NAB 2018: ARRI Takes the SkyPanel to Version 4

0Share

Already an amazing light, ARRI somehow manages to make its SkyPanel LED Softlights better and better with massive firmware updates, now up to Version 4. Ten additions have been highlighted in this update, with the overall goal being adding versatility and control, and it is easy to say they succeeded with the improved color control, specific Light Engine control via DMX, and more.

Running down the list, we should start with the Extended Color Control, providing eight new color adjustments for warmer/cooler tones, saturation/desaturation, and ±red, green, blue, cyan, magenta, or yellow. These settings are accessible using the onboard controls or via DMX. The next is one of the most impressive features: Light Engine DMX Control. Since the larger SkyPanels use a multiple light engine, (the S360 features twelve!) ARRI has now allowed individual control over each engine via DMX. This means you can now dial-in the fixture to produce light that hits the scene and subjects with extraordinary precision.

Of course, one of the updates is additional lighting effects, including explosion, welding, process, and fluorescent flicker for a total of 17 pre-programmed effects. A Stage Mode aims to make the SkyPanels viable options for theatrical productions with smooth dimming down to zero. Another mode is the Ultimate DMX Mode, which lets users select any control mode within one DMX mode, instead of needing to switch DMX modes as each scene required, as was the case before. Another control mode update comes to the SkyPanel Web Portal with expanded controls and a revamped design.

Other improvements coming in Firmware 4 include a DMX Live Page for displaying DMX information directly on the control panel, a Strobe DMX Channel for more easily controlling the effect using DMX, access to the x, y Coordinate Control either on board or via DMX, and a new custom RGBW white point, which can be set from 2800-10000K. There were some minor improvements and bug fixes, as well, so even if you don’t need these new functions, it is still highly recommended.
