Tamron Brings 50-400mm Super-Tele Zoom Lens to Nikon Z Cameras

Tamron continues to build its lineup of normal to super-tele zoom lenses, announcing a new version of its popular 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD zoom lens for Nikon’s Z-series mirrorless cameras. An all-in-one that favors the long end but gives you enough space on the short end for close subjects, the lens’s portable design, minimum focusing distance, image stabilization, and durable build reinforce its place as a single-lens solution for sideline sports, wildlife, and travel photography.

Tamron is introducing this lens alongside the Sony E version first released in 2022. It’s suitable for full-frame cameras or as a dedicated long-range option for APS-C, offering a 75-600mm equivalent focal length range. From 50mm to 400mm, this zoom covers effectively all of the focal lengths you would need for portraiture, sports, and wildlife and will be an enticing complement to a wide-angle prime for landscape and nature photographers looking for versatility at the long end.

The f/4.5-6.3 maximum aperture, while not the fastest, is sufficient for available light shooting throughout the day and the VC image stabilization helps avoid camera shake when shutter speeds get longer. The modest speed does, however, benefit this lens in terms of size and weight—it measures 3.5 x 7.3” and weighs about 2.6 lb.

Among other unique assets is remarkably close focusing performance; at the 50mm position, focusing down to 9.8” is possible, which provides a 1:2 maximum magnification for half life-size shooting. Autofocus performance should be speedy and quiet, thanks to a VXD linear motor, along with excellent subject tracking performance to keep up with photographing distant sports or nature.

Physically, the lens features a zoom lock mechanism, an assignable Focus Set button, and other settings of the lens can be updated via Tamron Lens Utility, including the ability to update the lens’s firmware. For reliable use, the lens housing is moisture-resistant and there’s a fluorine coating on the front element to shed moisture, oil, and smudging.
