When I'm shooting outside in bright sun, seeing my EV settings inside my viewfinder without the HoodEye by Hoodman, was like trying to find a needle in the haystack. Up until I bought the HoodEye, it was next to impossible.
I shoot strictly in Manual mode, and especially in bright snow when you have to over-expose by a 1/2 to full stop, to see those EV settings was torture. I had to point the camera in a different direction, press the shutter half-way, then recompose keeping the inside meter in sight. The HoodEye eliminated inside glare and allowed me to fine-tune my images precisely in the fashion I wanted, for precisely the "look" I wanted.
I would recommend the HoodEye to any serious photographer.

The Hood-Eye works as advertised in almost completely eliminating the peripheral light that interferes with your view through the viewfinder. This greatly improves the viewfinder image clarity when outdoors. In this respect I'm completely happy with it. Unfortunately, the diameter of its lens is maybe 1mm too small, preventing a 100% view of the camera viewfinder without ever so slightly shifting your eye location side to side if you want to clearly see into the corners.
The viewfinder clarity improvement (in typical outdoor light) is enough to keep it on my camera in spite of a slight reduction in visibility in the extreme corners. Because of this I would not provide an *unqualified* recommendation.

Easy to install. Comfortable.
Tends to break down. I end up replacing every 3 months or so. Frequent rotating between portrait and landscape shooting probably contributes to the breakdown.

Simple little piece of rubber that works as advertised... totally comfortable in reducing stray light as you look through the viewfinder. The only drawback I think anyone would find is that it ever so slightly covers the top of the LCD - for me, that is a small price to pay.

Comments about Hoodman HoodEye for Canon 5D & 5D Mark II Cameras:
As some of the negative comments I read, I found that this this hood eye piece is not well designed. It blocks the viewfinder's vision, it's quite floppy and doesn't adjust well to the eye, and also covers part of the LCD. I ended not using it.

I just purchased this product only a few hours ago. I decided to mount it on my camera and it did not fit! I re-read the box and it was indeed meant for my camera so i forced it on and it took me about ten minutes to remove it! This could be a factory defect but it still hurts their reputation in my eyes.

I liked the idea of this product but I have a small face and the HoodEye doesn't fit naturally. I have to make an effort to get it comfortably around my eye. It also interferes with the Hood Loupe which I find I really need. For some people this might be a very good option.

Comments about Hoodman HoodEye for Canon 5D & 5D Mark II Cameras:
The eyecup is of good quality and seals out light as it should, but has some serious functional defects:
-Blocks part of the LCD, which is annoying during playback, live view, and video recording.
-Difficult to insert and remove.
-Doesn't feel right when taking verticals.
I wish I had just bought a regular Canon eyecup replacement.

Comments about Hoodman HoodEye for Canon 5D & 5D Mark II Cameras:
Very useful for blocking sidelight from the viewfinder so you can see more clearly. Canon doesn't make anything like this for the camera.
I think it would be OK without the long side extension, just a round rubber eyecup, but it work's well when adjusted the right way.
Only problem with it is if you also want to use one of Hoodman's LCD loupes. I use one of these and it's great. But, it's difficult to use the two together. The HoodEye slightly blocks the LCD, so you can't get the loupe to cover the entire LCD.
They need to make it so that it can be flipped up out of the way, to use the loupe.
But, I still use them both every day. Can't work without them. They are so helpful to see through the viewfinder and the magnified view on the LCD.''
I had to slightly file the plastic on the HoodEye where it attaches to the camera to loosen it up so it will slide a little to use the LCD. A hassle, but worth the trouble for me to make careful compositions.

I like the Hoodeye, but I can't use my swing out LCD for it is in the way.
I have taken it off and can't use it. Don't sell it to those with the swing out LCD. They can't use it either. Canon, T3i from B&H. Dan Johnson

Comments about Hoodman HoodEye for Canon 5D & 5D Mark II Cameras:
I use this mainly to protrude from the eyepiece hole in a soft sided camera silencer. It helps me get my eye close to the camera eyepiece and hold the camera in place inside the quiet bag. It does that just as it should and does help keep ambient light from affecting my eyepiece view. One problem: it fits tightly and is not easy to attach or remove.

My reason for purchasing the HoodEye was simple, to keep my face from smudging the main screen of my 5D. Problem solved! It also blocks any light from entering the viewfinder. Overall, it's a useful accessory to have.

I bought two of these for my Canons: D MK II and the other for my 50D. Installs easily and keeps ouut extraneous light when shooting outdoors. It does, however, slightly block the LCD at top.

Comments about Hoodman HoodEye for Canon 5D & 5D Mark II Cameras:
Took a bit of wiggling to get it in the socket but once it's in, it's in. The main reason why I got it is so that I don't smudge my LCD with my face every time I take a picture. The hood eye sits further away from the LCD so I don't have that issue anymore. It's also a lot more comfortable and does reduce ambient light. Good product.

The HoodEye was a pleasant add-on to my Canon 5d MK II. The HoodEye keeps my nose off of the LCD screen and gives me a much better view of my subjects. It is worth every penny to buy this device.

Comments about Hoodman HoodEye for Canon 5D & 5D Mark II Cameras:
This is a major improvement over the stock eyecup.
The Hoodeye helps keep out glare from ambient light. It forms a reasonable around your eye to keep out the light. That is the good. The bad is that it is a little difficult to rotate (for vertical shots) and partially blocks the color LCD screen, especially when rotated for a vertical shot. On balance for me, the benefits outweigh the minor annoyances.
And ... for glasses wearers, this will work if you take your glasses off and use the diopter adjustment on your viewfinder.
