Fujfilm has unveiled the latest addition to their instant camera arsenal with the retro designed Instax mini Evo Cinema. This is the first instant video capable camera in the Instax line and a great 3-in-1 camera for the photo/video enthusiast.
Video clips up to 15 seconds long can be recorded by simply holding down the shutter button. Releasing the button pauses the recording, allowing users to shoot multiple cuts with ease. From there, stills can be printed with a QR code on them which, when scanned, reveal the video they were pulled from. The Instax mini Evo Cinema can also serve as a smartphone printer via a dedicated app.
The camera’s design and accessories take inspiration from classic 8mm cameras like the FUJICA Single-8, all while maintaining the small, portable form factor that makes the Instax line so popular. Directly taken from the Single-8 is a slimmed down vertical grip, which can be extended with the optional extender. Additionally, a viewfinder attachment can be used to cut glare from the rear viewing screen.
One of the most notable new features is the Eras Dial, which lets users cycle through 10 effect filters inspired by the color and texture of different eras of photography. Each effect is named after the era it represents, such as “1960,” which is modeled after the look of 8mm, and “2010,” which evokes the look of smartphone photo editing apps. Each effects has 10 adjustable degree levels for a total of 100 unique looks that can be applied to videos and images.
The Instax line has long been a favorite of photo enthusiasts and pros alike, delivering a fun, tangible photography experience. After all, what photographer doesn’t want a purely fun camera in their kit? Now, cinema shooters can get in on the action.
