Sonos announced its 2nd-Generation Sonos One Smart Speaker today. In doing so, the company answered the question: How do you better the best? If you're familiar with the original Sonos One at all, then you probably know it made every credible "best smart speaker" list of 2018. An enviable position, sure, but one that begs the question of where exactly do you go from there? Well, Sonos has the answer, and it's by adding Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), an updated processor, and more memory.
Because the original Sonos One received such overwhelming praise, the new model is more of a refinement than an overhaul. It has the same footprint, same color options, and offers the same features that made it such a fan favorite: great sound quality, Alexa support, voice control, etc. The major difference this time around is that the new Sonos One now comes with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to help simplify the setup process. You still stream music and manage updates via Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection, à la the original, but the onboard BLE, combined with the updated processor and bolstered memory, does open up the possibility for additional product experiences Sonos might bring to market in the future. And, like its predecessor, the new Sonos One features the same multi-room audio functionality, along with support of all your favorite streaming services (Spotify, Pandora, etc.), which, just like before, you can manage using your voice or the intuitive Sonos app. Bottom Line: You're getting the same feature-rich, fan-favorite speaker as the original Sonos One, only now with an easier setup process and the potential for future enhancements.
If you own an existing Sonos system, or if you just want a top-of-the-line smart speaker, the 2nd-Generation Sonos One is a great choice. It sounds fantastic, and the built-in Alexa functionality offers a lot of great voice-command features. The 2nd-Generation Sonos One comes in black or white and is available for order now at B&H.
The new Sonos One adds Bluetooth Low Energy functionality to the celebrated smart speaker. What features would you like to see in the next Sonos One speaker?
