A long-awaited upgrade has arrived from DZOfilm in the form of the Vespid2 line of cinema prime lenses. These new prime lenses feature improved image quality, enhanced sharpness, and they have essentially eliminated chromatic aberration in the center for an enhanced realistic effect. The lenses also provide a cleaner, more consistent bokeh over the previous VESPID line. The Vespid2 release includes six individual focal lengths and a containing all the lenses plus a hard case.
Consistency
The prime lenses come in 18, 24, 35, 50, 85, and 105mm focal lengths and feature a constant T1.9 aperture. All of the lenses are color matched with the same coatings, and they feature the same neutral color temperature across the entire line. To make swapping lenses easy, the Vespid2 primes are all identical in weight and size to prevent the need for rebalancing or changing rig configurations.
Improvements Across the Board
In addition to improved quality and sharpness, the faster, redesigned iris features a T1.9 to T22 aperture for greater exposure control. The focus gear now rotates 300⁰ up from the VESPID’s 270⁰ for even finer adjustments. And the housing itself has a new coating that provides better grip and smoother movements while reducing reflections, so it’s easier to adjust in any lighting environment.
Smart Lens Data
Another valuable addition to the Vespid2 is Cooke/i technology that allows the transmission of metadata when using supported cinema cameras from brands like ARRI, Blackmagic, and Sony. A LEMO connector on the side of each lens can also be used to integrate focus data with virtual production workflows.
Maintaining Strengths
Though the Vespid2 improves numerous features, it maintains the same image style as the original VESPID lenses. The aberration control, close-focus performance, low distortion, minimal focus breathing, and smooth focus throw continue to meet high professional standards.
Ultralightweight Design
Lighter than the previous line, each Vespid2 lens ranges from 1.8 to just 2.2 lb, making them perfect for small cinema cameras as well as handheld and gimbal rigs. They are some of the smallest PL mount lenses and feature a common 80mm front diameter, making them perfect for mobile productions.
