Umbrellas soften, broaden, and diminish the light output of any tungsten or flash light source. Umbrellas with a white interior will soften and weaken light more than an umbrella with a silver lining. A white umbrella without a black backing may also be used as a makeshift softbox, although the use of the light will not be as efficient as with a lightbox.
Choosing umbrella size is determined by the size of the subject, and the strength of the light supply being used. Choosing an umbrella surface is as subjective as choosing a paint and brush.

I have used this a handfull of times in the past couple weeks with outdoor/indoor location portrait shoots. It has produced nothing but exceptional light using my Canon 430ex II speedlight. I am using this umbrella on a kit softbox stand, and hardly take out my softbox anymore. I mean to have a nice silver shoot through umbrella for $30, how can you go wrong. Just buy it already.

Good umbrellas. I hate to say it but... there is no such thing as "durable" or "well made" umbrellas. I see complaints about umbrellas all the time and the simple fact is that umbrellas will wear out. These, as well as other, umbrellas are not made to withstand hurricane force winds, rough handling, or any physical extremes. They will certainly last longer in the studio than on the road. For the price, these umbrellas are relatively well made.

Awesome bang for buck. As a reflector, has a soft silver finish. As a shoot through, works perfect. Black backing easily removed and put back on. Some convertible umbrellas do not store well with black backing after removed for the first time, not the case here! Excellent size, produces larger light than advertised. Perfect for full body portraits and small groups. Will continue to buy Westcott.

These are very nice convertible umbrella's that are reasonably priced. I have only had these for a short time, but I find their quality of light and quality of build much better than others in their class. I very much like the ease in witch the black cover can be adjusted or removed. Reinstalling take a little longer, but no longer than other convertibles. Bottom line is you won't regret this purchase.

Happy with it so far. Softens light well. Umbrella is a thick and good quality. The rod that is meant to be put into an umbrella adapter is good quality (seems solid).
Without any included instructions, it took me a sec to figure out how to get the black cover off.
Use 2 umbrella on our photobooth setup and produce enough light from our flash. The size is perfect for 4-7 people..

I got these as my 2nd set of umbrellas. The other ones I had were a cheap off-brand. These were very surprisingly sturdy. It was little heavy and well made.

I have owned several brands of umbrellas and this is the brand I like best. All umbrellas are easily damaged, but I like this one the best while it lasts!
I wish an umbrella could be made that could withstand some abuse. These are my favorite even though they won't put up with any serious abuse.

Get this instead of the Westcott one. The umbrella is made of better material and it has short rounded edge for added safety!

Overall, I'm pleased with this product. I'm a little concerned that the metal clips that hold the cover on may come off as they're only held on with a few small threads. If the cover had some more stretch to it, this might be less of a concern. But for the price, I can always buy another one. So I'm not too worried about it. I've also found that partially closing the umbrella makes it easier to put the cover back on.
As an added bonus, the Westcott umbrellas all seem to come in a thick plastic bag that makes a handy protective case to use over the long term.

Very nice umbrella and easy to use. The removeable black backing is the best part of this umbrella. Very good idea . I use the umbrella as both a shoot through and a reflector. Good quality light from both angles. The only downside I can think of is the construction is a little weak and could be easily damaged.
