the head cables were longer. Extension cords are expensive. Also the sync cord for pocketwizards are rather expensive. But the heads and reflectors are fairly reasonable in price compared to profoto.
Weight-wise it's not very heavy for a lead-acid battery pack system, and I've had no issues flying with it as long as I've noted it's a non-spillable gel cell.

Love this! It's the best deal going. Throws the case away. I need to go on location alot. The Kit is the best bang for the buck.
The down side is the mounting, cables are connected, and not long enough. Plus side is it swats the bees away!
I've been very happy with my kit. If your thinking of it, do it!

Comments about Elinchrom Ranger RX-AS Kit with "S" Head:
Overall, the kit is great. It does come with a adapter so that you can attach a Skyport RX slave. This was not clear in the B&H listing, so I bought a separate adapter. This is not necessary.
The case is big and sturdy. I will likely keep the kit in the case for the time being. Otherwise, it comes with the pack, head, two batteries, charger, standard grid reflector, varistar umbrella reflector, a 36" brolly box, sync cord, and skyport adapter.
Regarding the head and cable, they are permanently attached to one another. It would be nice if the cable was could be completely detached from the head.
The umbrella/brolly box that comes with the kit is nice. Just behind the umbrella face is a back panel that blocks scatter and keeps more light coming out the front. The back panel is black on the outside and white on the inside. This makes it pretty efficient.
The kit is also very well sealed against the elements. I have not used it on location extensively yet, but it looks like it will be pretty tough.
Great kit overall.

Simple and easy to use, specially on outside locations.
I use two of these sets for my portrait work for outside locations and i am very happy with them, very reliable.
1100 Ws is enough power to underexpose the background on a harsh and sunny day and throw the light on my models, right there where i want it with a small beaty dish .. .. .. .. besides there are plenty lightshapers for elinchrom, and thats for me important too.
B aware that the unit only weights for about 8 kg so take a membership at your nearest gym or get yourself some crew .. .. ;-) The hard case is fine and you will need it to carry the set around with you.
At the moment i am saving money to buy a third ranger RX Speed battery pack to go outside with 1100 Ws for (3) each head .. .. ..
Elinchrom rangers really rocks and your images will go there!!!

I do model portfolios and do most of my shoots on location with natural light. This system has has given me more versatility and I do not have to rely on natural light. It is portable, durable and easy to use. Thinking about getting another kit. If you do any type of portrait work outside of the studio - this is a must!

Great powerful setup, well built and very portable. I have used Q flashes, Strobes, and speedlites but none compare to this setup for quality and power.
