Tilta continues to push the possibilities of camera accessories with the new Nucleus Autofocus Adapter, a Sony E to ARRI PL-mount adapter that turns manual PL cine lenses into autofocus-capable E-mount glass that interfaces with the full focus system inside Sony cameras. That means face tracking and eye-detect Sony autofocus can now work with countless manual PL lenses for the first time. Alongside the adapter, Tilta unveiled new cages for recent Sony Alpha cameras including the a7 V.
While LiDAR-based PL adapters have been on the market for a couple of years now, the new wave of camera-body-interfacing PL autofocus adapters represent both a sleeker and more customizable system. Tilta’s Nucleus Autofocus Adapter is notable for its approachable price point and integration with the brand’s full Nucleus follow focus system, namely its existing motors, handwheels, and handgrips. The Autofocus Adapter can be bought on its own or as a larger kit with two Nucleus Nano II FIZ motors and an L-Series Battery Plate.
The Nucleus Autofocus Adapter does require third-party power via a USB-C port, so Tilta includes a 7-Pin LEMO to USB-C cable. The Adapter ships with a built-in lens profile library, though users can also calibrate lenses manually and add them to their lens library (which is also accessible via Nucleus II or Nano II handwheels). Lenses can be fully calibrated without a smartphone app, a nice change from some competing systems.
Switching between manual and autofocus is easy via onboard controls or any of the Nucleus controllers, and both kits come with 15mm rods and an adapter for simple motor mounting. The system is limited to Sony E-mount for now, though other mounts are promised further down the line. Tilta is especially touting compatibility with the FX3, FX30, and FX6, though the brand says the Nucleus should work with any of Sony’s “Alpha and FX line up to the FX6.”
Alongside this adapter, Tilta released new half cages, full cages, and cage kits for the Sony a7 V. The cages also fit the a7 IV and a7R V. Expect your classic mounting points, anti-twist ¼”-20 threads, and an Arca-style baseplate, alongside a new adjustable sliding design. Larger kits include top handles, side handles, 15mm baseplates, HDMI cable clamps, and more. If you’re looking to rig out your camera, a cage is always a smart first step.
