Onkyo, well known for making home theater receivers, has now brought its expertise to the smart home, with a new line of Smart Speakers. The G3, available in black or white, features a 3.15" woofer and 0.79" tweeter encased in a non-resonant wood cabinet for enhanced sound quality with acoustic colorization. These speakers also have Google Assistant built-in, allowing you to control your compatible smart devices directly through them. The Google Home app provides a simple setup process, including helping you connect your favorite music service for voice-enabled streaming. Onboard physical controls also allow you to control your music playback, turn Bluetooth on or off, adjust the volume, and mute the speaker.
The Smart Speaker VD-FLX1 features Amazon Alexa compatibility instead of the Google Assistant, and adds Z-Wave and Zigbee connectivity for integration into those ecosystems. It uses a 1.27" full-range driver and adds a built-in 1080p webcam with a 114 x 78 x 135° field of view. You can use this webcam and the built-in microphone to chat with someone via the Toshiba Smart Home app on their compatible device. With privacy being a hot topic among owners of smart devices, Onkyo has integrated a rotary lens cover that turns the camera off as well as covering and protecting the lens. You can also use the camera and Toshiba Smart Home app to monitor activity in the room, and footage can be stored in the associated cloud service.
